  • Spinal stenosis is when the nerves are compressed and pinched. This causes pain- but not always! Not everyone needs surgery just because they have lumbar stenosis on an MRI. This video will help patients and providers understand who NEEDS surgery!

Well done videos and explanations. I just had my first consult with spine doctor here in South Carolina. MRI presented spine slipping forward and narrowing of column tube. During clinical evaluation, I almost fell on top of my Dr when trying to walk on my heel to toe. My left side is week, muscle tremors with shaking, left thigh muscle wants to turn inward, I have fallen due to muscles giving out. Looks like I am a candidate for surgery with rods, screws and fusion using some near by bone and some spinal fluid.
    Thanks again,
    Dr Michael Hovanec

I've had four back the last surgery the last surgery was a 2-day surgery 9 hours one day 7 hours till the next day, the surgery that I had was from T8 to S2 16 screws plus one screw in my left pelvis to hold everything together then three disc replacement and to do the discs replacements they had to cut me on my side and move some of my organs out of the way and that's not all what they did I'm in so much pain right now

My experience has been to try the least invasive treatment first. I blew several discs in 2007 causing severe sciatica down my left leg. My doctor and I went down the list. Tried everything. Five years into it and the pain finally became unmanageable. I had a spinal fusion L4 L5, L5 S1 and it worked. In 2019 it came back low lumbar back pain, some sciatica and shooting pain in my arms. I have spinal stenosis in several places, but L3 L4 seems to be the worst. I'm having an epidural on the 5th and can't wait. It's complicated by osteoarthritis not just in my back but my hips. For me I know my insurance is going to want to see attemps made that are less invasive before trying surgery. Surgery is a big deal. I'm a widow too, so recovery from surgery would at home might mean I need home health care unless my daughter's could help out for awhile. Spinal fusion to 4 months to recover. I'm very hopeful this will help, even if only for awhile.

Dr. Donally, I had a double level spine surgery at L2-L3 (lateral entry through my side) and a L5-S1 ALIF on Aug. 1, 2023. The surgeon placed a cage in L2-L3 to open up the disc space. Everything was great for 1st 2 months. I had a bad fall flat on my back, plus I teach martial arts (for 45 years) and I may have done some things that I probably shouldn’t have so soon. (I’m my own worst enemy.). Anyway , I began feeling pain going down both legs that has become unbearable! My dr. Ordered an MRI and yesterday we reviewed it. He said I have a huge disc herniating at the L2-L3 level and stated he doesn’t know how I’m even walking. We’ve scheduled another surgery where he’ll go in thru my back, remove the bone, and fuse the discs. In your opinion, is this what you’d prescribe? I’ve tried 2 courses of a 6 day steroidal pill pack, also oxycodone doesn’t even help the pain. Did I do this to myself by either falling or doing more than I probably should have while teaching. I DO remember one night when I was teaching an adult class, I felt a twinge in my back and said to myself, “that doesn’t feel good or right”. My surgeon has done 2 other fusions on me in the past with no problems. He is well respected and works at a practice in Northern Virginia so I think I’m the cause of this herniation. What’s your comments? Thanks from an old martial artist that has hopefully learned a lesson.

I have lower back pain that presents after walking for 2 hours. A CT scan showed Broad Based Disc Protrusions at L4-L5 and L5 to S1. Spondylosis of the lumbar spine. I have NO leg pain whatsoever. The first surgeon suggested a spinal fusion and I said NO. Then he said 2 Coflex spacers. I got a second opinion and he said if I don't have leg pain, the Coflex spacers would do more harm than good. He suggested a laminectomy. Any thoughts?

He never got better and ended up passing a month later.. I just don’t understand I feel like there was some malpractice or something. Does this sound normal to you ? 💔

So I recently injured myself and I have central and bilateral disc protrusion at the L5-S1 level, more marked on the right side with impingement on the thecal sac and both S1 nerve roots. I was in severe pain but have been doing PT for 3 weeks now. My main issue now is the numbness on my right leg which I guess is the S1 nerve. I am scheduled for an epidural injection on 9-12-23, will that actually help with the nerve pain or will I still need some type of surgery? I know you can't answer specifically on my case, but in general do epidural injections calm the nerve pain? Thank you in advance Dr. Donnally.
