Studios tend to prefer more generic names I guess because 8 For Silver would have put off a lot of people. The Cursed is meant to sound more “traditionally scary” I guess. 🤷 Oh well. I’ll hit it up on PVOD. It looks interesting and I like a good werewolf story.

Saw this opening night. Just the right combo of body horror, creepy dream sequences, a few jump scares, and a Robert Eggers-type slow burn vibe. Given the rather good cinematography in the indie comedy Cashback, I’m not surprised it would be this good for a period horror film. HIGHLY recommend this one.

I saw it in a theater yesterday. It's a bit slow, but everything else was on point. I liked it. And the very nature of the werewolves themself being different than the norm made it interesting too. I'm a huge werewolf fan, and at first I sorta rejected this new fangled werewolf. But the movie was good and I wound up appreciating the difference fact rather than being disappointed by it. And there were some super cool monster moments that were super cool BECAUSE they were different than what we normally get.

*spoilers* Just saw this. The wide scene shots were so beautiful, the mercenary scene was a lot to take in at the moment with so much chaos on screen. The gore was so great I couldn’t believe how much blood was being thrown across and how real it looked coming out, props to the effects team. I do agree the whole flash back did nothing for me after learning who the soldier was, there wasn’t much to a BIG reveal. The story of The Cursed (not the ending), a different take on ware wolfs, BEAUTIFUL wide scene shots, and how well the actors did saved the movie for me. 8/10

Yes a lot of dream sequences but some of the best dream sequences I've really ever seen. The shots were beautiful, the scarecrow was just haunting truly terrifying. When the first victim is attacked by the monster she describes it as a Dragon, which people blame on delusion. Then when you see it you very much go, oh, I see what she meant. I'd almost go to say it is similar to a WereWolf movie but more of something completely knew. It reminded me a bit of M. Nights the Village, but of course far more terrifying.

Just watched this. There definitely are some stylistic choices to storytelling and post-production I would've changed but I greatly appreciated the cinematography and the acting. You could see that the film used its money where it counts. Production design was so on point. Worth seeing in theaters to appreciate and give reason to funding films like this. Also, Chris, please review Saint Maude. I'll keep leaving this here.

I really liked it's cinematography, setting, atmosphere, and production. The first part (excluding the WWI scene) was really good and brutal, setting the tone pretty well. Unfortunately I felt that the characters were extremely hollow, we hardly knew anything about them, which lead me to not care about their situation. I'm not sure if it's just the script's fault or what, the acting was fine but all the characters were just kind of cast to the side. Plus the whole WWI opening was extremely unnecessary, it actually made my friend and I think we were in the wrong movie because we saw Death on the Nile about a week before hand and it is eerily similar in how they start.

The unrated cut of Wes Craven’s Cursed is one of the instances where it actually makes a difference and it’s not a bad film. I’ve always really liked it for it’s campiness and insanity. It’s almost like I’d Scream were a CW show about werewolves.

See I really liked the opening but once it got to *spoiler* the scarecrow and the digging up of teeth it started to go downhill for me. And I agree the reveal at the end did nothing for me. Definitely worth watching because like you said it feels like a miracle that this movie exists let alone in theaters.

I have seen the trailers for this, and it definitely is on my radar. However, I think one mistake the studios probably made is put its release date the same weekend as Uncharted. Because of this blockbuster movie, you can anticipate that The Cursed would probably not perform as well

Not gonna lie, for the first 20 minutes of the film I thought they were in England. It wasn't until they started referencing French towns that I realized they were in France. Maybe if they used French accents I would have picked up on it quicker.

Saw this last night and I straight up don't understand the point of including that part in the beginning with the guy having the silver bullet pulled out and then cutting back to him at the end. Is the point that he's supposed to turn into a demon again? Because they didn't hint at that on screen at all. I dont get it.

Chris, if you haven't already, you should check out Equilibrium starring Christian Bale. I'd love to see a review of that from your perspective. There's a certain religious motif to it that loosely resonates with the watchtower society - the act of feeling is a capital offense punishable by incineration/annihilation, everyone has to medicate, the protagonist "wakes up" and joins the resistance movement (apostates), there's mention of a council (governing body). Hell, the antagonist is even referred to as the Tetragrammaton.

I love atmospheric horror films like this and the witch.
The tension in the buildup does more for me than the monsters themselves, at least with todays horror films.
As soon as they show the monster, I'm instantly taken out of the experience because I recognize CGI at a glance.
This is why films like the original The Thing were better in my opinion. The crazy things they could do with props and puppets just felt more real to me. They never instantly disconnected me from the horror experience at any rate.
    *spoiler alert *
This is also why I absolutely loved a particular scene in about the middle of the cursed involving the infected girl still "alive" in the bowels of the beast. Incredibly well done and chilling scene.

  • @crona1794

I enjoyed it a lot, I loved the atmosphere, loved the cinematography. The biggest thing I’d change is the decision to detail what happened to the gypsies early into the film, I would’ve had that take place towards the end of the second act. The film would’ve been a bit more gripping if it had this mystery element, I would’ve rather not known why all of these terrible things were happening until later on.

    • @brianng8350
      @brianng8350 2 года назад

The one thing that I was most confused about with this movie was the fact that when he killed/captured the beast that had the girl in it from the field scene, he specifically said to shoot her because “they’re never the same as before” so how did the son come back and live normally after? I assumed it was because he had the silver bullet in him in a non lethal place that it was keeping the curse at bay, but it wasn’t really explained. To which I would’ve added the end of the movie should’ve been them pulling the bullet out, him dying and then waking back up turning into a beast again. Now THAT would’ve been one hell of an ending

They originally called the movie Eight For Silver and changed it to The Curse because they thought more people would see it. Plus their not making many period pieces anymore. Between the faux activism, arrogance and general ignorance Hollywood has totally lost touch with their audience. If your so stupid you won't see a movie if it has a dumb overused title like The Curse, stay home and don't pay for movies. Your runing things for real film fans!I I used to love everything about the movies and the traditional mystique of the commercial studios. But now after hearing what the The Daily Wire wants to do to compete and seeing some of the results of their efforts I hope this new alternative more conservative film and television production system is a huge success. I think it will be.

I don't know how it was being promoted but the sheer number of reviewers saying "too darkly lit" "too period" "too slow" makes me think this was promoted to young people with short attention spans and not presented as the borderline art house that it is.

Plus, Mary Kelly is always good and Boyd Holbrooks English accent was excellent.
