So strange to me that people keep hedgehogs as pets, I've found a wild hedgehog a few years ago while exploring a forested area in Scotland so my name suggestion would be Scotty. I love our wild hedgehogs here in the UK along with all our other wildlife, even in my large town I still get to interact with many different species even had a fox walk past me a while back but I stood back against the wall (I was in an alleyway so there wasn't any room for me to give the little guy a good amount of space but he slowly walked up then passed me with a scared yet also interested look on his face.
Then last year while my partner was over I had an amazing encounter with a rarer species to find in England in the form of a young legless lizard found for some reason down my street, it wasn't a good place for the little guy to be and could easy get caught by a bird so on this occasion I decided to interfere and picked him up. I showed him to my partner who was over from Northern Sweden so it was new for him to see a wild reptile then we both went out to my local woodlands (their ideal habit that wasn't far from where I found him) and let him go in a place where he hopefully wouldn't be disturbed by walkers and their dogs.
Animals are just amazing and I appreciate all of them

My first time seeing a hedgehog was walking back from a pub in Scotland and I had no idea what I was looking at! I may have been just a _bit_ drunk... I always think of Scotland when I see a hedgehog now. 🙂

This is so cute but also weird. Here in Germany we also like them but we have them as wild animals and noone is keeping them as pets. People do take in baby hedgehogs or injured hedgehogs and nurture them up and then return them to the wild.
Groce but interesting: Wild hedgehogs will chew on disgusting stuff like carcasses, turn it into a paste with their saliva, and rub it into their spines. So other animals attacking them and getting stung have an elevated risk of getting a nasty infection. The reason why he likes the leather gloves is just due to his impulse to try to turn it into a bioweapon.

    • @cathyb1273

Same in France, hedgehogs are not a pet. They live in the wild, sometimes in garden, I used to have a pair, very useful to keep the snails and slugs population down. They were also feeding in the food I left for the feral cats.
It would not come to me to take them as a pet.

    • @felixtheswiss

    • @kurtilein3
      @kurtilein3 2 года назад

@@felixtheswiss If they can make hybrids with the wild variety, that would be a reason why you need permission to keep them. The one in the video also seems to be a color variety, normally they have dark fur.

Lol I’d call him Schnozz, cos he’s got an impressive one lol. I like hedgies, but unfortunately here in NZ, there’s a bit of a schizophrenic attitude towards hedgehogs. They like many creatures here, were imported by the white settlers as a reminder of home…..a nice thought but disastrous for a country with no native mammals other than bats, and lots of unique, and more importantly, ground nesting birds. Hogs will eat birds eggs and nestlings. So environmentally they’re not really approved of. Also, they’re vectors for bovine TB which is an issue in a country that produces milk as a major export, and they carry ringworm, fleas and mange all of which can be passed to pet animals. But, there are also hedgie rescue groups who take in sick hedgies(usually mange) and treat and release, and ofc gardeners like them cos they chow down on slugs n’ snails. Me, I like em. I love our native birds too but the fact is, hogs are here, eradication is all but impossible, might was well learn to get on together.

I also wore leather gloves to handle her and she got used to it really quickly. She wasn't so much scared as grumpy as all get out, once she realised I wasn't going away she kind of just went about her day and pretty much ignored me. She was absolutely unafraid of my cats and would huff at them until they left her alone. Such a cool little creature :)

@@AmandaGarrellArt I fully agree. Though a completely different species, I've spent a good deal of my life taking in and rehousing chinchillas.
They too (sometimes) need a lot of work to become social. And yes, at least a quarter of them come to me because they weren't getting the attention they needed. I've got a pair of Beiges right now that took over two years before they stopped drawing blood (very rare to find them that aggressive).
Most came to me because the previous owner had changes in their lives that meant they could no longer keep the animal (Chinchillas live anywhere from ten to twenty years on average - yes, a wide span).
Always good to do serious research and check if your desired pet suits your lifestyle, personality, free time, and that you know and can commit to their needs, longterm. There won't always be a rescue option available to you if you make an error.
That being said, I've babysat hedgies before. They are EXCEPTIONALLY adorable. Chinchillas just suited me better.

I've only come across that name in the game Tales from the Borderlands. Is that where you got it from? Just curious ;)

Love that name! It’s my son’s middle name, Kaden Rhys. Jonathan Rhys Meyers & Jonathan Rhys Davies are both well known actors, which is where I got the spelling. It’s the masculine spelling of Reese.
