    TIP: When removing cracked glass screens from any device you value first apply a layer of sticky tape to over the cracked surface. This gives support to the glass while you take it out and holds small shards in place. If removing glass by vertically lifting then fashion some pull tabs out of the same tape.

    This video is great! Thank you very much for doing it!! .It allows many people interested in acquiring the Kronos to know the interesting details of its construction that are shown, such as the motherboard, processor, SSD disk (and the connectors to add another one), and so much more. There is a detail that caught my attention (negatively for a keyboard of 3500 dollars): what need had Korg to use a wooden bottom cover ??? (I ask you to tell me the approximate weight, which should not be little ...). At least, they would have painted it black! . The sensation of beauty of seeing the wood on its sides is transformed into horror when you see it below without painting .... I find this cheap construction detail very strange .... The day I buy it, I will also buy a quarter liter of black paint! LOL

      At least there where very big stickers from yamaha last year @ "musikmesse" frankfurt as they had a anniversary last year. The biggest one where about 50cm by 20cm black with white yamaha logo and the usual trademark.
      And this year a reprint of these old orange "roland" (trademark and logo) stickers, but only small, A4 letter size wide and about 6cm high. But better these than nothing....

    Excellent video! Those Korg 88 note workstations are loaded up with so many components that all have to come off before one can get to the touch screen. I've had to do this on my Korg Trinity proX 88 note, Korg 01W 61 note as well. The screens are buried beneath all this circuitry and wiring..... much fun.I've needed to work on older Yamaha GHS keyboards that have keybed issues. What lubricant would you recommend on those for rear of key and front guides?Thanks

    Hi Mark, great job as usual.
    My kronos has a slighly different problem: the screen is not broken but there is a line of pixels which remain always lit (that is:quite annoying).The strange thing is that the brightness of this line of pixel is not always the same: i.e, at the start, in the first part of the booting sequence, it is brighter, then it grows dim
    Do you have any suggestions? In case the replacent is needed, where can I find the LCD screen spare part?
    Thank you in advance for any help

    Interesting. Though I wished 2 know, how the screen connector could b opened. Also there are PCI SSD's that also fits in the main board's (Mobile type PCI) slot, that you pointed for wireless LAN. The board above the screen is basically the Heart of the Kronos. It contains a RISC CPU and does the most, of the OS. It works as a plugin board on a Linux based OS where the desktop CPU is used for creating the sounds. Tx. Namasté.

    Hello Markus, thanks for the vid, great step by step on how to do this. I'm needing to do the same repair, and the one thing I didn't get from this video is: What was the material/tape that you used to RE-apply the glass to the LCD?

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  8 лет назад

      Hello Jonny. I used standard 3M double sided tape, the sort that is sticky on one side then you pull off the backing strip and that makes it sticky both sides. I had to cut it into thin strips though as the original tape is 1 inch wide. but luckily it did the job :-) . many thanks from markus

      A couple more questions about the tape. What is the heat (temperature) setting on your heat gun? Do I need to be concerned that it will damage the LCD screen itself? (I noted that you heat sinked the cable going to it with foil tape, but do I need to be concerned about the LCD Screen itself?) As you can see, this is the only part that concerns me. The rest is just "screwdriver" stuff... :-)

    Good eveninig Mark. After owning for 7 years a Korg Kronos-X 88 (Sh3 keybed...) I discovered the velocity curve problem (any curve programed by Korg is not able to reachthe value 127), this involves many other considerations regarding the olayablility of this type of keybed... Do you know if the problem can be solved by chabging rubber pink contacts inside by other contacts achieving better results?..... We have in Spain a big Kronos community waiting for a solution of this issue... Thanks a lot for your advice. François Clamour from Barcelona.

    Jus wanted to know if you can know a way to reset the touch screen to its original state, instead of using the touch-screen calibration option available on the KRONOS. Please help me................

      Hello Studio Manmusic. I would have to spend some time with the Kronosx88 and if all seems to work ok then it would be OK. you do have a 1 year warranty with Korg so if something starts to go wrong then send it back and describe how it was delivered. The Kronos is quite a tough built machine and the packaging is designed with tests to ensure some small errors in transport will not affect the Kronos. check all keys respond correctly. but the electronics is fitted well inside the Kronos so if it works now it should not be a problem in the near future. but always there is a 1 year guarantee if you need it. My best wishes and I hope you have no problem as this is a very good machine to own. many thanks from Markus

    Good video brother, I have a pink line over the display do you reckon is the screen or mainboard problem

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  3 года назад

      sometimes if you have a coloured line that goes right across the screen then its normally a display issue that could be the tiny fine ribbon connector that attaches to the edge of the glass lcd panel. this can also sometimes be fixed by a bit of gentle pressure added to the ribbon cable just where it meets the glass but it is so fragile that you can also make matters worse. I dont think the problem is from the mainboard. Its a pity Korg didnt utilise the display adaptor on the atom pc within the keyboard as you could have plugged in with a computer monitor and tested to see if you have a clear display or if the line appeared on a computer monitor. I do not think that display port on the mainboard is activaed though I could be wrong.

