My main concern is the direction that city is being taken to, I remember some years ago the buildings being targeted at 8-12 year range, a bit of an older audience, and that opened up a lot more possibilities for details that adults could easily enjoy too, it's what originally made city a great line, not as detailed as creator, but a cheaper alternative. Loved the review, keep up the awesome work.
If I gave my 4-year-old son the option between these two sets, while he would love this set...I still think he would choose barracuda Bay! I know I would, lol, so hopefully I am teaching him well!
There must be some very unhappy staff members at LEGO at the moment because every decision made by senior management regarding colour, design and price in this set is indicative of cost cutting, shameless recycling and cynically manipulating a loyal and loving fan base.
I don’t wanna be that guy....but.....this one is too expensive.... the other ones were $99 this one is 200$ but most of the stuff is reused like the tram and the limousine
First, the stuff here present seems incomplete and generally worse than the previous one, like the police station or the police truck. As you, I'm definitely not the target of this set, but 'as a kid' I'm not impressed and 'as a parent' I'm pissed off reading the pricetag. I read 1500 pcs, and I expect to pay no more than 150€ (which still seems A LOT, for not having trademarks or copyrights to pay). Then, 180€ (here in Italy) is simply a theft.
The high price of this positions this right on the same range as a lot of very seriously impressive alternative sets, collectable or not. It's the same price as Pirates of Barracuda Bay, several Star Wars UCS sets, costs more than several Creator Expert Modular Buildings and is a lot more costly than quite a number of large City sets. My main problem with this is the relative lack of cohesiveness with the set-pieces; it feels like a lot of small separate sets thrown together to become a mega bundle, which puts it outside of the realm of reasonable affordability for kids. If you want City sets, you're honestly better off spending $200 on several smaller City sets which would not only be comparable in volume, maybe greater than this set, but also likely to be a lot cheaper, given that they are much more widely available than this set and are likely to have been discounted by other retailers.
I have this on in the background as I do some colouring-in, and I had to rewind to make sure I actually heard "hearing aid". I'm not deaf myself, but it warmed my heart to see that detail included on a minifigure. Hopefully that head can come back in a future people pack.
This is definitely a downgrade. There isn’t a full building in the set. Every year before game you at least 2 buildings and a couple of vehicles. Last years and the year before was pretty good. But this year is not worth it. And that limo is practically a copy of one from a year or two ago.
I'd love if they did the tram on it's own kinda like that old transport hub set, with a decent sized platform and maybe like with road base plates with in built tram tracks like in real life. It's also my favourite out of all the trams they've made despite being small
I'm not so sure I would ever pay $200 for this one, but to each his own. I just like fully enclosed buildings instead of open backed buildings unless they are particularly detailed.
So many upsetting things that you point out in this set. I couldn’t imagine dropping 200 dollars for this. Thanks for the excellent review as always Gnaj!
I’ve personally been losing interest in the city theme over the last few years (mostly due to an inundation of repetitive vehicle builds), but this set breaks that mold completely! I’d love to see buildings with more depth/detail, but the vehicles feel unique and appropriate for the setting. Thanks as always Jang!
Same! I'm a big fan of the airport/airplane sub-sets and I was excited to learn earlier this year that they were releasing new sets. But I was disappointed when I saw the leaked pics and then when we did the review I was like meh. I MAY get the plane on BrickLink but now pay for the full set.
"I’ve personally been losing interest in the city theme over the last few years (mostly due to an inundation of repetitive vehicle builds)" I'm glad someone said it! I wish they brought back some of the older, more "unique" themes. Or maybe have themes cross over, just to spice things up a bit. The old arctic sets for city were cool, but a bit uninspired with their builds. The old mining theme was cool, but that too was done to death, with their repetitive vehicles. We seem to get police (and firefighters, to a lesser extent) ever year. Regarding having themes "cross over," I think it would be cool to see other themes make a cameo in the city theme. Maybe a City + Pirate theme, where you have a Caribbean fort or something, with civilians walking around with uniformed soldiers with muskets. Or maybe City + Ultra Agents, where you have a police set, but everything's just a bit more "high tech" looking. Nothing to stray too far away from the City theme, but you can obviously see the other theme's inspired influences. City + Castle? A medieval village? Or City + Alien conquest? Have a normal city theme, but the action features would show some "paranormal" activity going on, and could be easily hidden if you didn't like the Alien conquest theme. I think having themes "cross over" would have more interesting or inspired builds for LEGO city. Just my opinion.
@@sabremarky15 I too have always loved the airport subtheme, but it's a shame that Lego seems to place a greater emphasis on vehicle-related side builds than fleshing out an airport build beyond merely a façade. In the future I'd love to see a larger and more detailed airport, or a passenger plane with more than 5 seats. I recognize that many City sets are targeted at kids (many of whom like playing with smaller vehicles), but one can dream, no?
Davis I think the idea of incorporating another subtheme into the City line is fantastic. I know it’s not Lego’s usual style, but I think it could reinvigorate people’s interest in the theme. A personal note: I adore the fact that you mentioned Alien Conquest, it was actually one of my favorite themes back in the day. I would love to see them resurrect that theme one day.

