Once embarked on a heavy metal cruise - 40 bands, four days at sea, Carcass playing at 4am on the top deck in the middle of the Caribbean. There was a guy who wore chainmail and a Santa Claus hat the entire time. He brought no luggage at all.
This Exists I go on a music cruise and there are two dudes that show up every other wear with mullets and it's amazing...your story is better, though, haha.
+Paul Keefer you can get the noro virius anywhere. schools, public park, nurshing homes, hospitals, camping sites. Public parks all have been hit in my state
A "nursing home" is typically where one would live if they needed daily nursing care. I can't imagine a person choosing a cruise ship if they needed that kind of care. A cruise ship seems more like an alternative to a retirement residence which is like an apartment complex for old people that may have activities, meals, etc...
I've been ice skating on a cruise, haha. Man, cruises are literally the best. You're doing a lot (anything you can imagine really), eating lots of great food for any type of diet, meeting people, and visiting multiple destinations. That being said, it isn't a very sustainable, Earth-friendly type of vacationing (then again, how many types of vacation really are). It's sheer first world over indulgence, so remember how privileged you are to be apart of it and do some good in the world.
Rumer Priestly I thought it was funny that John (who has been on more cruises than I ever will, with my current cruise count being 0) is talking about wasting resources on a cruise.
I went on a Royal Caribbean cruise, and although a cruise certainly isn't the best way to see the islands, it's definitely a great way to vacation. Most other vacations you still have to work and take care of yourself over the vacation. You're probably driving for long periods of time, checking in, finding places to eat, making your own tour schedule, unless you go to an all inclusive, there's a lot of responsibilities even on vacation. But on a cruise, they do everything for you. All you do is dress yourself and decide what you want to do that day. Oh and the food was amazing. I'd totally do that male escort thing (it's not sexual ok?) One of the less fun things about the cruise is that it can be hard to make friends with other passengers. It's great if you go as a couple or as a family but don't expect to meet your new buddy or soulmate. For some single cruise goers, a host service could be a very fun change for an evening. I'd say one of the best things about the cruise I went on was the staff. They were all very interesting and willing to talk, and very friendly. It also felt like the cruise line made an effort to get staff from all over the world so you had a great variety of the kinds of people you could meet. But of course, they are working so you can't take them away from their job for too long. Working on a cruise seems like a great job for a single person wanting to travel. Just don't get any expectations of dating anyone.
The minigolf of the Serenade of the Sea isn't very big, it's 9 holes in the middle of the jogging track. I played there with my family at dawn before arriving at Split, Croatia.
TheVlog Going on cruises is pretty expensive but so is going on vacations of any kind (except for maybe backpacking, which I've always wanted to do but it's hard to do when you have little ones) Travel and hotel and eating out every day will add up to a lot of money. There are a couple of tricks to save money on cruises, though, so you can do it for a lot less money. When cruise companies cannot sell all of their rooms on their own they use 3rd party websites to sell them, so a good place to buy discount last minte cruises for example is vacations to go. Another trick is to use private tours instead of the ones offered by the cruise line, since the cruise line gets a huge cut, for example we had an amazing experience by booking tours with Joe Banana. Anyway I hope it helps :)
MobiusCoin I actually think this is what he means because I'm pretty sure you still have to pay a ton for it but you can connect your phone...though there are some ships that have ship-specific apps that do very limited things for free, iirc.
I can assure that the temperature of a bar on a Norwegian cruise does not exceed any degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature in Celsius however, now that's a different matter.
theIcyToad So if I brought a digital thermometer into that bar, that was set to show fahrenheit, it wouldn't work? :) "Error! This bar is on a norwegian ship, disembark or change setting to celsius!"
***** no I was being hyperbolic. It comes from a place of wanting to understand the information that is presented before me. Particularly Scandinavia-related information. I do regret my decision to be hyperbolic, because there are definitely more constructive ways for me to communicate my frustration. I suppose that hyperbole refers more closely to the wording and not the underlying sentiment, but I don't know what else to call it. Your respect is appreciated even if I have come to regret my smartassery.
