Charithra is so beautiful. I loved her as Edwina. Diamond of the Season, apex of the triangle, and deserving of the title Princess. Watching her fight to claim her autonomy was rewarding. In a way it mirrors her own life which is wonderful because that is not easy to do. 52:47 is very insightful. Great interview.

As a British-born individual of Sri Lankan Tamil descent, my formative years were steeped in narratives of racial discrimination, both from historical recounts and personal experiences. These stories invariably painted a picture of racism as a one-way street, primarily directed at non-white populations. This perspective, while rooted in the undeniable reality of systemic and widespread racial injustices faced by people of colour, inadvertently obscured a broader understanding of racism.
Attending university in the UK, a diverse and cosmopolitan setting, brought about a profound shift in my perception. Engaging closely with friends from various backgrounds, including white individuals, unveiled a nuanced reality of racism. It became apparent that racism, at its core, is an insidious belief in the superiority of one race over another, and it can manifest towards any racial group, including white people. Instances where white individuals are subjected to prejudice or derogatory remarks based on their race, though arguably different in historical and social impact, are nevertheless manifestations of the same pernicious ideology.
To illustrate, consider the racial stereotyping of an Indian person being told they ‘smell like curry’, a Black individual receiving unsolicited comments about their physical appearance, or a white person derogatively called a ‘snowflake’. Each of these acts, while varying in context and historical baggage, share a common thread of reducing an individual to mere racial caricatures. It’s essential to recognise that while the scale and systemic nature of racism experienced by people of colour can be more damaging and pervasive, this does not invalidate the experiences of racism faced by white individuals.
The fight against racism, in its most effective form, must be an all-encompassing crusade against all racial prejudice and stereotyping, irrespective of the targeted race. It is only through acknowledging and addressing racism in all its forms that we can hope to foster a truly inclusive and equitable society.
Having said that, listening to Charithra articulate her thoughts is invariably an enlightening experience. In my own terms, I would describe her as an ‘influential influencer’-a phrase that perfectly encapsulates her profound impact on the discourse. Her assertion about the inherent pride within the Tamil community resonates deeply with me. This sense of pride swells further when I reflect on the fact that she shares our heritage. Her participation in this podcast has not only been insightful but also a source of immense pride. Thank you, Charithra, for your invaluable contribution.