Where in the world is there a "Main Square"? I've never heard of any real location with such a name, and it sounds oddly unnatural, almost as if someone tried to combine "Main Street" and "City Square". Why is this the 'main' square? Does it imply the existence of a secondary square? Many more squares? Is life just a game of Minecraft where every thing is a square?...
Finally! Somebody mentions the scratches on clear and trans parts. It's getting rediculous in some sets, especially with printed parts (eg. The razor crest).
Looking at the official LEGO person with a hearing aid and I'm like cool maybe a dude will get one soon so I can update my minifig. But also, is this the first mini with ears?

More and more sets available only in Lego store. What a shame. There is no lego store in my country :( despite we have Lego factory here. Excuses? Yes. 200 euro for set for 6 years old kids? No, you can buy 2 big sets for that price. I feel more and more that TLG is in its dark age.
I would get this set basically mostly for the train and the limo. Which says something to Legos designs on the actual main town hall. Im a pretty experienced Lego fam and I have a pretty big Lego city. I hope I don't sound like I'm showing off.
Definitely not Lego's strongest set especially at this price point....def would rather get Barracuda Bay....Jang - your videos are the best. Build on brother!
I got the razor crest set and one of the grey bricks used in the carbon freeze parts already had marks. Also found the three 1x1 black bricks with clips on the side used to hold the spring shooter shots were very hard to press together.
Fair review, context is relevant, and I see the City square sets as starter sets. They really need to improve the sticker quality (the HS school was also badly cut), and consider putting large transparent pieces in separate bags, or else figure out a way to remove the scratches. Lego should rethink their city theme and produce a larger series of small modular sets in the city style, so I can choose what to buy. A lot of people who would have bought some parts of this set will be put off by the price of the whole thing.
The content by itself looks great for kids. I know I would have loved that stuff when I was that age. But for me, the fact that they do a $200 LEGO exclusive set aimed at six year old kids instead of a couple of smaller sets is a strange decision to me - especially when the content isn't really centered around a larger build.
It’s as if they designed a bunch of small individual sets, realized they didn’t know what to do with them, then just smashed it all together for a rather ludicrous price.
? No hairpiece for the Mayor?? NOOO! that is a dumb step backward, Lego! Jang , like me, is a big fan of hairpieces for hatted/helmeted characters. The Mayor spends ALL his time in that corn thing? Or he's bald with a stud on his head? NO. You gave him a chair, Lego. How is he supposed to sit in it? HAIR. Do it. If i bought this at Lego Store, I'd demand a hairpiece of my selection from the BAM bin. Oh, and NO, Lego, you must not change out the transparent window plastic if it's inferior to its less scratchable predecessor. Sustainable and nontoxic is good, but we AFOLS never let Lego windows (which are expensive) get thrown out anywhere, no way. So focus on durability and keep them strong so we can hand them down for generations as one does. Great review Jang!
Jang always has issues with droid head printing and sticker cutting. Jang also gets most of the sets almost always as soon as they are available. I have a theory: Lego has issues with the quality of the first batches of sets they make, and they have no issue with shipping the parts that have misprints and mis-cuts (or at least, poor detection processes) . As time goes on, they fix the issues with prints and stickers.
I was quite disappointed when I looked at pictures of this set since the previous ‘city square’-esque sets were much better, but knowing the context of it being 6+ definitely makes me want to less critical. It’s nothing I’d be excited by, but that was never the goal.

Lego should rethink their city theme and produce a larger series of small modular sets in the city style, so I can choose what to buy. A lot of people who would have bought some parts of this set will be put off by the price of the whole thing.
Nice!
The top of the city hall was clearly designed by Tommy Wiseau.
Bro hope sitting up to review this long didn’t hurt too much, keep pacing yourself!
I've been wondering about why my trabsparent pieces have scratches on them for ages. Nice to finally know.
Finally, now my brother can get duke with short sleeves
Billy & Madison. Yeah i gotta watch this show. lol
The content by itself looks great for kids. I know I would have loved that stuff when I was that age. But for me, the fact that they do a $200 LEGO exclusive set aimed at six year old kids instead of a couple of smaller sets is a strange decision to me - especially when the content isn't really centered around a larger build.
Can you pleas tell me we’re you got your 9volt tracks because I also wante to build my on Lego city
No set designed for 6 year olds should be priced at $200.
Amazing video
When I first saw the box I called Lego out for false advertising, in my eyes that is what I see.
Cool!
I really like that you made the excuses and stuff and kept emphasising that it's a kids set
It’s as if they designed a bunch of small individual sets, realized they didn’t know what to do with them, then just smashed it all together for a rather ludicrous price.
the town hall looks like taken straight from the 4+ set
That's why my Avengers tower windows were scratched out of the box! I really hate that.
Great Vids Jangbricks
Im gonna buy that set That set is really cool
city is just gotten funky
As time goes on, they fix the issues with prints and stickers.
i havnt checked lego citys updates since last year and it is crazy.
The limo looks like the one from 3222
Yep just different color exact same thing you would think they would modernize or spruce it up
Is this limo the same build as the white one from the Airport VIP Service set?
I was quite disappointed when I looked at pictures of this set since the previous ‘city square’-esque sets were much better, but knowing the context of it being 6+ definitely makes me want to less critical. It’s nothing I’d be excited by, but that was never the goal.