John must not be talking about Carnival when it comes to the drinks- pricey, yes, but STRONG. Think they just wanted to keep us drunk so we'd buy more.
Brittany Pines I remember ordering a long island, there was still space in my drink so the bartender just fill it up with more alcohol...(instead of juice like in land bar). My girlfriend gave me some of her drink because they were to strong for her
Awkwarderthanu Me too. It's sad we spend so much money on resources on a few weeks of fun, when it could had been spend on something much more worthwhile. I'm not against fun, but there really should be line for how much it should be worth.
TheVlog Oh come on now, stop being so self-righteous and let the old rich people have some fun, not because they deserve it but because the workers who take care of them need the jobs so they can feed their families.
January Sidra Ahhh, sarcasm? I really can't tell so sorry if it's not sarcasm. I just think there's a better way to structure society, but of course, here's where I could go on a long rant that probably wont do much good...
I actually had to go to a hospital on a cruse ship when I had a dental abscess. They didn't have a lot of equipment, but they had a fully stocked pharmacy which is all I really needed.
They have allowed animals on cruise ships for a lot longer then that. My Grandparents brought their Dog onto a Cunard ship travelling from London to New York over 30 years ago! The dog stayed in special kennels near the top of the ship.
John Manzari...Clever. Anyway, a passenger must look out the port hole to see if he/she is on the cruise. There will be H20. Is there a starboard hole, too?
you'd think this is all weird excessive stuff, but if you think about it being on a cruise ship is like being trapped inside a shopping mall. After a couple of days, anything gets old, even the wind tunnel. I'd even welcome a "Dawn of the Dead" type situation just for the hell of it. Also you just know the crew's secret stash is in one of those morgue refrigerators.
How can 60 people like this? Cruises aren’t for rich people-they cater mainly to middle class and some budget lines like Carnival are lower middle class. Cruises aren’t really that expensive esp for interior cabins. Rather than stating they are for the rich I would think its more that they aren’t within easy reach of the poverty class.
1) Oasis of the Seas also has a carousel (I know cause I've been on it) and that whole area of the ship has a sort of carnival theme. It's actually really cool. 2) At least on all the ships I've been on (Royal Caribbean ones mostly), they call the AA meetings "Friends of Dorothy", not "Friends of Bill W."
samramdebest It literally takes five seconds to go to google and convert it.. Or learn conversions, but I can understand why you would argue against that.
As someone who had to email our ship-board branch library's librarian today I'm getting a kick out of this (of course, the ship containing our ship-board branch isn't nearly as nice as an actual cruise ship....)
number 24...yeah I noticed...I was on a trip near Greece with the Norwegian cruiseline... I will tell you this much...once you go on a cruise you are spoiled for life and don't want anything else... NON stop food and I got a soda package so yeah....good times
So I just finished paper towns which was ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ (good job John!). Although I would have to say WHY THE ENDING WHYYYYY!!!!! I can't afford to think what I want to think as an ending (though quite brilliant) MY MIND IS EXPLODING WITH POSSIBILITIES!!!!!
What is the source for saying that the MSC Divina has underwater bikes? I spent two weeks on that ship and there was no such thing. Maybe also if they were recently placed, I went during the Brazil soccer World Cup.
I went on a couple cruises when I was a kid and the library was fucking great. They didn’t actually have a librarian but also no one goes to the library on a cruise ship so it was just this nice quiet room full of books! I was the only person I ever saw there
Oh yeah i went on the norwegian breakaway cruise and on that rope course too. I also happened to go on the plank because a sixty-something year old gentleman pressured me into it. it was maybe the scariest thing i have ever done in my life. I was standing on this skinny ass plank and the wind was blowing and i stared down into the ocean. It was pretty magnificant but i was so scared that I'd die that I didn't appreciate it as much as I should have while I was standing on the tip. Either way, it's an interesting memory.
