Offshore Amberjack
s08e04
In this episode, I headed offshore with a plan to fish 3 good marks before returning to the bay to spend the night.
Things went very well until they didn’t. I had boat problems, which forced me to shorten the trip, but I still consider it a great day on the water.

Moreton Bay School Mackerel
Просмотров 4 тыс.День назад
s08Se3 In this episode, I take our son-in-law out to catch a few school Mackerel in the bay. We also had high hopes of catching some crabs, or at least locating where they might be hiding. We did okay on the Mackerel for the amount of time we spent trolling for them and Anthony took home a good feed for his family. The next episode in this series will be about down vision sonar. I am unsure if the next video I upload will be a fishing video or the next in this series. Stay tuned to find out. The Freeman Channel

s07e54 In this, my last video for the year, I will talk a little about going offshore via the Freeman Channel. This can be as rough as a bar crossing at times, but if you pick your weather, it can also be much safer. If you are confident enough to take your boat offshore but have never done it, you can get some GPS marks from this video to help you find the channel for the first time. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬...
Two Surprise Catches

s07e53 In the episode, I head up to Hutchisons to try a new (new to me) method of trolling for a wahoo. It was a good trip. Although I didn’t manage a wahoo, I did get a mixed bag and a couple of real surprises including one of my favorite eating fish. I also got one fish that I have always said I would sample if I ever caught one. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a case of the wanting bein...
A Surprise Catch at the Foul Ground
Просмотров 2 тыс.Месяц назад
s07e52 The main aim of this trip was to see if I could find where the crabs were before Christmas. I would like to get a feed for our family's Christmas Day lunch, if possible. Of course, this is subject to my luck in finding them and the vagrancy of the weather. After dropping the pots, I headed to Harries to see if I could pick up a fish or two while waiting. Harries didn’t produce for me, so...
Sonar 103 - Bottom Hardness and Speed

s07e51 In this third video of the series, I will examine the hardness of the ocean floor. This will allow you to determine whether you are fishing over mud, sand, or rocks. It is essential to know if you are fishing the correct area for your target species. I also explain the effect of speed on the fish arches. I’ll say here that I have seen a lot of videos on RUclips that talk about how sounde...

