David, i know this video is 6 years old but thank you for you knowledge. i just finally got my first cotton roll ignition and had a successful one right after as well. i had tried with jute about 6 times prior throughout my month of watching your videos and had no luck. this video made me go out attempt it try again and finally got it! you are the first person i have heard of this technique from and im surprised its not more well known.
Thanks for the encouragement to keep going even if it hasn't worked after many tries... I finally got it and realized that I was trying too hard and probably put many attempts out before I noticed smoke. Taking apart some old attempts that were laying around they had a very black core on the inside... Always happy to have another way to light fire without matches... Thank you...
Yes rolling 10 times then turning the fire roll 180 degrees and giving it 10 more rolls keeps the fire roll from getting so compact and hard that it snuffs out the ember. See my fire roll playlist.
Since you opened my eyes to this technique I've been having a blast sharing it with my family and friends.Ive only done this with cotton and jute but it is fairly easy if your instructions are followed.Be well.

One can never learn enough ways to make fire. This is a great one to add to anyone's collection. Although there are many techniques to create a fire you never know what you will have on hand at the time.

I have finally started getting a bit more success getting ignition using spent material from a "hot hands" packet as my accellerent. Out of 150-200 tries I only ever got an ember once using charcoal ash, which I assume is wood ashes. It gets damned hot most times but not to the point of igniting. With the stuff from the "hot hands" packet I just paused your video here and went out and tried it and got an ember the first time. I'm guessing the "hot hands" stuff is closer to rust, which you've used successfully before. I would recommend anyone having trouble mastering fire rolling to try it with the material out of a "hot hands" packet or perhaps some rust scrapings. It's good for your confidence to finally have success at the technique and hopefully once I'm nearly dead on with this material I can do better with ashes.

Great videos on fire rolling, Dave! When in the woods, would splitting/batonning a 2-3" dead branch provide the two flat surfaces you need for the rolling method?

Hi Dave, I had to watch this vid because yesterday, after I saw one of your other vids, I ran outside to try it out. The first one worked perfect. It was wickedly cold here in PA so I didn't have a tinder bundle but just wanted to see if I could get the cotton to ignite. Yup! It worked! But you know what they say about "beginners luck." So I tried a second, third, 4th, 5th... Not only was I freezing, my finger tips burning from the cold, but I couldn't get ignition again? I tried fast rolling, tried leaning my feather weight 283 lb. body into it, and no matter what, the best I came out with was going from a rolled cotton ball to a thread like strand of dust? I don't get it. But... I'm still a believer that it works, especially seeing you doing it behind your back. So now I'm wondering, maybe it was just too cold to produce enough heat when rolling and the first time I did it, it was a fluke. Not sure, any thoughts or suggestions? -Mike
See my fire roll playlist for multiple tutorials. Extreme cold has no effect on the fire roll. Usually a disintegrated fire roll means your not pressing down hard enough. 20 rolls or less should do it. A roll is a forward and return.
It seems easy, but my roll keeps unrolling after some time no matter how tight I get it. Will try some more as this seems like something that's really worth getting good at.

So, I'm thinking that the fibers coated in ash are forced to rub against each other creating INTENSE heat, all the while this intense heat can not escape because of the insulating properties of the ash so it gets even hotter, until finally the distressed fibers allow a pathway for all that heat to make its way from the center, to the outer fibers and to the air... which completes the ignition process. Hello Mr. West, when I have to use this in nature or on other places where I don't have any ashes could I use also some dried sand or wooddust? (sorry when I made mistakes I normaly speak a german dialekt).

I tried with 100% cotton and ash I found in an outdoor stove, but it did not work. Later, I learned that the ash was from burning paper, so the glues in the paper was likely the problem. Next, I tried rabbit dung, and it worked so easily. I never had trouble the rest of the day. I tried to show someone the next day, and it failed. I tried a few days later, and it failed. I tried today, and it failed. I get smoke, but it keeps going out. I've tried rolling more, faster speeds, more pressure, and fine and thick rabbit dung powder, but it keeps going out. I'm trying to feed it oxygen, but I think it's not getting enough. Any ideas?
