Fun fact: She had just finished playing Liszt's B minor sonata. She stood up for the applause, sat back down and started playing this as if the previous piece had been a warm-up 😎
@@awe331 Well, it would be hard to say which is harder. On one hand you need a lot of stamina and crazy Argerich-like power to play the octaves in bumblebee, but on the other hand you need tremendous virtuosity to play the sonata properly. I guess you could say the Sonata is harder because it's a 30 minute-long effort. But bumblebee is definitely no walk in the park. 😅
This is one of those rare pieces that I think no one ever complains about its interpretation being too fast because the faster it is the more it comes closer to imitating the wings of a bumblebee.
Fast is one thing, articulation and clarity of the notes are another. In this, the notes are very clear and distinct, unlike the death of the mosquito violin sacrilegious man
@@paulzeng4142 She plays the game as well as the piano. That's a character thing and a management thing, none of which take anything away from her skills. I'm not saying she's the best ever, I'm saying her playing is very impressive.

Her style is unique to her, but some people criticize the way she plays it because she does not conform to their close-minded understanding of how the Turkish March should be played.
Caleb Hu true. Alkan has some crazy, and I mean CRAZY songs. And liszt’s range of impossible songs is endless. Ravel also has some pretty darn difficult songs
I have watched this song performed on piano, electric guitar, and violin, and every performance sounds humanly impossible to play, yet they play it flawlessly! Hard to believe you can move your fingers that fast, and not miss a note. I wish I had one half of their talent!
It's not "Asian" that makes her an amazing musician. It's called talent and practice. haha And as far as musicality and emotion, it's called "Flight of the Bumblebee" for a reason. Sure she could have played parts differently, but if you expect a romantic love painting full of emotion and expression from this piece, I'm sorry to say, you're in the wrong video. I'm sure at her caliber, she has her own interpretation and emotional input in each piece she plays. I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong (because everyone has his or her opinions) but everyone should just learn to simply enjoy and marvel at great talent.
First of, the Asian thing is a joke. You've either been under a rock your whole life or you are too dumb to comprehend. And I'm pretty sure talent wasn't even that helpful, I'm positive it's her parents that made her become so good.
The reason the Asian joke exists is because Asian parents strive to make their kid better because with the population in Asia, there is a lot more competition to be better
But there is some truth in that Asian joke... as an Asian myself I have witnessed many Asian pianists who are all technique but no skill. However, Yuja Wang breaks that stereotype. Her other videos demonstrate how she excels in both technique and musicality. She is truly incredible!!!
It is now late in the night and I hear music that is if a person from another star comes to the earth and tries to show me the beauty of his planet. It is so absolutely adorable to hear this music.
When Rimsky Korsakov wrote Flight of the Bumble-Bee, it was intended for piano because it's the only instrument with 88 distinct keys. Each key in the composition creates a singular note eerily characteristic of the flap of a bumble bee wing. Yet Yuja Wang manages to take each note of articulation and add richness to it by playing each individual note as an octave group. Not only that, but she does it with both hands which is an extra two octaves on top of the original composition. In masterful execution, she creates the effect of not one pair of wings but multiple multiple bumble bees flapping their wings in unison.
You know that the original version was made for an orchestra, right? It is a part of his "The Tale of Tsar Saltan" opera. The most popular piano version was arranged by Rachmaninoff and the one Yuja Wang plays here was arranged by Cziffra

When I was 14 I learned this piece. I could actually play it correctly. But at about half that speed AND NOT in octaves. There are gifted people like her. The rest of us are just mechanics. Which is OK because we know enoug h to really appreciate the great ones.
Performances like these usually split audience reaction between "Wow, that's humanely impossible! I'm so impressed" to "Wow, that's humanely impossible! It sounds like crap." We as listeners, onlookers, and critics have always given virtuosity the lowest-of-the-low reputation when evaluating performances, and I'm not quite convinced that we've done so for the most aesthetically virtuous reasons. We say things like "mere technique," "noise," "no substance," "boasting," and "only show." I seriously wonder if it's because of a subconscious, voyeuristic jealousy among us who only wish we could play with half the agility that we see here. Regardless of anyone's aesthetic position, the amount of dedication, work, and sacrifice that goes into being able to play like this deserves positive recognition. It does not in the least sound like garbage, as some people have flatly stated. One may not think it fits their conception of "music-making," a term always vulnerable to the vicissitudes of individual taste, and that's fine. It's another thing entirely to dismiss this accomplishment en-masse as garbage and worthless. Sadly, it's more telling of a critic's lack of perspective than of any shortcoming of the performer. Few people can play as fluidly as this, and the craft that Yuja Wang displays here deserves respect, despite whether or not one believes she's not musical.