    Have just been looking at a second hand Kronos 2 61, turned out the touch screen wasn't actually working did not detect any finger or nail presses on the screen whatsoever, could not get to the menus to re calibrate the screen either, had to drive home empty handed, seller wasn't aware of the problem hadn't used it for a while then took out the box so I could have a look at it, Markus do you think this could be just a touch screen problem that replacing the screen will fix, or are there other issues that could be causing the Touch screen issue?

    Markus, this is a wonderful video... wanted to ask you about the fan noise (the only reason I haven't purchased a Kronos). Do you know if the only purpose is to cool the atom processor/mother board? I was hoping to create a fanless Frankenstein Kronos so that I could have a silent Kronos. Thanks, David

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  10 лет назад +1

      Hi David. it looks as though the fan is just blowing across the PC so I guess it could live without one if you placed some good heatsinks on the processor. some fans are noisier than others in the Kronos. mine is not too bad really.

    • @davidnaggar
      @davidnaggar 10 лет назад

      markusfuller
      Thanks Markus. That's helpful. I wonder if Korg tested installing heatsink rather than using a fan to cool the Atom. HP and others now make fanless Haswell PCs. If there was a way to use a Haswell PC in the Kronos, rather than the Atom, the fan could simply be eliminated (in theory). Do you think it would be possible to swap out the Atom?

    Korg used to make quite beautiful product such as the M1, T-series, and Wavestation. A $100 Intel Atom PC inside is not exactly the most impressive thing in the world.

    • @Alxasaurus
      @Alxasaurus 8 лет назад

      Quite embarrassing, even. Since the OASYS was quite a beast with 2.8 GHz Pentium back then. Korg needs a lot more CPU power than an Atom to make it a flagship instrument.

    • @dvamateur
      @dvamateur 8 лет назад +1

      It is a con. Even putting a high end Intel in it just to support Linux kernel, it's a round way to go to make audio product. Looks like times of elegant and true engineering through dedicated DSP chips like the Motorola 56000 in the Nord Lead 2 back in 1997, those times are gone... I am only scared to think of what's inside the Montage (Motif used Linux as well) or Integra-7. I understand that digital technology is just bits, but I feel more comfortable with dedicated musical hardware instead of going around to use multi purpose consumer components. So we no longer use dedicated DSP chips, only FPGA and mainstream PC CPU's to run musical hardware on? If so, it doesn't make Nagra battery con look as bad as I thought it was, compared with what Korg is doing here :) Sure, Yamaha charges a lot of money for their RAM boards, but if that's dedicated chips, I am fine with it. Korg has advantage to most because upgrading memory is cheap. Still, I think using Intel Atom in "high-end" professional instrument is a con. God, I've done some research on the likes of LVMH, Rolex, Apple... Now I see Nagra and Korg joining the ranks. But hey, if it's all legal, maybe it would be better (and healthier) not to know the things behind the scenes. Nonetheless, it's a real eye opener this RUclips channel.

      Hi Andrew. I recently repaired a fairly expensive guitar foot pedal for a friend and it only contained one Arm cortex chip and a few other cheap components. I guess the cost was the development and programming.

      Well, there was an interview with Eric Persing about that on sonicstate (who would love to have you on the show, too, by the way), and he said that there's no market for rackmounts of this type. Eric Persing agrees that such solution would be better, but hardly anyone would be willing to pay for an Omnisphere in a rackmount module.

      markusfuller Ok can we have a review in a couple of weeks when you know the keyboard at bit better? Only joking, if you have time and only if you wish to. I'm intrigued about some of the features that the newer gear has to offer and how easy it is to use. I guess I could go down to local music shop, but playing with a bit of gear for 10mins is not the same as owning it. I'm also curious how you go about composing/producing music.

      alphasxsignal - nope🤷‍♂️. It would be giant to hold that 9” display, or they would have to totally redesign the software for a smaller display. Roland already had the Fantom XR rack, which is most of what’s in the Integra-7.

    People complaining about a cheap PC inside: Consider that you're paying for the development and capabilities of the product, not the value of the hardware. I'm sure Korg want to spend the minimum amount while still staying "ahead" of their competition.

    ........“That’s extremely fragile....until we get it inside there”........
    Meanwhile, all electronic engineers, technicians and Lucy at Korg UK, watches in horror as the delicate glass panel is suspended in the air by its even more delicate glass bonded ribbon connector.
    I’ve repaired dozens of keyboards and workstations over the years and must say that the Korg flagship is built like a battleship. Armour plated and bulletproof. Breaking the digitiser screen was unfortunate for you.

    Hello Dear Marcus, I have a korg kronos x 73 and when I'm perfoming in setlist mode.. and I change one sound to another.. the next one put detuned.. and when I change and go back... this sounds normal. Could be a memory problem, what do you think?. by the way its wonderful that you show wich hardware use korg kronos !. thanks !!!

