I cannot Waite til snows gone and I can show off to my wife. I will be the great Canadian fire starter. I loved your other more standard techniques but this one is more for an old guy like me. Thanks for excellent lessons.
I've seen many different ways to start a fire, but this is the first I've run across this technique. This is really awesome. Simple and works! Thanks for the tutorial! Subscribed.
I can't wait to try out this technique. You're absolutely right about the Bic, fresnel lens, and ferro rod. Knowing and practicing alternative fire starting methods is excellent info, but having modern devices is always better. Thanks for sharing.
+Godly Prepping Remember this friend, every time you stop rolling, look at the fire roll, if you don't see smoke eminating from it... roll it some more. That's the most common mistake I see made. Thank You!
you absolute mad lad! I love you for sharing this! I never heard of this technique before and ive been subscribed to outdoors websites and watching 'survival' TV and vids for like 20 years!! (grabs cotton balls and runs out the door)
I just tried this for the first time, and boom, ignition! and then the few times after, Thanks for the tips and sharing videos David, now to show others.
This video just rocks. I have never heard of this method until coming across your channel. I think I know what I am trying out tonight. Thanks for sharing!
It works and is easy to do with a little practice. I got my first ember with a fire roll last week and now can consistently get ignition. As you have said once you get the feel of it you can almost tell by the feel of the short strokes that ignition has occurred.
+David West Showed my shooting/camping partner a couple today, we are on the hunt for suitable materials! I can honestly say yours is one of the most intersting and informative channels I have found. Keep up the good work.
curious, now, about completely natural friction "catalyst"... ie roots for tinder instead of jute and natural clay or even dirt instead of rust or ash for the added friction component.
+Mike fisvii Good question. If you'll notice, I always start will long casual strokes and increase my speed and pressure as I go. It's one of the main things to know about this technique. I should have pointed that out. Thank You!
Interesting. I wonder if that technique would work with fir or cattail seed fluff and using fine dirt for the friction material? (Not everyone has that convenient jar of random wood ashes around.) Looks a lot easier than other friction methods.
+pauljs75 There's some basics about fire rolling that will save you a lot of time experimenting with materials that won't work. Please research fire roll and rudiger roll before experimenting. Fibers must be incredibly strong to withstand the process. Filler material usually has to be finer powders of ash, rust, cayenne pepper, and many others. No convenient can of ash is necessary after the first fire or after you come up on the remais of an old camp fire. Damp ashes work. Good luck.
This is were most people get mad at me... If you include a BIC, keychain Ferro Rod, and a Wallet Fresnel Lens in your EDC you will always have a way to make easy fire. There is no scenario, if you have these 3 EDC, where you find yourself caught with out being able to make fire. Now, there's nothing wrong with learning all natural friction fire for the personal challenge of it. ruclips.net/video/6hyRJjNf-GE/видео.html
Nathan4071 Thanks for dropping by Nathan. I don't get to talk to you much, but I keep up with all your doing and all your channel is doing. Take care friend!
Hey Dave have a quick question I’ve been trying to get this technique down out of 100’s of attempts I have made three successful fire rolls. I have followed to a tee? I am using pine ashes is that the problem, maybe use hard wood ashes do I’ll keep at it. If you can help I sure would appreciate it sir.
Some people dont press hard enough and the roll eventually just disintegrates. Use the white ashes in a pile of ashes. You don't want any of the char or soot mixed in. Sadly, some people never get the hang of it while others like me get it on the first try.... and I got it with fabric for my first ignition... a very difficult fiber to use.
omg i cant believe its rly works i tried and successful from firs time thx you im so hapy thx david :) when first time i see thes videos i think they are fake but its rly works omg thx agen :D (sry for my english)
Josh D. Paper towel fire rolls are more difficult for a couple of reasons. Thelesding edge keeps trying to unroll and the roll disintegrates pretty quickly. These problems are easier to overcome after you gain confidence from mastering the cotton and ashes fire roll. Go to Walmart and buy a $2 bag of 100% cotton, cotton balls, then watch this video again. You will not miss if you follow these instructions. Good luck!
David West thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I will try again and take a video. Maybe I can send you the video of I don't get ignition. Maybe you will see something I'm doing wrong
myclint Clint In the last shot I used a piece of Poplar branch that was split off the branch and for some ideas on the bottom board check out this video. Thanks! ruclips.net/video/JUXIpJqKOcU/видео.html
David West Also I think all forms of friction fire in a survival situation makes no sense. It is COMPLETELY unreliable. If you know any of them well enough to make them, you won't let yourself get caught without more sure ways of making fire. Friction fire is a hobby that I enjoy but would never stake my life on. Thanks!
David West I agree but you would sooner or later run out of those things you bring then this method would be outstanding way to start fires oh and subbed ya good work here on your channel
Thanks David for all the Fire Roll videos. This past Saturday was the first time I've heard of it. Have you ever tried using sand or soil instead of ashes?
@@TheGiveittomeall I can help you if you give me a complete and thorough description of how your trying to Rudiger Roll..example... I make sure it's 100% cotton, use half a cotton ball, put white ash from wood ashes on a third or more of it, roll it up as tight as I can, give it forward strokes with the hand, then forward strokes with the board, the I roll it quickly with the top board about 15 times, if it's not smoking I repeat.
Hey Mr West, This is an old video, so I don't know if you'll get a notification or not. Have you noticed if humidity makes a difference on the fire roll's ability to actually attain an ember? I took the materials to work (in the AC) and was able to get a smoking fire roll and ember on my first try. But MULTIPLE attempts with the same exact materials outside of the AC environment (and about 80% humidity) I am only able to feel the roll get warm/ hot, but it never starts smoking or creates an ember. Any advice? Thanks! Love you channel by the way! Slowly working my way through making your hobo stove!
Yes! Moisture in the air drastically effects Rudiger Roll, char cloth, coal extenders, tinder bundles, building a fire with smalls, mediums, and larges, dust pile ignition temps may go from 600 degrees to more than 800 degrees, etc.
+47kcr That's a common question. When I tried it, it just made a big black mess on my boards and my hands. Some people say they use the char coal that's left over from a fire too. That is probably working for them because there's enough ashes mixed in to make it work. There's lots of information on youtube about the fire roll also called the rudiger roll. Thanks!

Hi David, love your videos
I was wondering if you have thought of trying dryer lint for a fire roll?
William McCleery I've tried a hundred fibers. Dryer lint is not a strong enough medium. Thanks.
very cool thanks

Brilliant
Too kind.
No luck yet, I can get the roll very hot to the touch and think I could smell smoke but nothing yet. How hard do you press down when rolling ?
The harder you press the quicker you get ignition ... to a point. You need to experiment and see what works best.

Cool,thanks. 😁⚽️😎
Please try this with a sock
Fabric has been done. A sock like a t-shirt would be too difficult for me.
Paper typically has clay or titanium dioxide in it to make it smooth, which is probably why the ash from it doesn't work.
+Doc Work I appreciate that. I got some newspaper ash to work some... but it was very weak. Thanks!
Newsprint is closer to real wood than copy paper or magazines, so I guess I'm not surprised it kind of worked.

i bet this is how the first fire was man made.only it was made out of fur?...ashes came from a natural fire.
