- In this video we're checking out Marillion. All we know is this band was named after a Tolkien novel. This should be interesting. Enjoy!

This song is a tragic conclusion to a very emotionally heavy concept album. A girl jumps off a bridge to her death. They decided to have an alternate ending on the LP that was a happy song of the girl being saved at the end instead. Many of Marillion's songs are like movie soundtracks. They tell stories with "tone poems". This is indeed a very good band who sound even better live. Steve Hogarth, the vocalist puts his whole being into every song. Yes, their guitarist Steve Rothery is a master of his craft. One of the best melodic prog-style players. Their song "Easter" is a great example. It has one of the most beautiful solos in it. And they're still doing it after 40 years!
One of the greatest bands of all time.
A bit of back history. Marillion were formed in 1979 in Aylesbury, UK. They had some commercial success in the 80's with their first singer, but have been pretty much ignored by mainstream media since. They are the band that invented Crowdfunding and were the first band to have their own website. Far from fading away, they have an incredibly loyal global fanbase and, in 2017, sold out the famous Royal Albert Hall in 4 minutes. They have just released their 20th studio album which contains probably the best track they've ever recorded, Care (linked below). The studio versions of their songs are great, but, in order to really appreciate them, you need to watch the live recordings. On stage, this band are on a totally different planet.
May I suggest you find live versions of Neverland, Go (from the Royal Albert Hall) or Estonia, before attempting the more heavyweight tracks like This Strange Engine, The Invisible Man, Gaza, always go for the live versions too.
Marillion are an incredible White Rabbit Hole, that, once you start down, you really won't want to come out of

One of the best bands..for sure the most underrated band
Marillion are a superb Prog Rock band. Very much influenced by Genesis. The song is about a girl contemplating suicide, she is standing on the bridge about to take 'The Great Escape' to end her life, it's just so sad. The melody is beautiful and lyrics so poignant, she says when they are trying to talk her down 'don't ask me why I'm doing this you wouldn't understand, your asking the wrong questions you couldn't understand, A bridge is not a high place. the 52nd floor, Icarus would know a mountain isn't far to fall, when you've fallen, when you've fallen from the moon'. Icarus of course flew too close to the sun and his wings melted and he fell to earth. She is explaining how far she has fallen, and there is no way back. The water at the end is of course her drowning as water is the last thing she hears. An incredibly sad song but absolutely brilliant. In the middle part of the song Steve Hogarth sings, and she says' why did you hurt the very one that you should have protected', a possible link to here to the girl being abused as a child, and how this affected her life and driven her to this suicide. A brilliant song.
I've known of them for a long time. I had a conversation with a Greek-Australian woman I worked with, and she was telling me of her husband's frustrations with Australia. One of his complaints is that nobody had heard of Marillion. Apparently, they really are something in Europe!
That reminds me of my own disappointment of hardly anyone having even heard of Rush in NZ! And yes, Marillion have definitely always had a massive fan base in Germany, where I'd grown up 🙂
@@mightyV444 It's strange that those acts are not known in Oz and in your case, NZ. I've seen videos by both bands played on our music shows, but radio have barely touched... Strangely enough, ''Spirit Of The Radio'' was the first track played on the launch of Australian FM station Triple M.
@@OnceWasRStrathfield - Maybe their music is just too airy-fairy to the general public of our countries?! And in Rush's case, I can also imagine that Geddy Lee's voice puts most people off; Just like it has always done whenever I'd introduced them to NZ'ers, including my own friends! 😅 They do every once in a blue moon play Rush on Rock radio here, though. And on one of those occasions, I was at work (in a noisy print room) when 'Tom Sawyer' was blasting at me at Volume 11 and with Bass on full, and I was just standing there, realising, "What the eff am I doing here?? THIS is what I *really* am meant to be doing!", meaning Music and being a musician. And good on TripleM to choose 'The Spirit Of Radio' as their first song to play ever! 😁👍
@@mightyV444 I think the ''air-fairy'' might be the issue Aussies have with both bands, but that's a wild guess.
It's not hard to find Rush records/CD's in Australia. They have some presence. I had access to tapes of an old music TV show called Nightmoves in the 70's, and some of these shows played Rush vids from that time period. So, they were tried and tested. I've seen their videos played on Rage too. It was a pretty big thing when Triple M was launched in Sydney, as it was Australia entering into the FM age, and ''Spirit Of The Radio'' being the first song that played on the station is pretty big. Now Triple M is a nationa wide station with Nickleback and Foo Fighters all day.