Emperor Caligula's cruise ship covered an entire lake, and contained no senators aside from the horse he appointed to the senate. He had issues with the senate to say the least...
Skip6235 I have a friend who worked as a dance host on several cruises. First of all, you need to be a competent ballroom dancer (fox trot, waltz, rumba, tango, etc.). Second, he wasn't paid by the cruise line, he just got a discounted cabin and meals and it wasn't the nicest cabin, either. Third, remember the average age of the ladies is about 63 years old. Fourth, he had to be scrupulously appropriate in his conduct. The least little complaint could have gotten him kicked off the ship where ever it happened to be, so no hanky panky of any kind, not even by mutual consent. Finally, a lot of the ladies weren't single, their husband just didn't like to dance. Still, he enjoyed it and got to go to a lot of places that he couldn't have afforded on his own.
Skip6235 Thank you. My friend, Jim, who was a dance host, really enjoyed it. I thought it would be a fun thing to do with my husband since, though we are not dance instructors, we can both teach the basic and can do dance demonstrations. I think we'd be a good team. Sadly, ships don't seem to hire lady instructors or hostesses and the male hosts do have to be single.
I've only heard of them existing at amusement parks, and I don't think they're very common. Are they a regular thing where you live? I went to one at an amusement park and it was extremely cheesy.
mickycarcar only for some releases (I live in mexico btw) and it can be quite cheesy. however when done well it can be awesome. My best experiences with it were the original avengers where the seats moved forwards backwards and to the sides times perfectly with the movement if the camera flying across NY. And paranormal activity 4 (i know.. i know) where the chairs threw you down for a jumpscare.
Not only msc has simulators and cinema 4d. On costa cruise lines has those in all of those. Did you know that on cruise ships ther are at least twice a month party's for the Crew in which guests are invited to leave by security because it's a crew only. I worked on Costa and once a grup of German passengers entered in the party and hated the conditions so much that they complained at the front desk, that's how companies treat their employees... Now I am going to work on board msc.
My current soul re-entered in the high desert. This is probably where I'm going to stay. That deep water and fish bigger than me crap is not something I desire anymore. I went down with the Titanic in a past life as far as I can tell.
Peculiar question: what is the meaning of all those color dots and other such symbols on packaging? Is it the inks used on the bag, box, etc or something else? And if it is the colors used, then why do they put in on there and not just remove it after wards?
BioniclesaurKing4t2 It's for quality testing. A sensor goes over those dots, detects the color of the dots, and if it's wrong (usually because the painter is out of ink) it can automatically reject the batch. They don't remove it because why would they? It costs them money to remove it, and nothing to leave it, so why remove it?
Alien 3:16 says I want enough money to just live on a cruise ship for the rest of my life. (If you don't get the 3:16 reference, look at the video title, then look up Stone Cold Steve Austin)
I've never understood cruise ships.Would anyone want to be stuck inside of a hotel for several weeks? To me, boats are things you use to get from one place to another, I would never spend an entire holiday on one. I love being on a boat and all, but it would just be too much for me being stuck in one place with a lot of people I don't know.
LiquoriceLover You may be underestimating the sheer size of these things. They have way more amenities and things to do and places to explore than any hotel I've ever been in.
Cruises: The vacation that costs more per person when you have less people! No seriously, I looked up a cruise once out of morbid curiosity and it jumped from about $550 or so per person for two to over $800 for one. I can understand the logic, they don't get as much money from just one person in optional costs (like skimpy, watered down cocktails) and the cost of the entertainment, food, etc. is likely the same but still.

I did Motörhead's motorboat last year, it was a blast!
Today we learned of Johns majorly big fear of Norovirus.
