Both have been classically trained. Rob was even training for opera, but not performed in over 15 years and felt very rusty.
He said he played this performance for his dad on Fathers Day and it made him cry. Amazing job. I have listened probably 50 times so far.
Austin is having the time of his life showing off his friends talent none of us knew about. Can see it in his smile.
Rob’s been holding out on us…now I want more! When I watched the premiere I lost my breath, and the tears flowed. Rob’s voice is so rich, warm and powerful. I thank Rob and Austin for this magnificent performance.

I knew your spirit animal would blow your mind with this. I could see Austin doing something like this (and he did this great, so impressed), but Rob was a complete shock... the tone if his voice singing opera is so entirely different than anything else he does... the man is truly a unicorn, he sings country, pop, soul, ballads, comedy... he even raps... and now this, is there nothing he can't do... what a talent!!!!!

Rob and Austin were both so nervous in the premiere chat - especially Rob. Afraid we weren't going to like it. Rob also went live on IG yesterday to thank everyone including reactors for the positive feedback. He said he's being sent a lot of reaction videos to it. As to "Why did they do that?". Just because they could! They absolutely nailed this even without any hammer. While they work as Home Free with their pals they do not get to shine like this. And this has not really a space in a big Home Free concert. There is no ugly tension in the group because each member has the freedom to do projects beneath their main career. The nicest thing for me and every home fry is the prospect of them getting better continuously for decades to come. Can only hope to be around as long as possible. Each one of them is unique and awesome and they are best together.
In the BTS video Rob and Austin said they both studied opera in college. Rob also said that he sang this to his father on Father's Day. No genre is off limits!

I thought they were lip synching also but this just shows the pure talent they each have. I have read in some of the comments that Rob has opera training. This is absolutely beautiful!! We need to hear more…❤

Well technically they were lip syncing in the video to the studio recording, but it is definitely Rob and Austin’s voices doing the singing.

this was stunning and such a surprise....it's crazy but after all the years of listening to these two I feel like a proud parent. I couldn't breath during the premier and cried happy tears all day.

I have never been a fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy. Each guy in Home Free is super talented on his own & in another league from any other group.
I actually am a fan of opera, but only live in person opera. I find I don't like it just on a record/CD. But this was pretty darned good.

I've been waiting for reaction to your spirit animal! You crack me up! I've seen several reactions that have ranged from actual tears to gobsmacked. (Or should we say Rob-smacked?!?!?!) Yours was the most... entertaining! Now go show Saucey Mom this video and let her bring you back to earth.
Rob's tone is so rich, that initially, I thought he was lip-syncing to another singer's recording; that, in the end, they'd turn the camera around, and there'd be a tape deck, or an opera star, and the whole thing would be a good giggle. Then, Austin launched in, and I recognized his vocal quality. It's easy to forget that these guys were classically trained vocalists before joining Home Free. Rob actually majored in vocal performance, speciallizing in opera. They may not be ready for La Scalla, but they knocked MY socks off!
Austin and Rob are amazing no matter what they do. Made Rob somewhat nervous but they did it so well. Home Free is an amazing group of singers. Never say they can't cause they will say... watch this. 😆 Thank you 😊

You can tell our guys have training and talent. This left me speechless the first time. Do you remember Gomer Pyle. They did a Jim Nabors on all of us. Also, remember they got on the Sing Off by choosing to be country acapella. Before that, they sang a little bit of everything - but not opera.

Think about this, they could be singing ANYTHING and performing ANYWHERE in the world making boo- coodles more money than they do and be way more famous yet they choose to stay together as a band of brothers performing for us . We are so very blessed that we have them in our lives! All of our favorite guy's are the most Amazing gentlemen and totally WONDERFUL humans! Their talents are unlimited IMHO! I have always had the utmost admiration and respect for all of the Home Free guys but somehow it has gone up to an undescribable level! When I heard this for the first time I cried

I just looked up Rob's training. Classically trained with a degree in voice. He has been playing with us. I have a degree in piano and spent six years playing for singers in training. Rob does it right! He is the real deal. Austin slips into some pop technique now and then, but Rob - OMG, I never expected that richness and power from him. 💕💕💕
Isn’t this amazing? I was in awe the first time I heard it and still get chills. If you listen carefully to the Sea Shanty Medley you can hear a little bit of Opera Rob coming through in his solos. I even noticed it more live.

