Thank you so much for this video! I've always enjoyed learning table etiquette and other etiquette and manners. Ans Although I've never had the opportunity to travel, I've always been curious and love to learn about other cultures around the world.
I've been finding lots of etiquette reels lately on facebook. And there are often people in the comments saying don't learn that kind of etiquette, just eat with your hands.
Unfortunately, they don't go into detail and seem to just want to harass people in facebook comments for not knowing how to eat nicely with our hands. So here I am, looking for the proper way to eat with hands.
I will certainly try here at home. 😊
I do have a question, if you don't mind my asking. Are there any foods you would not eat with your hands? Maybe any foreign foods that are not Indian and maybe just not prepared in a way that's good for eating with your hands?
I'm thinking of spaghetti. I cook it in sauce with vegan plant based cheese melted all over it.
I want to try rice and lentil soup the way you showed. And potatoes.

First of all, thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment.
I totally agree with you on etiquettes because for me, it's just a way of showing respect to the people around me and the culture that I'm in. If people don't want to follow the etiquettes, that's fine with me too.
I've also gotten some comments like that on this video so I am aware that that sentiment exists.
The dish that comes to mind that I wouldn't eat with my hands is ramen or any kind of noodle soup. The reason I think that is because with ramen, I want the soup, the noodles and the toppings in one bite. It would be hard to experience that without chopsticks and a soup spoon.
Whenever I eat lentils, rice and potatoes with my hands, it brings a sense of comfort and satiety so I'm very excited for you to try. 🙏🏼

Are there warm soups in Indian cuisine, and do Indians use a spoon for that? Are any cutlery permitted at a traditional Indian dining table? 😊

Yes, there are many soups in Indian cuisine like Paya (Mutton broth) or the various soups from Northeastern India. People either drink from the soup bowl (like sipping a cup) or use a soup spoon.
These are just my recommendations to make eating Indian food more enjoyable. You can eat however you choose to. ☺️

This is very similar to how Europeans ate with their hands before the modern use of cutlery spread widely. They also had rules about what parts of the hand should remain clean, and what part of the fingers was polite to use. In Mexico, and I suspect in other countries which have flat breads, tearing a piece of tortilla and using it to eat rice or beans or stews is also pretty common, and yes, that is also done neatly, without getting your whole hand sticky. Myself, I prefer eating with my hands where it's acceptable, and I like the flavor and texture combination of the flat bread with the dish I'm eating.

I didn't know the history behind it so thank you for sharing. That's what I do these days too. I eat with my hands where it's acceptable.

Thank you so much!!! Are men taught to eat this way also? There are also some ppl who seem to need to pork out fast. Wearing the food also seems to be the way which really grosses me out. So THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for showing us the proper way to eat this delicious food.

You're welcome! The etiquettes apply to everyone regardless of their gender. I'm so happy to hear that you found the video helpful. 🙂

Very useful video, but you didn't put in the cleaning step - for example, after your first discussion of eating with rice, the next discussion starts with your fingers clean - how did that happen? Do you leave the table to wash at a sink, is there a bowl of water and towel at the table, or do you just use a napkin?

Good point and I should have mentioned that. In India, there's typically a finger bowl which is essentially a bowl full of warm water with a slice of lemon in it to wash your hands.
I'm happy to hear you found it useful.