Actual title: 24 *Norovirus* Unexpected Things (*Norovirus*) Aboard *Norovirus* Cruise Ships - *Norovirus*-floss on NoroTube - _Virus Show_ ...*Norovirus*
Paul Keefer thank you for this glorious comment
+Paul Keefer you can get the noro virius anywhere. schools, public park, nurshing homes, hospitals, camping sites. Public parks all have been hit in my state
+Paul Keefer Pretty sure this is the only time where he has ever mentioned a disease more than alcohol when the topic offered both.
Ah our innocent youth
My aqua-cycling experience happened when the bridge was really a dock.
***** Thanks for the chuckle.
Literally started looking up cruise prices right after I finished this video. It's good to be an adult.
One of your best episodes yet. Thank you John Green.
"You might be dead, but GRANDMA IS STILL GOING TO VENICE!"
Tee hee!
Unexpected thing in cruise ships: Iceberg
Media Luna I have ice cubes in the shape of the Titanic and icebergs.
Media Luna No we assed the 100 year mark
Deamon Cohln And people yelling "I'm king of the world!"
I went to the bottom with the titanic in a past life.. As far as i can tell.
I have a new dream. I will be a cruise ship librarian.
Did you ever become a cruise ship librarian?

The framed butterfly (in the back, over John's left shoulder) is falling over! 0:36
"...plus there's a morgue!" I couldn't contain myself.
Love this show! John Green is so funny, what a great host!
Festivus for the the rest of us
My now husband and I got engaged on Allure of the Seas 😊
That zip line is crazy btw...not for the faint of heart (like me).
I'm going on a cruise next week. Perfect timing.
This guy is so much fun to watch
As much as the hedonism and ruthless waste of our Earth's resources is upsetting, this video made me really want to go on a cruise.
Rumer Priestly I thought it was funny that John (who has been on more cruises than I ever will, with my current cruise count being 0) is talking about wasting resources on a cruise.
Feminist alert

Marc Latorre Define: Affluence
TheVlog Going on cruises is pretty expensive but so is going on vacations of any kind (except for maybe backpacking, which I've always wanted to do but it's hard to do when you have little ones) Travel and hotel and eating out every day will add up to a lot of money. Marc Latorre my expensive vacation are paying for netflix and then bige washing and then stop paying
Oh so they finally have WiFi on cruise ships. About time. Went on one a couple of years ago and it was like 5 bucks for 45 minutes of Internet usage.
MobiusCoin I actually think this is what he means because I'm pretty sure you still have to pay a ton for it but you can connect your phone...though there are some ships that have ship-specific apps that do very limited things for free, iirc.
Michele Dee In the world of 2015, internet access should be a basic human right.
***** It actually is, kinda. You have the right to access newest technology (at least in EU. "Basic human rights" change from country to country).
***** I mean, yeah. I agree.
MobiusCoin Most WiFi on cruise ships are very slow (0.3 mbps if you're lucky) and cost a ridiculous amount of money considering the speed.
#19. Ouran Host Club, though.
I took a cruise in Alaska and found the book Looking For Alaska in the Alaska travel section of the cruise ship library.
:) "Error! This bar is on a norwegian ship, disembark or change setting to celsius!"
why would you bring a digital thermometer on a cruise? For the sake of semantics? Because your semantics are wasted on my hyperbole!
***** no I was being hyperbolic. It comes from a place of wanting to understand the information that is presented before me. Particularly Scandinavia-related information. I do regret my decision to be hyperbolic, because there are definitely more constructive ways for me to communicate my frustration.
As for my decision to both question the premise of someone else's semantics, while dismissing it as semantics, I suppose you may regard that as hypocrisy on my part
theIcyToad Hyperbole is exaggeration. There was no hyperbole here. Just smartassery. Which I respect, mind you.
James Lewandowski I do hold it to be an exaggerated viewpoint, that the choice of a nation to use one unit of measurement causes other units to be unobservable within their domain. If nothing else I exaggerated my closed-mindedness so as not to make it look like semantics and/or smartassery/douchiness (at which I seem to have failed). I suppose that hyperbole refers more closely to the wording and not the underlying sentiment, but I don't know what else to call it. Your respect is appreciated even if I have come to regret my smartassery.

