  • The Jaguar XK engine is an amazing piece of British engineering. The design has stood the test of time. There are very few weak spots, but in this video we look at one that I personally had to overcome. The number 1 cylinder in my E Type was trashed by a loose intake tappet guide.

You said this damage was caused by pieces of the tappet guide or cam (both external and not within the cylinder or combustion chamber) , NO WAY THAT CAN HAPPEN. Super SMALL fragments of the tappet guide or cam MAY pass down to the oil pan, but the oil filter will stop those before going thru the lubrication system, and those pieces would not get into the oil galleys by any means or into the combustion chambers. ANY fragments that made this type damage WOULD HAVE TO ENTER THRU THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, THEN GET PASS THE INTAKE VALVES , OR GET PASS THE VALVE GUIDES WHICH WOULD BE AN EXTREMELY REMOTE CHANCE AND WOULD HAVE TO BE MICROSCOPIC IN SIZE. What happened here to create those impact marks and gouges were most likely caused by broken valve heads , or broken or loose valve seats, broken spark plugs, cracked combustion chambers or possibly a broken piston ring, or running the engine without the air filter attached to the carbs, or simply a sloppy engine rebuild. Installing tappet hold down kits help , but something else caused this damage. My car : '66 SERIES ONE COUPE rebuild my me, running fine.

You make a very reasonable explanation. Probably more accurate than my explanation. However the damage occurred, I did a good quality rebuild that has been running well for 12 years. Thank you for your comment.

I will point out that the intake valve and seat were also very damaged. There was only one tappet guide damaged, and one piston: both number 1 cylinder. Thanks for your comments. Can't wait for my car to come home from it's paint job.

Totally concur. My 3d exhaust guide drifted up and chipped a bit off. Now need to yank it out and replace!😢

@@maxazevedo5438 I put the hold down pieces on both intake and exhaust. Sorry for your troubles, thank you for your comments.

Intake is very unlikely. The hot exhaust is likely the contributor to higher temperatures. My engine didn’t even get any road time, just a few starters over a rebuild almost 40 years ago 😂.
