I would’ve used a stronger and bigger drone like a hexacopter and gone about the hook the same way you did.
I don't know... maybe use a strong magnet?

Don't think I could resist the urge to try to save it either. But watching this I can't help but think what amazing job the owner did of landing it on that tiny cliff.....only to have someone hook into the water. Maybe the owner should placed a sign or lookout, "Coming back, don't try to save my drone".

Great video! It's impossible to lift more than 200g with the Air 2s. I would have taken a line longer than the top of the cliff and landed there to lift the drone by hand.
Had to save mine just like that.😅
ive had my air 2s carry 500g of fishing weights and drop them succesfully.
im pretty sure air2s can carry max 800g or something like that

Great flying in and around the ice Possibly a bigger drone with a net.
With the equipment you had on location I wouldn't have it done different. But if I would have time to prepare a real recovery drone I would provide a detaching mechanism on the reccovery drone so that in the worst case you would lose only the rope and the hook.
You needed a better drone. I saved my Mini with a Mavic Pro.

Great flying! You're lucky Ralf's drone fell off. I tried rescuing a drone with my Air2S and used fishing line and the same type of shirt hanger as a hook. Once I hooked the lost drone, I realized that the Air2S did not have enough power to lift the hooked lost drone in the air. Fortunately I managed to shake the hook loose and save my Air2S. You'll need a bigger drone.
i would have googled the lifting capabilities of my own drone BEFORE i go out to rescue TBH
I used my Phantom 4 Pro V2 to fish a friend's Mavic Air that auto landed on the roof of a school sports hall with a line and hanger. It took many attempts to hook on, and that's with me being able to have the hanger lying on the roof and dragging it towards the Mavic. In the end it precariously hung on a tiny catch on the Mavic, think end of hangar with a
1- Using Mavic 3 or above, attached a 10-15 mm rope or thick wiring with fine net, so it could hook 🪝 in the drone arms and get all around hooked, but never lace shoes, specially on that type of gusts 💨 of winds, that would be easier!
Or just using the rope with the net as drooping down from the edge but no drone, only a drone to fly as same time just to give some view of the operation, but at the list you tried!

That was GREAT ! You did an excellent job .. lots of fun to watch , I’m in Orlando FL and it’s daily heat of 100+ degrees, so seeing that amazing, beautiful footage in Iceland is very welcomed … What if there was a way to extend a long rope so instead of the drone trying to pull other drone. You fly a long rope that’s connected to the drone to a person ontop ? Use drone to get stuck drone free, but person on top has other end? Hard to explain my idea

Hey buddy, I had to rescue my new Mavic3 in a similar situation, from the top of a warehouse. It was at night so it also needed to carry a light. Turns out the best drone for the job was my old MavicPro now named "the hercules". I will have to upload the footage as it was one hell of a buzz hooking it on especially with the old mavic not so stable in the winds. Love your work.
Kudos for trying though! Most would take a photo or a video and say "Hey look what I found!"

when you where in Iceland, did you also fly over Snæfellsjökull?
Ivisited the vulkano when i was in Iceland first time. My verry first ride on F-roads and i manged to drive up to the edge of the glacer with my car. Clear sky and fantastiv view to the sumit.
Next year i owened a AIr2-S but the mountain was always coverd with clouds.
Next year i returned in spring, clear sky, but the road was blocked with snow half way to the sumit on both sides. Impossible ro reach the sumit.
I returned in autumn. With my Ari2-S and my new Mavic 3. Clear sky but so stormy that it was impossible to fly the first day. I manged to launch the Mavic 3 but was not able to land it.
I had to cach it fron the air, otherwhise it would have been blowen into the cliffs.
Next Day at sunset the whole Sumit was covered with mist and clouds. So i drove as high i could with my car into the fog. Ate the end i could see hardly 2m or so. Than strated and tryed to get over the cloudes.
I made a few hunderd of pics of Snæfellsjökull in sunset and mist. Looked a little bit like mordor.
When flying on Snæfellsjökull it is realy difficult to catch the right weather.

I was there and could see the drone on the edge. Impossible to walk down to recover it, far too dangerous. I was wondering how to rescue it. I thought it was one DJI Mini, but it does not seem so. Thanks for your video and your try. What an amazing place to go by the way.

I would have tried to hook the drone with a fishing line that I could release and use a fishing rod that I could extend over the cliff edge and reel it in. You were lucky, you could have snagged your line or be stuck to the other drone with no way to go until the batteries run out. But awesome video and great flying nontheless.

You should learn how to make a knot when you pulled up the knot will tighten.... well it's not easy but doable.... hope you can safe another drone :D

Your FPV drone was the way to go. Lower the camera angle and attach the hook the the frame directly, without rope.

Ralph went home go get some rope to climb down the basalt rock columns to retrieve his drone.
To his astonishment when he got back he found someone had knocked his drone into the river in a hopeless, failed rescue attempt 10 minutes earlier⚠️😲😁😊
Valiant attempt BUT next time check you have a drone with suitable lifting capacity, or even better do a test lift with a similar weight? 🤔😲⚠️😁
I personally would have rigged up your coat hangar and hook arrangement on a longer rope or strong string, used your other drone as a visual aid to hook it and manually dropped the rope and hook rig down from above.
When you confirmed a positive visual hook via the other drone cam view, just pull it up?

Yes, you should do it. You have great drone skills I'm sure you would get amazing results. A lot of drones are falling down because of the heat. I'm a filmmaker and I melted the plastics on my drone but I got great footage.

I think I would have just tried to make a slip knot out of the laces and just lassoed the drone propellor. A knot that would have tightened up around the propellor as you pulled up and away on it. And I would have been more comfortable using a Phantom than another Mavic.