A Better Rod Holder

s07e48 What's in a name? That which we call a rod holder by any other name would work just as well. OR WOULD IT? It took me a long time to realise it, but all rod holders are not created equal. s07e47 After the last few rather pitiful hauls of crabs, I thought it was time to go looking for them in earnest. I decided that I would drop pots here and there, go for a troll for an hour or so, and then go back and check the pots. Very informative! Thanks for your efforts! I really appreciate it. I am wondering if DFF3D can detect the fish in sonar shadow?
Thank you. Yes and no, sorta. The B54 multibeam transducer sends out 40 x 3° beams to make a total coverage of 120° side to side. Each beam will have a sonar shadow and fish will not be detectable inside that shadow but taken in total, the overall sonar shadow will be reduced by virtue of the much narrower individual beams.
@@weFishAU Thanks!I have a better understanding of sonar shadow now.
One solution to not enough dashboard room - Could probably use a phone or ipad and octopus tripod/mount to anywhere on dash. Then install navigation software on the device. Thank you for the fishing tips, all the best.
The Time Zero Phone/Ipad Software is called - TZ iBoat | iPad and iPhone marine App to search on google if needed.
Years ago I used to run a tablet with the navionics app for navigation so I could devote the full screen of the MFD to the sounder. It does help. The problem with the TimeZero is that it runs on a small windows computer and uses the HDMI imput on the Furuno for its display. I would need a 12v computer monitor to go with it.
Yeah, unfortunately I have an android and the TZ software on android is not as good. :-(
@@weFishAU Ah well alls good, unless you could use the tablet for Timezero otherwise that's probably all she wrote. Also, what's your preferred way of receiving internet signal when offshore?
My tablet is android as well and the TimeZero software needs Windows and a reasonably good CPU. I have a mate with a large boat and starlink, that would be my "preferred" way. The way I do it on my budget is to turn my phone into a hotspot and connect via that. A bit hit and miss for reception, depending on where I am fishing. I have seen some 4G marine units with antennas which should give increased range but I haven't investigated them.
I'm sure your aware but the bag limit for yakka is 20. Only reason I'm saying something is you are usually very informative but this time you just said you filled it up and no mention of limits.
To be honest, I couldn't count exactly how many I had, let alone how many of each species once they were swimming around in the tank. But you are right, I should have mentioned that.
Another great trip. That AJ gave you a workout, but what a pleasurable one. Thanks as always.
Thank you. It sure did. Great fun though.
I thought that I saw you going towards the Rous channel early Tuesday morning. I made the decision to stay in the bay ( I only had half a tank of fuel and did not want to risk it) and troll for spotty mackerel, but no luck along the banks. Next time (weather permitting), I will have to tackle the bar and try my luck offshore. That amberjack certainly made it all worthwhile. Hope the steering is an easy fix too.
It was great weather on Tuesday pity you were short on fuel. I was planning to troll around the Hope banks when I came back in the afternoon, had the steering not failed. Still waiting for the parts to arrive but it should be an easy fix.
nice day out . when was that ? next time you get an AJ try steaking it n bbq it .yum . we been waiting for all the fresh to go up here in bundy .lately if its not raining its blowing a gail like today .great video as usual .cheers
Thank you. I was out on Tuesday, 28th. A great day, even better than the forecast. I will give Amberjack steaks a go next time.
Great video! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge in such a thorough way! Heading to the Rous tomorrow for the first time and all this information is invaluable.
Thanks for watching, I hope it helps you catch a feed! A bit over a week ago there were plenty of Mackerel there. I hear they have moved out to the Hope banks now.
Yep plan is to troll for mackerel in the early morning then fish the last hour or so of the run in tide for whiting in fishermans gutter.
Good plan. If you're like squid you might also thow a squid jig in Fishermans Gutter. I hear there are some aroung.
Nice fish
Thanks!
another great vid with plenty info . back in 80s we fished mud overnight n caught many big [ 10lb ] snapper n big sweetlip .best was sun just coming up n sun set . there were a few coral gutters you could get up n anchor over night . that was the best fishing .i took my first wife there for campout n she was freaked out all night lol didnt know at the time but she was pyshic .nowonder a man likes fishing solo or with mates lol
Thank you. No shortage of fish (or ghosts) at Mud Island :-)
@@weFishAU have you fished the ledge north of flat rock ? or the 24 fathom reefs off southport ?
I last fished the 24-fathom reef not long after I got my current boat, about 5 years ago. Its great fishing out from the seaway but I don't get down that way much. I used to fish around Flat Rock a fair bit before they made it a green zone, since then, I have found alternatives further afield. I do fish Sevens Reef on occasion, northeast of Flat Rock.
@@weFishAU flat rock had heaps of flathead years ago mainly small stuff bout 12inch long n never caught much there but approx 8 miles north theres a ledge that runs south north n bout half mile to 3/4 mile long . if you got the drift right you would get a heap snapper n pearlies . most prob been fished to death now but might be worth a look if in the area . 24s were great from just before sunrise to mid morn . use the burley can trick lol .was great for shark under the 900mm long which i use to keep for the kids seeing no bones , they loved fish cocktails n sweet n sour fish .even now at 39/37 they still love it lol
Ah, yes. I know that ledge. I would have put it more NNE than N but it is still producing. I have had several productive trips there in the last few years.
Thanks for this. Do you find that you don’t need to replace the bearings yearly with these?
I'm guessing you are referring to the bearing buddy video. I check them after 12 months and again at 18 months, just to be on the safe side. I have been replacing them after 2 years even if they seem to have some life left in them.
Great to see some spotty mackerel about, despite losing the rig. Hope to get out soon and try my luck. Thanks for sharing your tips Paul.
Thanks for watching, I hope you get some good fish as well.
You never mentioned anything about mosquitoes. Are they a problem while sleeping at night?
I haven't had a problem with mosquitoes at all, at least not where I anchor. I generally like to be a bit of a distance from the shore (but not in any main channel). I see some fellows anchored almost against some islands, mainly in the southern end of the bay there they drop off sharply. I suspect they might have an issue. Horse flys on the other hand, can be an issue. Fortunately they are only an issue during the day when they are easy enough to swat. Keeping the boat out a bit from the shore limits this problem also.
Get a dremel or grinder and make the locating grooves in those rod holders deeper. Then they won’t spin when hit. Or put the rods away and just use a handline for the paravanes. You’ve gotta handline the last bit anyway so why not all the way? It would mean you may need to get rid of some of your deck clutter though.
Thanks for the suggestions but the locating grooves are fine. The rod holders have a rotating top and a bolt to tighten it down. I think it was the top that rotated although I did tighten them before putting the rods in. The bottom may have jumped out of the baynoette groves but I doubt it. The hit was particuarly heavy, definately not a schoolie. I used to handline a few years back, I catch a lot more since I switched to rods, with less tangles as well.

