ill grill them over very hot coals with some wood chunks for flavor (oak is what I usually use but whatever floats your boat) just long enough to get some char on the asparagus then finish them off in the oven with some butter salt and pepper until tender. so good.
I prefer to peel the asparagus then cut off the bottom 1/2". A little more work but gets them to 4*+ restaurant quality. I figure 4 spears per person. If cooking for a ton of people then cutting the bottom 3rd off may be a big time saver. Time vs quality.

The way I grill asparagus is wrapped in bacon( preferably maple) and brushed with melted butter and brown sugar blend.
