Hi, I have a doubt. What does it mean for a substance not to have a fixed chemical formula? Like if it doesn't have a fixed chemical formula, then what kind of formula it has with example? Thank You
Even though some rocks are just that, minerals, are just a bit different, like a diamond, it’s rarity, is what makes it worth more, … basalt, is of volcanic nature, and it’s hardness is above many others on the MOHS scale, … liquid mercury, is a metal, but is generally not a solid, … hence the liquid portion of it is still a mineral, no?
Hey Michael, I teach 6th graders and needed something to introduce minerals today. Found your video and used it in class. It was super helpful. Thanks for sharing it freely with the rest of us. Bill
Great explanation. In my mineralogy class we're taught that substances don't need to be solid in order for them to be considered minerals. Mercury is liquid at a certain temperature but lower that temperature and the mercury becomes solid. Same for water which some consider a mineral and others don't.
A brief introduction to minerals? More like "A better way to instruct us so we can learn it all!" Thanks for creating this very informative series and I fully intend to watch until the end.
Mike, You have a gift for conveying knowledge as well as reminding a senior citizen of something he learned in grade school but forgot in the intervening years. I’m planning on doing some rockhounding in retirement and found your channel while doing some background work getting ready. Thanks for your efforts.
This video was perfect! I looked for many years for a video that could explain to me the difference between minerals, elements and rocks. Thank you for this!
You’ve done an awesome job with these Earth Science videos. Been pausing to review some of the topics me and my son have gone over before his next exam and found your videos. They cover everything and your presentation is refreshing. Thanks and keep it up! It’s been great practice to go over a chapter, watch your videos on the topics and have him do a short writing assignment to incorporate the lesson for review!
OMG this was the best video detailing Minerals. Thank you for breaking it down for us to understand clearly. The example s really put each criteria into perspective. Thank you. I now feel comfortable explaining the 5 criterias.
I still can't believe that I had to sit in a room for 6hrs just to understand this topic however the answer was right under my nose...... Thanks a looooot💯
This is the second of your videos that I have watched, and I have watched many hundreds of RUclips videos over the years. You have a real gift for making complex issues simple through clear explanations and talented logic. Thank you very much

Thank You Mike Sammartano, I was hoping you could provide us with an explanation for Fossilized wood and how it also seems to be able to contain minerals..
Thank you for this video! I was referred to you by my professor, Suzanne Metlay, as I will be taking the Praxis II exam tomorrow. It is really helpful to view videos on subjects for me since I am a visual learner. This video has been very helpful to me, and I thank you. I have a few more to view, too! Way to go, Michael!

Thank you sooo much I’ve been paying for classes and I didn’t understand but with this 10min video I understand very well thanks a lot I think I’m going to do great in my final exam:)
3:48 You should have also mentioned that Marcasite also has the same Chemical Formula as Pyrite. Any "Marcasite" in jewelry is actually Pyrite. Marcasite is too brittle to cut, and powders easily. Pyrite is a tougher Mineral, so it can be faceted.
Excellent vid, thank you very much. I teach middle school Science at an international school here in Bangkok, and these types of vids are very helpful. They explain the basics without going too far in depth chemically, which my kids haven't studied yet.
