Robin has an almost operatic voice. I'm betting that if he had gone to school for it he would have rivaled the current male opera singers. Ellan Vannin is much more haunting than any other national anthem I am familiar with. Perhaps it is because of the wreck of a ship named ELLAN VANNIN.
I saw an interview clip of Robin. (Paraphrased) Question: As a young man, where did your confidence come from? His answer and humility still blows my mind. The sweetest songbird the world will ever know said, " I thought I could control my voice as well as anyone I heard on the radio."

I think South Africa must have realised after Robin's rendition of Ellan Vannin who the truly talented singer was (they were all talented in their own right) but he, in the 1960's catapulted them to fame. It was a very competitive time for bands/ groups but for his voice ( when he was the voice of the Bee Gees) they would just have been another band/ group.
Ellan Vannin is not the official anthem. ‘Oh land of our birth’ is, but every Manx child learns both songs. Pity the BeeGees changed some of the words from the original. I used to live down the road from the brothers but did not know them.
