Informative video. It’s worth mentioning that heavier skaters can use a shallower hollow, and hard ice needs a deeper one. Synthetic ice needs a deeper hollow too.
Glad you are back making more videos! This was very educational. The guy who sharpens blades at my rink said he typically does 7/16ths for my type of skate blade. I had no idea what it meant and just trusted him, but now I know!
I am happy to be back too! 😄 I am glad you found it educational. I used to always have to ask my coach because I could never remember what number to tell the sharpening guy. Education is always a good thing.
This is like the first solid video I have seen on sharpening figure skates. Most vids are on hockey skates. Good info here and I can not say this guy is doing anything wrong. Great equipment and total respect that he is humble about it too. Non of the figure skate coaches at my rink can answer any questions about figure skate sharpening. Its always the same 1/2 inch. What you said makes total sense. Our ice is on the colder side too so I think I deeper cut you be more helpful.
Hey, I am glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! I was surprised when I began considering starting a channel at the lack of info out there for figure skaters. There is sooooo much info out there for Hockey skaters!!!
This is a really interesting video. I really think the quality of the sharpening is more important than the actual ROH. I say this because I just brought my Edea skates to a pro shop in Frankfurt where they even sharpen for Olympic skaters. With this ultra precise cut, I find that I don’t need a very deep ROH at all. In fact, I like how it is right in the middle and gives me good grip but also a really decent amount of glide. I suggested he go up to a “deeper” cut and he recommended against it. I am at a 5/8” ROH and extremely happy with it. It’s interesting how personal it is for each skater! I just love having the extra speed and would worry that a 1/2” would already be too sticky and slow me down. I am a skater who skates with quite deep edges by the way. Only doing single jumps at the moment and pretty nice one foot spins.
This is the best video I've ever watched on radius of hollow. I now have a better understanding regading hallows. I had my blades sharpened three times in the past until I found the right hollow. Next time, I know exactly what I would tell the tech for my hollow preference. I subscribed to your channel so I won't miss any information that you would share with your audience. Thank you.
@@CoachJulia Yep. Where I am at, I have to go several hours away to get my blades sharpened. It sucks. My rink does offer skate sharpening, but they have no idea on how to really sharpen skates, so it's not worth the risk.
ah, my good old 1/2 inch. I did this when I did figures and I got used to it from when I was a child (late 70s, I'm a dinosaur!) That swizz swizz swizzz sound when you spin is like skating meditation ASMR lol.
Awesome video. I haven't skated since 1988 and with Texas in a deep freeze, I recently broke out my skates. Discouraged to see the blades with some tiny rust spots. I thought I did thoroughly dry them, but I guess it wasn't good enough the last time I skated Very informative video and thanks to Brett, also for the explanation. Thank you so much for posting this video! I thought different blades have different edges…now I know it depends on how the blades are sharpened! Very helpful.
Yay! Thanks for the good wishes, I am healing slowly, but I am determined to get back out on the ice as soon as I am safely able. 😊 Glad you found the video interesting.
I had mine sharpened about 6hrs (of skating) ago and it felt duller than before, I wasn't sure how they did it cause I didn't see it. I dropped them off today to get it redone by someone more experienced, now I can ask them questions to make sure it's done right. Thank you for the information!
You are welcome! Make sure you always know what hollow to ask for and then first thing you want to do is try a one-foot glide on each skate to make sure you can glide straight. If you pull to one side or the other they may have over sharpened one edge.
@@CoachJulia This would be the 3rd time I have my blades sharpened. I will ask them what radius they used and try one-foot glide, hopefully it turns out right. Thank you! This also explained why I kept turning when I was learning one-foot glide, which was after the 1st sharpening.

Ik I’m a few months late, but I have a question. My brother used to take ice skating lessons, but he used hockey skates and I’m using figure skates. He told me that after sharpening your blades, you shouldn’t go right to skating. You should sharpen skates a few days prior to actually going out to skate. Is this true? I’d believe him, but he only took 2 skating lessons then he quit because he wasn’t having fun, so idk how accurate everything he says is. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m a new skater. Also, thank your for this video! It gave me a lot of insight and needed information.