I'm grossed out at the over-consumption that happens on cruise ships.
Awkwarderthanu Me too.
It's sad we spend so much money on resources on a few weeks of fun, when it could had been spend on something much more worthwhile.
I'm not against fun, but there really should be line for how much it should be worth.
Awkwarderthanu Trickle-down economics at work.
Awkwarderthanu I don't think I could have fun a cruise, knowing the level of consumption
I'm on the Allure of the seas now! It's so cool!
16 grabbed my attention rather quickly. Massive F1 fan + rare chance to use a sim=bliss
The dog stayed in special kennels near the top of the ship.
hot dogs are made from pigs U FORGOT STAFF PORKCHOP PARTY FUND
Except for the all beef ones. Sorry, pork chop party fund.
"you may be dead, but Grandma is still going to Venice!" Hahahah I love John Green
John I've missed you!!
Lmao. John is legit so tickled to joke about death. 🤣🤣🤣
Seriously, though....so much norovirus.
John Manzari...Clever. Anyway, a passenger must look out the port hole to see if he/she is on the cruise. There will be H20. Is there a starboard hole, too?
Getting some fishing proceeds john?
That ropes corse on the break away was awsome it wasn't that big but scary and awsome
you'd think this is all weird excessive stuff, but if you think about it being on a cruise ship is like being trapped inside a shopping mall. Never been on a cruise ship but they look cool.
I can tell this wasn't sponsored by Carnival Cruiselines, because you mentioned norovirus 5 times. Good job!
This makes cruise ships sound like horrendous wastes of money and resources.
The oasis of the seas also has a merry-go-round
OMG I saw The World cruise ship last week like 3 times in Croatia!! Haha nice timing
I want to live on a cruise ship. Would be sweet for my rheumatism during the winter.
1:40 please use metric
samramdebest It literally takes five seconds to go to google and convert it.. Or learn conversions, but I can understand why you would argue against that.
Flamingdk So why not use metric?
joimumu Because he's American and it was probably easier for him to come up with Fahrenheit temperature as he was talking than Celsius.
Yes, Please. The other 95% of the planet uses Celsius. [btw: 17F ~ -8C]
samramdebest Long Live the Imperial system!!
What I like on cruise ship is to run on the treadmill, the ocean make it more difficult
You should have added semester at sea. Taking classes on a cruise ship and getting credit for it is pretty unexpected.
Given what's happen to some cruise ships fairly recently, you could probably add "functional plumbing" to this list.
Crew ships may have Wi-Fi but it still sticks the motif of travel vehicles to charge crazy amounts of money to use the service.
I’d love to go on a fancy cross Antlantic cruise… like the Titanic except without the iceberg.
As someone who had to email our ship-board branch library's librarian today I'm getting a kick out of this (of course, the ship containing our ship-board branch isn't nearly as nice as an actual cruise ship....)
If I wasn't deathly afraid of the ocean I would love to retire on a cruise ship that sounds awesome
My first cruise was a trip from San Francisco to Alaska, it was the cruise from hell - six people died on the ten day trip.
Fact 26. Cruse lines pay and/or offer Mental Floss staff free cruises in exchange for product placement.
I was NEVER board on Allure you're right :)
number 24...yeah I noticed...I was on a trip near Greece with the Norwegian cruiseline... I will tell you this much...once you go on a cruise you are spoiled for life and don't want anything else... NON stop food and I got a soda package so yeah....good times
I've always wanted to go on a cruise :-)
So I just finished paper towns which was ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ (good job John!). Although I would have to say WHY THE ENDING WHYYYYY!!!!! I can't afford to think what I want to think as an ending (though quite brilliant) MY MIND IS EXPLODING WITH POSSIBILITIES!!!!!