Do you find you get less bites using wire trace? I personally don’t seem to notice a difference using a short 10-15cm length of wire
I don't use a wire trace as a rule. Never while trolling spoon lures. The few times I have tried using a short wire trace on a bait rig I haven't got any good fish on it. I also have to say that I haven't used wire enough to decide one way or the other.
Sad to lose a rig like that but we have all done it. It's an excuse to buy another. Great trip, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the comment, losing a rig is always a bummer, but it has been replaced.
Good work you are a youtube hero, to save time you should just give out fish at the ramp to save people time putting there boats in...
Thanks for the compliment, but I enjoy teaching people how to catch their own fish.
The DPI might have a few questions about that 😃
As long as you don't ask for anything in return you are free to give away as many fish as you want (within bag limits).
@@weFishAU yeah, I know mate, twas a joke, hence the smiley face😃
I missed the smiley :-(
Object lesson here, always put the safety line on BEFORE you start trolling. Looks like a great day other than that. I was on the bay last wednesday, were you out there? Heard someone on the VHF that sounded a lot like you.
I (almost) always put the safety line on before starting to troll, this time was an exception and I paid for it almost immediately. :-( Lesson learnt. No, it wasn't me. I was out on the Friday before.
I have an awesome Father in Law, but I wish he could put me onto the fish in the Bay. Ha ha.
He probably would it he could. :-)

Thank you for the feedback. I am glad you are finding them helpful.
the great thing with your youtube videos is they reflect what every day norm n his mates can identify with . besides getting away from the wife for the day lol , we can have us time n catch a feed if lucky .i can remember my first wife called it wishing cause the first few times i went out after getting my first boat , i caught bugga all. but once i got a sounder n had few mates that knew some good spots she shutup lol . great info for newbies to fishing or for us old farts [im over 70 ] to get a refresher course .ive mixed alot of info from diff blokes ive had with me over the years n always get a feed .my health restricts me now but my eldest is fishing mad n he takes me out off bundy weather permitting . a bad day fishing is still better than a day at work .

my dad who was a great fisho , taught me to always cut the line about 2 foot above knot eels .reason being they leave a slime on the line n fish hardly take that line after its had eel on it .nasty buggers biggest one i got was over 6 ft long at the road heading to the old bris port area .
That is a very interesting observation. I don't recall ever hearing that before and I can't say I have noticed a correlation myself, however it does make a lot of sense. I know for sure that some brands of sunscreen do that, therefore I never use any sunscreen and prefer to dress like a desert sheik instead :-) Thanks for the info, I will be sure to do that in future.
I've really been enjoying these technical videos. It's easy to see, you've put a lot of time into the production and just want to let you know it's appreciated. I have the Furuno TZT3 12" and 10" units with traditional 2d and Dff3d. I also have a 9" Simrad unit, so I can directly relate to these videos. Being my boat is only 23', I have to work on my transducer placement because my current placement doesn't provide the best picture due to the lack of room to properly install them. I think in the near future I will try and install the Dff3d transducer in a fairing block, similar to your setup. Either way I just wanted to let you know this series is great so far and I can't wait to see how it progresses.
Thanks for the positive feedback, I really appreciate it. We have very similar setups. I think putting the B54 transducer for the DFF5D in a fairing block was a good move, but I was lucky to get it right first time. My other transducers are transom mounted, and it took a number of trips out to get the placement right. Well worth the effort.
Wow, that was very informative.

i used to do slow troll with squid skirts n a bit of mullet fleesh or a whole poddy mullet or gar . n id do laps around harrt atinkson reef .normally early morn just as sun comes up over straddy .picked up some big macks n few cobia .one day the wife was sitting in a fold up chair sunbaking n the 4/0 penn rachet went off bigtime lol she was only in bikini bottom n ended up arseup on the deck covered in pilchard bits lol . im up bundy now but miss the bay n outside plus really miss the reefs off southport n tweed
One of the boys has a mate up in Makay who gets out to the reef when he can and does quite well. I don't know much about fishing Bundy but I did have an uncle up there who always put on a good spread of crab and fish whenever the family passed through. I was quite young then so I don't remember what species they were or if he ever mentioned where he fished. I have trolled squid skirts offshore but like several other things, I haven't made the connection between what I do offshore and what I do in the bay. I've only been trolling spoons in the bay for a few years and have never done much good until the sun comes up to flash off the spoons. Now I will try trolling squid skirts like I do offshore early/late when there isn't enough sun for the spoons. Thanks for the tip.
spent many a day n night fishing round peel in 80/90s n always caught a good feed .as long as you could get threw the motherinlaw fish lol .otherwise the old jetties on straddie not far from peel alwas had good fish . miss those days
I don't mind the mother-in-law fish if I bleed them, get them straight on ice and eat them the same day. Not in north Qld though, they taste different. I agree Peel is a great fishing spot and fairly central to numerous nearby alternatives.
4 years on mate are you still happy with it cheers????
I certainly am. I am gratefull for it every time I launch or retrieve. The best bit of kit on the boat is a toss up between this and the Lone Star anchor winch. I wouldn't want to be without either.
@ ok thanks
Battery voltage a tad low?
No. Voltage on the bus sits around 14v when the engine is running, a bit over 12 when it is not. I have a Victron voltage controller between the battery and the sounders to smooth the supply and make sure the voltage is less than +/- 0.1 volts of the set point. It could probably be adjusted up a couple of tenths but since everything is working fine I leave well enough alone.
Attach your burley bucket to your anchor rope and drop anchor. Your boat is always downstream of the anchor, right in the middle of the burley trail :)
True, and it works well in a tinny or centre console. But it is a PITA to climb out through the hatch of a half cabin to do that at my age. :-(
@ lol, fair enough. I struggle with that too. I recently installed an electric motor with spot lock to make my life a little easier 😂
Great video - thanks
Thanks for watching!
What's the length of your boat in meters? Will multiple fish finders interfere with each other?
My boat is 6.2m. They won't interfere if they are operating on different frequencies. I have 4 transducers on my boat, B54, TM265LH, Humminbird, and a Cannon (for thei downrigger). The frequencies are far enough apart that I don't get any interference.

