Raymond J. Johnson Jr. You don't know that, if the south mobilized and moved against Washington DC after starting the war by firing on our forts in the south, they may very well support it. It really just depends on the context, they wouldn't support it the way you present it, however that is not how the Civil War happened and you know this.

ReiAyanami8 Actually a state is a nonliving entity that cannot think or believe anything. Idiots that live within those states can believe anything they want. You also need to remember that a portion of those states you allude to werenot even seen as human. In fact the Constitution only recognized them as 3/5's of a person. So, it wasn't the states that believed this, it was a portion of the white population.

Lincoln was one of the most authoritative president in the U.S. history. Unlike his predecessor, he had no issue in using the U.S. military against the sectionalist southern states(although he did promised the North wont fire the first shot). When the war finally broke out, he revoked habeas corpus and imposed martial laws in the few border slaves states that remained in the Union. This led to the imprisonments of many suspected (but sometimes unsubstantiated) southern sympathizers and dissidents without trial. He even personally issue the arrest order of key border state legislators in order to prevent the state government from defecting to the Confederacy. As commander in chief of the Army, he wasn't merely a civilian heading a military, he actually COMMANDED the armies like a general. He was known to send direct military orders to the field commanders through telegraphs and discussed strategies with his generals.

Another fun fact: Both people who attacked John Wilkes Booth on the day of Lincoln's assassination ended up going insane. In addition to Major Rathbone, Boston Corbett, the soldier who ended up shooting Booth through the slats of the burning farmhouse in Virginia, was also later institutionalized. Corbett was a milliner, or hat-maker, by trade; mercury poisoning was a common risk of the profession in those days, and that likely led to his insanity. The more you know!

Re: #7 - Lincoln didn't truly run against Douglas because at the time US Senators were selected by the state's congress. However, nearly everyone voted the party line, usually by receiving a pre-printed party ticket. So the Lincoln vs Douglas debates were actually trying to persuade voters to vote Republican vs Democrat; whichever side won a majority in the Illinois congress would then presumably vote to send their candidate to the US Senate, although I don't think there was technically anything stopping them from picking someone else (it would have been bad for party loyalty in future elections though).
So in other words as bad as partisan politics and voting the party line are in the 21st century they were probably worse in the mid-19th century. Although at least there was no 24/7 cable news back then (although there were partisan newspapers).

No descendants, but plenty of living relatives. My brother once worked out that we're 8th cousins.

This video reminded me of a play my class did way back in 4th grade. It was about when Lincoln was assassinated (kind of morbid for kids I guess).. My friend was playing Abraham Lincoln and when the person playing Booth "shot her" she slipped off of her chair and hit the floor. She was quite... uh, large.. so it was loud.

Danny Gamez lol, well it wasn't a thing with an audience. It was just during class. But still. Not a very good play to do. Fairy tales are much better.

What do you mean with "the slaves took the Lincoln name to hommage Lincoln"?
As far as I know, slaves were gave their master's name. Are you implying they could have chosen their own names?
