  • In this film, we enter the shop of Andrew Carruthers to experience the craft and art of violin making. As his new instruments are played by a violinist in the San Francisco Symphony and a bluegrass fiddler, we see that violin construction itself becomes a performance. Carruthers details how he uses Japanese philosophy in his quest to honor the violinmaking of the old masters, and at the same time honors his own creativity.

My Caruthers Violin sounds as good as the Guarneri it was designed after.
    Brilliant maker and lovely guy.

Very nice job Chip. It must be very satisfying to have done this, and it's just beautiful. Andrew is so relaxed and modest about his process. I have much the same attitude towards guitar making (go with the flow), but I didn't realize there was a Japanese word for it.

Very nice film, Chip. This looks like a painstaking process that requires much patience. No mass production of an instrument of this quality.

I understand you will want to show the violin being played at times in your vid but why play music when you are working and talking. How am I supposed to focus on what you are saying and doing when the music is competing with what you are portraying and saying and I am very interested in your work . Do you believe that quiet or silence is to be avoided. Why not let the beautiful sounds wood makes when being worked be the music, after all these are the sounds that give berth to the violin.

Sorry for the delay, I do not get notifications and did not see your post until now. You raise a very good point, at this is my frequent complaint when watching other videos when I am trying to learn something. I did not intend this as a method video, I wanted to merge the music with the making to show them both as art. Andy says "when making a violin, it is almost like performing a symphony." I won an important award with this video and one of the judges said she just could not resist voting this video as best in category because of the counterpoint of the building and the music. This is just the direction I took. Subtracting the violin music might have worked out beautifully for many.

'stuff' is an item of vocabulary - it has nothing to do with grammatical construction. If you don't know what you're talking about, best to keep quiet, no?

You are showing either your ignorance or your prejudice. Usually folks with a chip on their shoulder can't really do much of anything.
