- One of the biggest issues in the captive management of tortoises is understanding what they need to eat and how they should eat it. Variety is of course key but grazing behavior is something tortoises should never be denied. Think of them as shelled cows! They need to move and eat and they must be able to do it whenever they want. Pick up on some great tortoise feeding tips right here, right now.

Dixie looks like she's smiling when you pick her up. 🐢😄I have 1 question ; are there 2 different species of Sulcata ? Because I've seen some with a rounder carapace and the scoots are a deep brown and beige color.
They look like little dinosaurs. Educational video, as always!
Thank you 🙏🏻
So glad these guys are doing so well. You are can tell, they are well-cared for.
Thank you!
I simply cannot express how happy your animals seem to become when living outside in their enclosures hits high gear. They get running, and eating…somewhere between a dance and a rugby game.🖤🇨🇦
Happy to know you’ve noticed that 😌
@@GardenStateTortoise How could you ever miss it.🖤🇨🇦
You are a life saver.

I just love the animal ❤
My Russian tortoise adored strawberry leaves! If I get another tort I'd definitely be using garden boxes to grow more strawberries. I'll eat the fruit, and the tort can have the leaves!
I always watch these for my Sulcata!

I leave large soup bones in my tortoise enclosure for them to gnaw on. Lots of calcium and trims their beaks
You should make a video on turtle diet made simple
❤❤🐢🐢🐢🐢
🐢❤️
Dude my Egyptian tortoise got a little cut in it's back leg after some days the cut is healed but the same leg is swollen
Might be good to have an x-ray done on the leg or check for internal infection. Or, best case scenario the swelling goes down on its own.
@@GardenStateTortoise thanks for help
One of my tortoises spent a long time gnawing on a dog bone picking off the little bits of flesh. I stayed with him to make sure the bone didn't splinter but when I've asked about tortoises picking on bones I've been met with a total blank. This is the first time I've heard of this. He clearly enjoyed it. Should I get him the odd small bone?
Hi your videos are really helpful. I am from canada and I have russian tortoise as winter is comming i am worried about food. Can you give a little advice on how should i get food for tortoise. It would be great. Thank you
Where do you order your greens from? We have some Redfoots and Leopards that LOVE dandelion but those only grow here (Iowa) in the spring.
I have a question, is okay if the tortoises sometimes eat the sand and dirt that are on the leaf? because many times when i give my tortoises some leaves, they get a little bit dirty because of the ground
Yes that’s ok as long as they aren’t constantly consuming large amounts of it.
@@GardenStateTortoise Our tortoise will sometimes just eat straight grains of sand or dirt from the ground... It's not out of hunger, he's well fed, and I don't think it's from lack of calcium, because he has a cuttlebone in his enclosure and he nibbles on it from time to time. Why could he be doing that?
Do you know for sure whether your tortoise is a male? And what speciem is he (Hermanns, radiated, etc)? Eating large amounts of sand can cause an intestinal obstruction. If he doesn't eat enough of the cuttlebone, try algal lime, my tortoises prefer it. Just put some in a flat bowl.
If your tortoise doesn't stop eating sand, I would change the substrate (again, depending on what speciem he is). English is not my first language, so I hope you understand everything.
*algae lime
@@wewe-pc9vn It's Hermanns tortoise and when we got it we were told it was a male, but it's still only less than 2 years old so we're not like 100% sure.
do you throw the same to redfoots as well? or is it more of fruit for them?
Love turtles. I have several box turtles on my property who are pretty friendly. Freedom comes to my office door most days and waits for me to come out and greet him. He has this re occurring nasty cyst on the side of his face that comes and goes. I did a little research the first year and it said it's due to moist conditions(which I have) or Lack of Vitamin A. I started feeding him a little mango to see if it would help. Any suggestions?
Hi can tortoises eat photinia leaves.? Thanks so much
How often are you feeding them? I have recently adopted a couple of Mojave Desert tortoise and I'm still trying to gauge how much and how often to feed.
They graze on enclosure edibles every day and we supplement that twice weekly with these greens.
I have a question, I have a Russian Tortoise who refuses to eat leafy greens. I have tried giving him a variety of things but the only things he eats are zucchini and dandelions(flower, leaf and stems) when available. Is there anything you suggest I try to feed him? and is it normal for a tortoise to have preferences that differ from the majority of the species? I want him to have a variety of things and get all the nutrients he needs but he seems very picky.
I'm getting attached to your buddies 🐢💛🐢💛🐢💛🐢💛🐢
How often do you feed them?
They graze every day on their own and are fed these greens once or twice a week.
du you have the reeves turtle?
Yes we do
@@GardenStateTortoise wow! I live in Denmark and I have 3 reeves turtles and 4 musk turtles! I'm scared to see what is gonna happen to them when they are under ice!!!
How much should I feed my Hermann tortoise? Sometimes they eat twice the size of the shell and sometimes not even half. She never even touch my cattlefish bone, so very strange.
So is tortoise grass bad for your tortoise to have in the enclosure?
Now, I'm hungry for a salad. :)