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  7 лет назад

      Hello David. I do not know why you are having this problem as I have never had that happen to me (yet) . have you checked if the sound you are switching to has not got a key change ie I think you can set up pitch change on for the different setlist controls. maybe you could check the instrument being used that has this problem and adjust the pitch then save to setlist. I know you can do this but i am not sure exactly how as i do not have my kronos here with me to look for you.

Marcus one last question.. you know that also happened somethis strange in setlist mode.. I'm play a song.. and in one moment the sound no stop even after realease the keys, like a pc crash. 2 minutes boot? With an SSD? That's really long. Although I would assume that it scans the disc contents somehow and/or loads the patch in that time, not just starts the OS...

    Hello. Know if you can connect a monitor to the Korg Kronos in the VGA output on the motherboard?

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  9 лет назад

      Hi Juan, I think if you connect an external VGA monitor you would also have to gain access to the Bios of the motherboard to switch on the VGA output and maybe get into the startup program of the Kronos. to be honest I think it could be a lot of work to get it to display on a VGA but I am going to have a look around the internet to see if anyone has succeeded in doing so. you have bought up a good question here. . . does anyone else reading this know if it can be done ? please reply if it can. best wishes from markus

    my keyboards keys have turned yellow

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  8 лет назад

      +Matthew Garufi Of Audio Fix Productions Hello Matthew, This is something I have never done but I have heard that the yellowing is caused by Bromine seeping out of the plastic and that you can clean it with vinegar then a damp soapy cloth to neutralise the acid and then leave it in the sun for a day to re-bleach the plastic with UV light. As I must say though I have never tried this myself so cannot give you my advice on wether this actually works. Best thing is look around the new to see if someone has already done this. Best wishes from Markus.

    • @Krytom42
      @Krytom42 8 лет назад

      +Matthew Garufi Of Audio Fix Productions I saw a guide somewhere that said using hydrogen peroxide and UV light is the way to fix yellowed plastic. There are some hair products that contain H2O2 and are foamy for easy application. For UV, use a blacklight or sunlight.
      I haven't tried it myself yet, but am tempted as my NZXT PC case has caught a bit too much sun.

    Isn't it so that some of Korg proprietary chips are build in that motherboard these chips make up for the many effects and dsp routing and other enhanced improved audio synth capability then was in the Korg Oasys.

      I wish i had stripped it down further as I guess there would be some interesting DSPs etc on the other sides of those boards. the PC does not do all that magic itself.

    Hi Markus ! I have a problem with my Kronos x.. A problem has been detected. Please turn the Kronos off, wait for a 10 sec, and then turn it back on. any advice? thanks !!

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  4 года назад

      Hi David I guess you have already tried turning it off then on again ?. the Kronos is a small household type atom computer (even has a printer port on the board). so the problem could be coming from anywhere as in a fault with the hard drive or memory or boot-up or or anything else that a computer can suffer from, plus there are several special boards connecting to the PC with soundcards and faders & buttons etc all communicating with the main PC. There could be a problem with one of those boards. I would try the reset procedure a few times and maybe look to see if there is a factory reset procedure which would normally involve pressing a button and holding while powering on (should be in the instruction manual somewhere). I sold my Kronos a long time ago so I do not know what the full reset procedure is. Factory resetting the Kronos will not guarantee that everything will be back to normal if there is a fault within the computer but it is better to try that first rather than taking things apart. and the fact that it says please turn the Kronos off on the screen tells me some of the program must be running correctly inside the PC simply because it is displaying the word Kronos. but I do not have any idea what could be wrong with it as you are the first person in all these years that has asked me that specific question. there is a Korg Forums page that could be more helpful as the people on there have had their kronos’s for years. good luck I hope you get it up and running again.

    • @Davidjzmusic

      hI !! yes I did it a few times and its strange because for example yesterday in the first start I have that error and after reboot maybe 3 times the Kronos works fine, but I guess is what you told me.. its a computer so I shoud start to check my Kronos in that way. Thank you very much to take the time for reply to me. take care !!

      +Helge Bjastad Hello if there is any warranty then get it serviced by korg. if it is out of warrenty then it may be just a case of lifting out the keyboard and checking the carbon pads under the keys though that can be a long and fiddly job to do and may not be the problem, just letting you know as i have spent days on jobs like this in the past.

      Hello Helge, I cannot really say that buying a new cable will fix your problem. If the cable is faulty then yes change it but I cannot tell you that is the best thing to do as I do not know the problem on your Krome. I hope you get it fixed it is a nice keyboard.

    • @mrdali67
      @mrdali67 7 лет назад

      You can, but its not for beginners.
      The thing is the Linux kernel used is special developed to be used with strict timing control.
      There is a site on the net where they post a hack of the software so it will accept "certain" mobo's that is compatible with Korgs, wich means it has to use certain chipsets for various things to function.
      They have managed to get certain Mobo's with an i5 to run and start up. You can theoretically get more polyphonics this way. You can get more memory etc. but the system software is 32bit !!!!!! come on Korg !!
      So it can only make use of 3.2 Gb RAM. Anyway go check it out and search for Kronos hack if you have the guts to play with a 3000£ Hardware :)
      But shitty Atom Board or not ... Kronos is still one of the best workstations you can buy