Have you experienced any of these activites Jon
What is the source for saying that the MSC Divina has underwater bikes?
I spent two weeks on that ship and there was no such thing. Maybe also if they were recently placed, I went during the Brazil soccer World Cup.
I missed three entire facts from laughing when you said "speaking of things that make me shudder." :)
We were all thinking it before you said it!
There was clay pigeon shooting too!
My uncle took a cruise on The World with his wife for a few weeks. One of his neighbors owns a room on the ship and let him use it.
I went on a couple cruises when I was a kid and the library was fucking great. They didn’t actually have a librarian but also no one goes to the library on a cruise ship so it was just this nice quiet room full of books! I was the only person I ever saw there

looking for one that rewards the best jumping overboard.
I wonder if the Festivus ship has the Feats of Strength...
Wow, that got dark at the end. Just like life.
The zip line at 80 feet length, that drops some 9 decks might be a little quick for beginners. It seems too vertical for more than a two second ride.
LMFAO @ "plus there's a morgue"
"...but grandma is still going to venice" hahahaha
i love your shows (:
4:00-- so, Ouran Host Club IRL?
I knew about the jail thing from Girl Code.
Emperor Caligula's cruise ship covered an entire lake, and contained no senators aside from the horse he appointed to the senate. He had issues with the senate to say the least...
These ships make the ship I took to Alaska look like a chump.
Cool! ...still won't ever take a cruise.
On Semester at Sea the "brig" was our drunk tank...
Wait, there are single guys who get paid to go on cruises and go on dates with single women? Where do I sign up?
Skip6235 I have a friend who worked as a dance host on several cruises. First of all, you need to be a competent ballroom dancer (fox trot, waltz, rumba, tango, etc.). Tessa T *sigh* it's always too good to be true
Tessa T Also, excellent use of "hanky panky" +1 internets :)

Skip6235 in japan they have real host clubs and the males make a killing but the catch is you have to be really good looking
they way he says #17... are 4D cinemas not a thing in the US?
I've only heard of them existing at amusement parks, and I don't think they're very common. Are they a regular thing where you live? I went to one at an amusement park and it was extremely cheesy.
David Hernández They are, I have one near me. But I assume they're only in major cities, if at all.
David Hernández I haven't seen many here, only in places like Disney land
David Hernández Not where I live, but I have been to them in the big cities.
mickycarcar only for some releases (I live in mexico btw) and it can be quite cheesy. however when done well it can be awesome.
I was just on a cruise!
My current soul re-entered in the high desert. This is probably where I'm going to stay. That deep water and fish bigger than me crap is not something I desire anymore. I went down with the Titanic in a past life as far as I can tell.
D-Did hurricane Katrina indirectly influence the inception of 'Suite Life on Deck?'
Does Norwegian allow for the airing of grievances during their Festivus celebrations?
Peculiar question: what is the meaning of all those color dots and other such symbols on packaging? Is it the inks used on the bag, box, etc or something else? And if it is the colors used, then why do they put in on there and not just remove it after wards?
sion8 Yes, the dots/squares indicate all the different colors of ink used on the box/etc. As for why...you got me there.
Also a fascinating fact: the Queen Mary II pollutes as much as 50,000 cars.
starlinguk Wouldn't be surprised if that was true.
Gentlemen host program….excessive extravagance…exotic locations…THIS IS THE WORK OF THE OURAN HIGH SCHOOL HOST CLUB!
I found this so almost David-Foster-Wallace-esque.
Aboard certain cruise ships if a passenger dies they put out all flavors of ice cream and all flowers because they need room in the freezer
Why is the color Red used to describe spicy food?
Cruises: The vacation that costs more per person when you have less people!
No seriously, I looked up a cruise once out of morbid curiosity and it jumped from about $550 or so per person for two to over $800 for one. I can understand the logic, they don't get as much money from just one person in optional costs (like skimpy, watered down cocktails) and the cost of the entertainment, food, etc. is likely the same but still.
