- Europium is one of the rarest of the rare earths. A silvery metal that quickly turns green when exposed to Oxygen in the air, its salts and oxides fluoresce and phosphoresce in a bright red color. Because of this quality, you probably had some in your CRT television or computer monitor in the past. It no longer appears in today's LCD or OLED panels.
Europium is one of the few rare earth's with a common +2 oxidation state (ytterbium is another) which means it's easy to separate from the other rare earths, especially since the sulfate is very insoluble. That probably helps explain the low price. (Cerium has a +4 state, making it even easier to separate.)
Syd,
As always, thanks for adding content I have omitted for whatever reason. Always cogent and interesting!