@@OnceWasRStrathfield - Yes, it's not hard to find Rush albums here in NZ either, and I do have two or three friends who'd known and liked them already before I met them, and of course it's well possible that Rush had been tried and tested also here, but that would've then been before my move to NZ 20 years ago. I don't know about Australia, but I'm pretty sure Rush had also never toured NZ, which may also play some part in their unpopularity. Then again, they've always had a solid fan base in Germany but still didn't get much airplay there either! Maybe they simply just didn't fit in with the media's formats!? But they still had at some point been the 3rd-biggest album seller after the Beatles and the Stones, which to me truly is quite a phenomenon 😀
Marillion are one of the best bands it the world with a 40+ year history of amazing music. I hope you enjoyed it and will cover more of them in the future :)
Ocean Cloud is my favourite ong by Marillion.
What a band and what a masterpiece!!!
Album come out 7th of February 1994 it's a brilliant album by Marillion🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
This band has been the soundtrack to my life for over 30 years! You've got to listen to their live material - the music comes even more alive...
guys, thanks for reacting to the song. Just look at your take again and your emotional reaction. Marillion is one kind of these bands and musicians who actually string a direct line into your heart, musically and lyrically. That song did it at least for one of you ;)
To appreciate this track and the album in its entirety you have to know that its a concept album covering some pretty heavy real life content. So its a difficult song to pigeon hole without having the back story knowledge. The album is definitely not commercial but definitely is a masterpiece!
Old and new Marillion are amazing.
Best Prog Albums from 1994: 1.- Brave (Marillion) 2.- División Bell (Pink Floyd) 3.- All the Others...
You have to listen to the whole album.. The album tells a story.
Nice reaction 👍🏻
I recommend:
Neverland (live 2009) ❤️🧚
Gaza (live) ☮️
Power (live) 💪
Somewhere else (live) 💔
Should I continue...? 😏
Agree - and if you're going to react to "Power", you should watch the live performance of it here - ruclips.net/video/OPLW8QhuPRA/видео.html - it's astonishing!
Great album, brilliant band. Their first album came out in 1983 with a different singer called Fish who left in 1987 after four albums to be replaced by the current singer Steve Hogarth in 1989. Pretty much a neo prog band influenced by Pink Floyd, as you correctly picked up, and Genesis. They've done some brilliant work over the years, including their latest album (they've produced 20 albums) released this year. Some fans prefer the Fish era, which is more proggy and Genesis-like, whereas others prefer Hogarth; but I appreciate them both and how they've evolved over the years.
There was a movie, produced by the band that went with this. It was very heavy, and was inspired by a true story. This would have been a very different reaction video, and would have given you understanding. The water at the end was the girl lying dead, washed up on the shore, after she threw herself off the bridge.
Great band I'm more into former singer "Fish" era of the band 1981 to 88 .Kayleigh being there biggest hit in UK no2 very emotional song heartbreaking very worth discovering that period ,little similar to Genesis .Steve Hogarth as an incredible voice. Like this 👌 I must listen more to Hogarth era but for me" fish" era first 4 albums FANTASTIC
best band ever
This penultimate track of the album is such an emotional piece within the context of the arc of the story the album..it gets me everytime 😭.. its a beautiful pain in the depths of me it brings to the surface.. fantastic Marillion and Rotherys guitar at their emotional best 👌
Your Pink Floyd analogy is pretty much right. Both bands did a few concept albums
For me it's a gut-wrenching and transcendent climax to the most powerful concept album I know. I can't imagine it would mean much to someone just hearing it in isolation. I don't know why commentators feel the need to reveal the details of the story of the album. Why deprive people of the pleasure of finding out for themselves? That's like giving away the plot and ending of a book or film. Spoilers.
Marillion is amazing band!
should see a live version of this song... amazing
I think it's a great track, but that's with many years hindsight. For me Marillion were always fronted by Fish and they peaked with the album 'Misplaced Childhood', so when he left the band my interest faded. As a result I never even listened to this later stuff with Steve Hogarth on vocals until pretty recently - my loss I suspect!
Sugarmice is another great song by marillion
Marillion, an amazing band but unfortunately very niche.
Whilst this is a worthy tune and Hogarth is a really good singer, the original songs with Fish are very different. Fish's lyrics coupled with his deliveries are far more compelling and true to life. Their debut album is untouchable prog and appeals to non prog fans. Any song from it is worthy of review, but to choose one song - Forgotten Sons. I remember seeing them on the Script tour and Fish"s performance was incredible during this song.
Love Marillion!
Marillion, just say no kids!
