tbh i expected luigi and mario to be able to move independently and don't have to follow each other outside of battles, but that would probably be almost impossible to mod in

There are hammer moves that can seperate the bros so you can already escape Luigi but, you can’t go back playing as Luigi, superstar saga did something better though, so it’s probably just a matter of coding that the mode of being seperate is always active

He goes toe to toe with Bowser as a giant in the dream world and fights alongside Mario to defeat him in basically a godlike state in the real world, Bowser even starts calling Luigi by his actual name from now on, seeing him as a genuine threat now. ...Naturally, because Paper Jam ruins everything, in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, the world acts as if this never happened and gets back to treating Luigi like a tool.

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga actually was a multiplayer game. If you used the Gameboy Player on the Gamecube, you were able to control Mario and Luigi with 2 separate controllers. Was it efficient? Probably not but it was very fun!
