  • Today, I walk you through my collared lizard setup. We talk about enclosure size, heating, lighting, and of course, the lizards themselves. This is a basic collared lizard care guide, but I do not discuss a number of important topics, namely feeding, hydration, brumation, cohabitation, and breeding.
    PRODUCTS USED IN THIS COLLARED LIZARD SETUP:

    For those who are curious...
    I mention in this video that visible light might have a role in the repair UV-induced DNA damage. I didn't go into detail about this because it is something I am still researching. The purported mechanism would depend on enzymes called photolyases (Wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.o... ) which are active in many organisms from bacteria to koalas, but I do not yet know whether they function in reptiles. Expect to hear me talking more about this at some point in the future!

    Im a long time Collared lizard keeper. And resident of the Sonoran Desert Arizona. Your lighting is good. The only problem with your enclosure is your basking area. That slate stone u have will make a better basking spot. Collareds in the wild bask on big rocks/boulders that they can look over their territory. Watching out for prey and intruders. But cool video about my favorite lizards.

    I live in a relatively cold area at seasons and i was wondering if you could do a video dedicated to night heating and controlling that/set ups for that

    • @Dedlyniteshade
      @Dedlyniteshade 2 года назад +1

      It's cold where I live too and my house is always freezing.
      I use ceramic heat emmitters connected to a pulse thermostat for most of mine and works great.
      You can even get day/night thermostats aswell so you can set the ceramic to heat up a bit at night when your basking lights etc are off so the temps are always good:) there a bit more pricey but defo worth it:)

    As always great information presented very well. The Collared Lizards are pretty cool looking! And one of the few (in my opinion) interesting lizards from here in the US. Thanks JTB.

    This is a great enclosure; I could see this setup for bearded dragons, leopard/fat tail geckos, lacertas, uromastyx and even maybe snakes. It's naturalistic meets modern in a way, lol

    Their faces are just adorable. They look quite interested and entertained in their enclosure which is always fun to watch. The little poop cameo increased the quality of this video by ten folds 😂. Can't wait to see Char's new enclosure.

    Hey J, great video. Congrats on getting your new guys home and set up. They have cross looking faces but seem to be pretty happy in there new environment. Look forward to seeing more of them in your content. The colouration of the male is particularly attractive. Did you name them or were those names Roman gave them. Looking forward to seeing Chars new setup. Stay safe and well :0)

    • @JTBReptiles
      @JTBReptiles  3 года назад

      Thanks! They do have rather grumpy expressions but delightful attitudes - it adds to their character, I think!
      I named them - “Caesar” and “Minerva” are names after Roman (geddit?), and Muffin is called “Muffin” because she’s the cute dumpy one of the group haha
      Thanks for watching!

    Wow, new additions, congrats, Joe, what kind of LED would be suitable for them?

    • @JTBReptiles
      @JTBReptiles  3 года назад

      Thanks 🙂 For background illumination I use a linear LED. You can use pretty much anything for this but go for what offers the most lumens per Watt. The Jungle Dawn LED bar is good but expensive; a linear LED by V-tech is also good. For the basking site more intense visible light is required, so a spot LED is what you want. The ones I use are by MILYN, but you can get ones branded for reptiles sold by Reptile Systems and Arcadia. 👍