You have an incredible talent for something being complex and explaining it in a simple easy to understand way. Great content as always
Thank you, I appreciate the comment. Glad you are getting something out of it.
very helpful information Paul. I now wish I had 3D imaging as well as 2D. It certainly makes fish images much easier to interpret. I will, however, rearrange my Axiom sonar to display both high and low frequency images together as per your screen layout. Hopefully, this will help with better image interpretation.
Yes, I really like my 3D but you can get a lot from 2D once you master how to interpret it! Splitting the screen with high and low frequencies will help.
Happy New Year ***
Happy new year to you as well.
Hey Paul. Love your vids. I run the same way, just a little closer to the beach!!
Thank you. It is a wide channel so you can run a lot closer and still be in plenty of water.
@@weFishAU For sure. Its not called the washing machine for nothing. There is another much smaller and safer washing machine at the bottom SE corner of bribie island close to land, that stands up with wind against tide.
That happens all over the bay. The penalty of having a bay that runs in the same direction and most of the prevailing winds and with exits to the sea at the north and south so the currents mostly run in those direction also. I generally go out the South Passage Bar and that can get interesting on a whole other level. :-)
@@weFishAU yeah good point!
Thanks Paul for another great video of knowledge. Coincidentally, I was fishing the Inner Freeman channel with mates on Boxing Day and managed a few grassies. All the best for the new year and look forward to your next episode on sounders.
You're welcome, it's great to hear you had a good day. There are some really nice grassies in that area. Happy new year.
Thanks weFish au. Really enjoy your videos, thank you for all your work in producing these videos for us. They hit the mark for me and looking forward to your future project's. Happy and safe new year to you and yours.
You're welcome, I glad you find them useful, Happy New Year to you too!
Cheers for all your great content , do you run a autopilot on your boat also what sounder should I get looking to mainly do offshore work cheers
You're welcome! Yes, I use an autopilot, which makes solo trolling much easier. The transducer is arguably more important than the MFD. Most MFD manufacturers offer very good and reliable equipment, although I've always preferred Furuno when I could afford it. Depending on the depth you plan to fish, I would recommend an Airmar 1Kw CHIRP transducer as a minimum. Choose an MFD that matches your chosen transducer and offers the features you want. For instance, some Furuno MFD/Airmar Transducer combinations can tell you the bottom composition (rock/rubble/sand/mud/etc.) out of the box, while others require an additional black box to do the same. Bottom composition is a worthwhile feature but may come at the cost of some other feature you regard as more important, or the price of the combination may not be suitable. I've been making some videos on sounder features recently, and I'll finalize the 2D transducer side of it in the next episode, which should be out on the second weekend of January 2025. I realise this advice is very general. If you have specific questions about depth and the fish you want to target, I'll try to give more specific answers.
@ yer awesome when I go to purchase a sounder I’ll keep all this in mind especially the transducer thanks once again much appreciated
No problem. You're welcome.
Hey mate what furuno you running cheers
I have the TZ3 with a DFF3D black box, B54 and TM265LH transducers. If you want bottom discrimination then choose something other than a 265LH otherwise you will need a second black box for that. Furuno have released the TZX as a successor to TZ3 which should bring the price of the TZ3 down.
Love all the videos mate definitely boosted my confidence with all your in depth knowledge!
You are welcome. I'm glad you are getting out there!
@weFishAU if youve got a quick second what's your thoughts on Tuesday for the Cape? I'm usually in the bay but the wave intervals have got me questioning how good it'll be out there. Thanks again legend 🤙
The forecast I am seeing on Willyweather is 6 seconds on a 0.6m SSE swell. That would be great. GFS says 0.8m SSE with 6 second period. Not too bad. If you get to the cape and decide it is not to your liking you could double back and fish the coffee rock reefs north of Moreton. With a SSE swell conditions there should be good.
Those little sharks are decent eating
I do keep them from time to time, depends what else I have in the freezer.
