    If you change your MPG range settings from "total average" to "tank average," you'll get a more accurate view of your MPG. Just go to settings. Easy. There are three options, Total (which gives you an average over the life of the car), Trip (which gives you an average for just that session), and Tank, which averages your MPG for that tank of gas, automatically resetting when you refil you tank.

    I’ve Been living in a Toyota hybrid for over 2 years now. I traded in my 2021 XLE for a 2023 Platinum and use a no build to be full time. OK if u read this…once u park, open door to get in back LOOK AT YOUR Center DISPLAY…message turn off after an hour or leave on/running not sure scroll down and hit ok to select keep running. BOOM NO ALARMS after that. Second…i use a back scratcher i keep in pocket behind driver seat…i use that to reach and lock / unlock doors…very easy. LASTLY for all with comments about “look up” it’s bad to leave your car idling all night. THIS is a HYBRID- So does NOT run all night….Electric motor keeps everything that u leave on including the Temp….once battery drops to a low lever, its all auto, 4 cylinder Gas engines starts and runs for about 10 minutes and in that time u get a few more hours on Electric…So will do this a few times a night depending on your use. Hybrid Engins…LOOK IT UP! People have been doping van life in the Toyota Prius for YEARS….they leave them running nightly…what idle issues??? HAPPY VANLIFE’ing

      @@windgoblin yes and no, it's not the best thing for your engine but isn't the worst either. We see with old police cruisers they idled for thousands of hours and still got very high mileage. your fuel gauge showed you used slightly less than 1/4 of a tank. if your tank is 18 gallons a quarter tank would be 4.5 gallons. if you used 1.55 gallons it would have barely moved. using the average mpg to back into the gallons used must be inaccurate. anyway even if the cost of this was 2X it’s still great news. i would have kept it at a lower temperature with this kind of heavy duty sleeping bag. thanks for sharing.

    Btw I have a 2022 Sienna, I think in this situation I'd just use enough climate control to keep it above freezing temp and use other means to keep warm, such as zero degree sleeping bag and low wattage heated pad or blanket that can be powered by USB power banks. That way it doesn't stress the car as much and kills less gasoline.

    If you get a 12 volt electric blanket, you can set the cabin temperature say 10 degrees lower and you will save fuel while keeping just as warm. The local heating provided by the blanket is more efficient than heating the entire cabin. The vehicle will maintain the battery state of charge. Gotta love Toyota hybrids.

    I love the toyota hybrids, I have a 2020 Rav4 and during covid it was so nice to be able to hang out in my vehicle on long trips with the heat/AC running without having to continuously idle the motor. It is also nice that the battery charging mode puts some load on the motor when it is running making the engine heat up fast as well as converting what would, in a normal vehicle, be almost no load idle time to light engine load.
    Given the length of time I have had work vehicles idle at job sites without major issue I am confident that while not great for the engine this setup is probably not going to cause any real issues as long as proper maintenance is done.

    You can make this setup much more efficient by using a 12v space heater/heated blanket in addition to the car heater. Currently you have to wait for engine/coolant to heat with each idle period during which it could be generating plenty of juice to be running accessory heaters. Hybrid system will start the engine whether it's too cold or the battery needs charging.

    The Sienna's climate control rocks! I tracked idling gas consumption last night, and Justin's estimate seems plausible. Here’s what I got: I idled for 15 hours (first & last 30 mins at 75°F, the rest ~57°F), with outside temps averaging ~20°F (low of 16°F) and little wind. I used 1.04 gallons, or ~1.66 gal/day, assuming 25 mpg as the average driving mileage (though I usually get >28.5 mpg in this MN winter weather). I set my electric blanket on low and it may have reduced idling since it runs on batteries, which stayed at 100% full. I’ll keep tracking it for a while with different parameters for more accurate estimates and averages.

    Please....Change your oil and filter! I'm not sure, but I think idling your car for hours Could be bad for your engine. At idle, the engines oil pressure is on the low side and could cause a real problem with overhead camshafts, lifters, etc. (If your engine is OHC.) Please start with fresh oil and then change it again after you return home from...say 2 to 3 day's camping. This is what I would do Just some idea's to consider. Take care!

    I suspect that the actual cost is higher. I trust the fuel gauge more than the car’s calculation/guesstimate of mpg. I also don’t think you can extrapolate that it equals gas used to power the heater whilst the car is stationary.
    The fuel gauge says that used a quarter tank of fuel, which in a Sienna is ore than 1.55 gallons.Google says a 2021 Sienna has a gas tank of 18 gallons, so a quarter tank is 4.5 gallons, making the actual cost closer to $13.50; which is still a deal 😊

    How do you turn off the led lights the front one when you have the climate control on all night? In a toyota corolla 2020 hybrid? the hybrid systems are pretty similar in all. When i changed the headlights from auto to off they turn off however leds are kept on? I want to go stealth mode but these lights won't turn off , any one facing same issue?

    A Sienna has an 18 gallon tank. If this only used 1.5 gallons, the gauge should have shown a lot less of a difference. It went from about 80% to about 60%, amounting to about a 3.6 gallon drop.
    I'm wondering if the range estimator takes a few other things into account, or if the gauge exaggerates the gallons in the middle.
    In any case, have fun and explore as much as you can!

    • @JustinTheVan
      @JustinTheVan  Месяц назад +1

      I don't think I have ever added more than 17 gallons to my tank despite being on or below E. So, I think the gauge only accounts for probably 16 gallons with 2 gallons in reserve.

    overall MPG sucks for all hybrids during colder months but a good option for overnight camping since engine only turns on seldomly during the night to circulate the warm air.

    I can sit in my cheap ass used Nissan Leaf with the heat pump running for a couple days before it drains the battery. I imagine if you had a 2024 Chevy Silverado EV with 200 kWh battery, you could sit in that thing for weeks with the heat or A/C running.
    I sleep in it with everything turned off. Otherwise it's too hot. When I wake up I can have it toasty warm in a two minutes.

    Can You imagine, in some EU countries to keep the engine on when parked up, is banned by law, We can be fined. For example in Poland according to the law, during winter, early morning when We have to scratch(clean)the windows from the ice, snow, we aren’t allowed to switch the engine on😂. You have to clean the windows first, turn your engine on later😂. The eco euro terror. All the best mate.

    You definitely burned more than 1.55 gallons running idle overnight (yes, I understand it's a hybrid). Indicated range is just an approximate estimate, and fuel gauge is also approximate. It's not possible to calculate correctly based on this info. The only way to find out for certain is to sleep near a gas station and fill up completely full before and after - second fill up will be the answer.
    It's a bit strange to have 72° or 70° heated car AND a sleeping bag, but to each its own, I guess.
    Thanks for the video 👍

    so... what is your normal MPG when driving at interstate speeds in the western US? A deer just wrecked our 2011. hoping to get a 2025 tomorrow. Excited about the hybrid, but not about the loss of power that the 6 cylinder gave us. We mostly go 21mpg driving 80 with a space case and bicycles.

      @FarhoodEnsan Месяц назад

      Congratulations on the new car and sorry to hear about the accident, hope y'all are fine.
      Siennas should do about 30 mpg going 80 mph on the highway. If you go slower at about 65-70, you easily get north of 35 mpg, closer to 40 in ideal conditions.
      I believe the extreme weather and all the stuff he has mounted to the roof (increasing drag and reducing highway efficiency) caused his mpg to be lower.
