I done the bar crossing course with Bill .C back in 2004. recommended doing it the one thing stuck with was the northern channel has pressure waves they have no face on them So don’t go down them just have to juggle through it If go down them lose control of your boat
The last time I went through the north channel was about 3 years or so ago. It wasn't very plesent then but I have been told the channel has gotten a bit wider and deeper since then so it might be better. Easier to find from the bay side I believe. Bill is certainly a good teacher.
Northern channel is a straight line at about 5 degrees as you turn out of the Rous. It’s deep, wide and calm for the last few months. Definitely the preferred option unless it makes the trip south very unpleasant after exiting.
I haven't used it for 2 or 3 years but I did hear much the same thing a couple of weeks ago. I will have to check it out next time I am heading north. Thanks for the confirmation.
back in 80s we had fishermans channel .think its same as amity channel .lotsa big bullsharks round amity in channel. seen a bloke n his mate help another boat that bottomed on that bar .driver [ helper ] drove near stuck boat which was nearlly side on to swell n he jumped out n grabbed stuck boat by gunnel n managed to point bow back into swell .he jumped in n trimmed up engine n got off the bar .we had chat with him at cleveland .he was saying most dont relise if your bottomed you can stand in water n point yourself in correct direction n up trim n go ..great info as usual , it can be a buggar especially when coming back in late arvo with sun in your eyes
I was on the bar the day the cricketers went down in the. Saw the bow of their boat sticking up and went over to see if we could help. Circled around but couldn't find anyone. Fortunately, they had managed to swim to North Stradbroke. Heaps of bull sharks all around that area. They still have the shark lines out and always catching them. As for the sun in your eyes, I sure appreciate my GPS when coming back late in the arvo. Way better than in the old days.
@@weFishAU the old days was tough . we had a paper sounder n the back then , new fish finders were more like the first computer games lol .we used landmarks as youve mentioned on other videos .on the charts then they had the landmarks n showed you a pict of how to line things up. i got a photo of me n my lil brother on the beach at lookout pub .only dirt roads n wild horses .there was 100ft of bitumen infront of the pub n bout 200ft bitumen at the barge offload .we were holding massive snapper n sweetlip caught between the pub n flatrock .the fisherman would beach the timber boats below the pub n take few fish up to sell to locals n then grab few largies n head back out .only a few houses had elect then too.great memories of big fish n plenty of them mainly caught on big handlines .
The first time I ever crossed the bar the fellow who took me stopped at the Rufus King and we caught some nice snapper. There was still structure above the waterline back then.
I did mine back in around '07ish. Hope he's still doing them 'cause it was excellent - I was a CQ lad moving to SEQ, so completely new to me.
He was still doing them last I heard, last year some time. Excellent course.

Yeah, we did okay with the technology we had at the time and we have some great memories of what it was like. I'd hate to go back there though ;-).
In a good day I head straight out left side of the rofus ship wreck. Otherwise like you mainly use the amity channel
