Looking at the other kinds of swifts out there, the "lock" you have at the top belongs below the arms that hold the yarn. Which enables you to raise and lower the whole thing.

Hi Jessica! Thanks for watching my video. On the Amazon listing of the one I purchased, they called them spindle needles. I heard of them being called picks. Some say that these may be darning needles. While others call them nalbinding needles. I have this exact set. I feel like I’ve tried everything and it will not wind into a cake, it’s more like a sloppy donut. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong.
Try to adjust the tension and speed to see if that helps.
