Woodturning - Log into big vase | White Oak end grain turning.

  • I got some nice pieces of white oak. I wanted to seal the end grain to let them dry. To give it a try, I already turned one of these pieces into a end grain vase or vessel and hollowed it out to speed up the drying proces. I was also curious if the warping and cracking of the wood would be less if the pith is hollowd out.
    I started this project at the end of December and finished it in recent days. In between I let it dry with the opening facing down. It seems that my trial is going well and that this vase is going to stay intact.
    As a sealer I used water-based polyurethane. I saw this idea with Gary (Thepapa1947). He showed that the wood then becomes less yellowish, compared to sanding sealers, oil and waxes.
    I applied three coats and sanded in between. Finally, I finished the vase on a high gloss with Chestnut "Cut 'n polish" and "Microcrystalline Wax".
    This vase is 10 inches (25cm) high and hollowed out almost 9 inches (22,5 cm). I couldn't go deeper because I don't have tools for that. The somewhat thicker bottom makes the vase nice and heavy and stable.
    I would love to hear what you think of this vase and if you have any ideas on how to do the hollowing out better. Suggestions and feedback are more than welcome.

      Very nice that you compliment me on a wood turning project that took me less than 10 minutes of working time🙏😁
      I also enjoy watching other things in people's workshops in videos. A bit of voyeur and looking at what is on the workbench or on the tool board.

      Hi Gary, is it a UV blocker that prevents yellowing or preventing the wood from oxidizing? I have some Osage orange turnings that I want to stay yellow? Keep well, Rob

    Nice looking vase, I haven’t managed to finish one yet. I also ran out of hollowing tool before the wood ran out so I made one, then decided to wait for the wood to dry before trying resin on it again. I like watching your videos btw. Keep well, Rob.

      Thanks Mike! I would say in this case; nothing ventured nothing gained. I put the forstner bit extension on my wish list. Thanks for the tip. But I also need a longer hollowing tool for the walls inside. 🤔 I have to look into that.

    I could say that was the biggest log You ever put on the lathe, am I right? Hollowing that big vase took a lot of time I suppose. Looks very good inside and the outside is very smooth as for oak. Beautiful work, Frank 👌

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Rav. Yes, this was the biggest log I ever turned. Hollowing was a slow job and a bit dangerous. It's not 100% but I'm very pleased with this result. I'm also very happy with the smooth finish. That was a good tip from Gary. I'm going to use this method more often now.
      Thanks for watching my friend 🙏

    Beautifully done, Frank! The vase is stunning. Excellent videography, too. I am looking to upgrade my lathe and am looking at the Record Power Coronet Herald. Pros and cons from your perspective? Thanks!

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  3 года назад

      Thanks Greg. I'm very positive about this lathe. It's great quality for this money. Size was very important to me. The swivel head is also a big advantage because my lathe is close to a wall, which gives me more freedom of chisel movement. The only disadvantage so far is that with heavy work, such as this large piece of wood, the chisel vibrations resonate a bit in the metal legs. I still want to fill the legs with sand this summer. That makes the lathe heavier, even more stable and hopefully also more silent during the big work. That is actually the only thing I can think of as a disadvantage. But that is certainly NOT a problem, but an observation. If you have more questions you can always send an email to me. Good luck.

      @@TheTinyWorkshop Thanks, Frank, for taking the time to respond so thoughtfully. Have you noticed any issue with it being a 1HP motor?

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  3 года назад

      @@felocarp Not a moment! I have been turning on the middle motor pulley from day one. Until now I can work fine with this RPM (140-1850). If necessary, I can still go to the smallest motor pulley (95-1050) if I need more power, but that has not been necessary yet.

    That looks great Frank! Especially the finish is great. It must have been a time consuming job.
    I'm using that same laquer also, comes from Action. Did you know they also have it in a spraycan?
    And regarding the deep hollowing, the 20-25cm range seems to be a hard limit. Recently found I cannot get any deeper either.
    But an overhang of 20cm means a handle length of about one meter. My tools are not even half that long!
    Maybe one day I will make a special tool for that but it won't be very ergonomic to use.

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Leo. Is the spraycan from Action also water based?
      You can of course make a handle of almost a meter long yourself. Oh wait🤔, you made a clock out of a piece of wood that was suitable for that handle🤣. I'll keep another piece for you😉. I don't know exactly how long my handle is, but I do know it was an exciting job. I took it very slowly and because the wood was still green, it went pretty well.

    • @emgiwoodworks
      @emgiwoodworks 3 года назад +1

      @@TheTinyWorkshop Water based? I believe it is.
      And I'd be happy to pick another of those table legs if you have no other purpose for them.
      Not sure if I'd make a handle from it but it is pretty stable wood, good for many things.

    • @TheTinyWorkshop
      @TheTinyWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      @@emgiwoodworks After all that beautiful wood I got from you, I am able to saw the legs from under my own dining table🤗. It is often good wood that comes from old furniture. When someone offers me something, I never say no. I will have a look at the Action website for that spraycan.
