My son was in the RAF and left about eight years ago, he said it will take over thirty years to bring the air force back to anything like what it once was. "Citizen Army" conjures up images of men and women in civilian clothes, Army helmet, with a broomstick instead of a rifle.

The Houthi pirates attacked the Marlin Luanda. This tanker is registered as being Oceonix Services Ltd, a UK registered company. It seems like the Houthi (Iranian) pirates started this with the aim of shutting down the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea which is how this British ship and others get to the Suez Canal and how the UK gets all of it's oil and petroleum products from the Middle East. Coincidentally, it's also the route about 85% of the UK's cargo is shipped from India, China and the far east.
This shipping route is not as important to the US (as it is energy self-sufficient and accesses the far east across the Pacific) as it is to the UK. Strangely enough, the naval assets trying to keep that critical (to the UK) sea lane open are almost all from the US (I think the UK has one warship deployed there) including, recently, as many as two super carriers and all their escourts.
So to summarize: the US didn't start it, the UK needs it, the US is shouldering the burden of protecting it because the UK can't (or should I say won't) take responsibility and make the investment to step up to protect it. All so you can stay warm and snug with plenty of petrol and ask why the US started war in other countries and brings it to your door.
Your question seems rather self-serving and insulting to all the men and women who continue to risk their lives for your personal comfort and well being when examined in that light, doesn't it?

When recruits reach their respective units training them up to standards.
Remember training doesn't stop at training depot its ongoing and respective units.

I'll just borrow Dirk Bogarde's brilliant one-liner from the film The Four Horsemen (1960). My son was in the RAF and left about eight years ago, he said it will take over thirty years to bring the air force back to anything like what it once was. You can't simply flick a switch and have qualified air crew and engineers, it takes time and lots of money. On the subject of money, where is all the dividend from the defense cuts?
