Both, the hero (our character) and Stranger (the main villain) are Proximus. They are the same person but one is the corrupted version and the second is the good version. When Proximus was born, he had Shadow Mind in him. Shadow accidentally killed May while trying to kill Shadow Mind and before May died she used magic to split the corrupted side of her son and transport it to the Shadow World because it would die in the real world. Therefore, there were now two versions of Proximus. Stranger (the one in the Shadow World) and Hero (the one in the real world that joined the Legion in chp 1)