Both Rob and Austin are classically trained in many styles of singing, including opera, but haven't done it for years. I think it's amazing that they both stepped out of their comfort zone for this, showing us just how vast their respective ranges are musically. Also, not to sound negative, but you seemed so busy OVERreacting that I worry you didn't really hear the song at all. Please tell me you went back to listen to it again once the shock wore off, it really is a beautiful aria.
One of the judges on The Sing-Off said they should take every possible opportunity to take risks and “jump off the ledge.” They did that here and landed on their feet!
This is why music is such an amazing language, all in itself.......I do not understand one word they sang, but I felt every lyric, every note, and every emotion ❣❣❣

This is insane. It is extremely good. Really fantastic. Both are doing great. But Rob, I'm perplexed. His voice is just magical , warm and rich. Chills just ran through my body. It flows into my heart. He will be able to stand with the greatest of opera singers. It's not often that I listen to songs by opera singers 5 times of more in a row. But here it is. Of course I hope that both will always continue to do Home Free, but I wouldn't think it wrong that such "trips" are made more often. Opera, country, ballads, soul etc. I think anything is possible..
What is this? It is the delicious box of chocolates that is Home Free. Just another sampling of the fabulous talent encapsulated in this group. After the fabulous music you've heard from these guys, how could you doubt for one second that it's them singing? Have you actually been listening to the gorgeous music you've heard from Home Free all this time? This performance didn't surprise me in the least. I often wondered how long it would be before one or both of them decided to tackle opera. Rob studied classical music in college and Austin's musical theater training gives him a foundation for opera. Just listening to the power and talent in what they do within the Home Free arena, it isn't a big leap to imagine this beautiful offering. I've heard this aria performed by different artists who sing opera professionally and I have to say Rob and Austin's performance is more relatable and beautiful. They didn't just TRY to sing opera, they succeeded greatly!
There is a magical thing called "variety". Artists, especially those with formal training, can sing more than one type of music. They actually "like" diversity in tastes, who knew. Now you know your spirit animal has a whole other side to him so you must too (enjoy the visual, wait for it, there it is... (lol)). Have a great one all.

Welcome to the classically trained and possible. Rob and Austin can both "rock" the opera world when they want to. They just prefer what they do now. Aren't you glad they do? As happy as I would be to listen to them sing this way , I am so gad they do what they do so well. They were meant to sing country together with Home Free.

I’ve see this so many times (counting reaction videos) and I’m still in awe!
Rob excelled in Opera at college. This MY wheelhouse, as I too studied and sang opera for 20 years. This was absolute perfection. Their Italian was spot on...and it is not easy for someone like Austin who isn't used to it.

And of course, they nailed it. Rob was the surprise, yes, with bringing back his opera training from 15 years ago. Austin doing his usual incredible classical training but the emotion he puts into every single word is what pulls me in, near tears. Nick, with Austin, it's easier, but with Rob, I had no idea......I've heard others, who know more than I, say that Rob also trained as a classical opera singer in college, but really hasn't sung that way in about 15 years now....Austin approached him with this idea, and boom, things happened.....I was mind-blown too, so you're not the only one.

Some are saying Rob has had Opera training in College, I am not certain of it, but I did hear him say in his insta that he was pretty nervous about it because he has not sung opera in 15 years, so if he did get training or has singing experience in opera, it was many years ago and it really sounds like he has been doing it all along and he hasn't so I'm pretty baffled and impressed.
Yes he did. His degree is vocal performance which is primarily opera. I think part of his nerves were him wondering how people would react.
Austin and Rob talked about this quite a bit in the BTS for this video. Rob got his degree in vocal performance where you have to do a ton of opera training. Austin majored in musical theatre which required some opera training and music theory, but was more of an acting degree than anything. Clearly both are trained very very well, but they were both nervous about how it was going to be received since it's not their usual style and neither of them have sang this way in a long time.

We have all said these guys from Home Free can sing anything. Well, I guess they just proved it. Other than maybe Linda Ronstadt, I know of no other county /pop singers that have competently sung opera like these two. Like you, we have all been blown away by this performance, particularly by Rob.

Rob has a degree in Vocal Performance and is a highly skilled and amazing tenor. Austin's education and training is in the musical theater side of music.
It's obvious that Rob has classical training if you know anything about the genre. His voice is rounder and warmer than Austin's which is lovely but too bright for opera. Rob's voice would fill a theater and would soar above a live orchestra. Austin's would not.
Rob's Italian is beautiful and if you look at his mouth shape, it's like an oval whereas Austin's is wide. That oval mouth is a dead giveaway of someone who is classically trained.
Rob is incredibly versatile. I've heard him adopt the characteristics of several styles: country, soul, pop, music theater.