Hey, I am glad you have found my video helpful. I don’t know where your brother got that idea, but there is definitely nothing wrong with sharpening your skates and then skating on them right away. I have done it many times.
I use snowplow stops and t-stops at the boards to help dull my blades just a bit after a sharpening. Also, the adjustment to sharpened skates shouldn't take that long (like maybe a single FS session) if you get them sharpened regularly.
I bet a master at my ice rink is nowhere close to Brett in his skills :( I never felt any dramatic change after sharpening and also I'm quite bad at skating and holding myself on the ice. Seems like my edges are done wrong. I even stopped going skating at winters 3 years ago coz it was not that pure fun. Maybe this year I'll revive my skating by bringing it to another level thanks to both of you, Julia and Brett! You should definitely do more videos on technical aspects of figure skating!
Hi!! This is rlly useful. I just got my first pair of skates and I never had lessons. I only skated like with friends to hang out but would like to learn to be better. How much does it cost to get your skates sharpened. Also the cost for lessons for a person like me (I have some experience but nothing to pro) and skate guards. What kinda are better? Plastic ones? Thank uuu!!
It’s hard to give a good answer since cost on things varies from rink to rink and coach to coach. At my rink, sharpening skates is $15, private lessons at my rink range from $35 to $54 for a half hour lesson. For skate guards, you definitely want a plastic pair, these are a good all-size pair... amzn.to/3hfVPNb
Great video i learned a lot thank you i use my skates for 18 years now they are bauer supreme 7000 i like to skate everyday if i can i am very particular when it comes to sharpen skates i like 11.16 i try other but dont like too deep its funny how it is
i go skating tomorrow and i forgot to book the rentals. I had a pair of ice skates from 2 years ago and they still fit me - so i figured i can use them? the blade does look a bit rusted but only on the sides i’m just hoping they will work and be ok lol
Thank you for this very informative video. I have a quick question, I just bought my first pair of skates, I'm still a beginner. I have noticed a small nick on the inside of one blade, at the bottom where the sharp edge should be. Can this be corrected with sharpening or should I return the skates? I could only see in the video that the bottom of the blades get sharpened, but not the sides. Thank you!
It is the bottom of the blade that gets hollowed out, most nicks get sharpened out that way. if you are very careful, you may be able to use a hand stone to polish out the nick, but without seeing it, I can’t say for sure.
How many of those snowplow stops might one need to get the stickiness after a sharpening off? I find I usually need about ten skating hours after a sharpening for the blades to feel nice again, which seems so long.
I'm getting my skates sharpened tomorrow and then I only have one lesson to dull them before a big competition... I'm super nervous that the sharpening are gonna make them more difficult to skate on... i just binged watched like 10 videos on skate sharpening to calm myself down
What do you do if the pro shop messed up your sharpening? Do you just go get it re-sharpened? And about how long can a blade last before it needs to be replaced (not based on number of sharpenings, but time)?
if your sharpening was messed up, say, one edge is hugger than the other, a good technician can fix that with an new sharpening. if they put a dent before your toe pick then that can’t really be repaired. So it depends on the situation. I can’t really give you a length of time, as every skater skates different. I used to skate 4 hours a day 5 days a week, which means my sharpenings needed to be pretty frequent. If you only skate once a week then they will last much longer.
Could you specify what is a dent before the toe pick? I’m worried this happened to my skates now. They’re more shaved closer to the toe pick on the rocker.
I’ve been looking for ice skates on eBay. I’m an in-line skater but I would like to have my own pair of ice skates. Any suggested brands? And any specific things I should keep in mind when I choose a pair? Thank you so much this video btw!!!

what should i do if the only pro-shop is more than 10 hours away? is there a way i could sharpen my skates by myself? where i live we don’t get much snow and there’s only about three ice skating arenas in the whole state, so there’s not a huge demand for pro shops.
I was always told that i will be able to feel it when u need to sharpen it. Like if it feel like i am skating on butter knifes. Then i will need to go to my local shop.
I'm new to ice skating and i received two days ago a ice skates, but I don't know should i sharpend it by myself, because the place where they do that is too far.And how if somebody knew.I realy don't know what to do.
It is not a good idea to sharpen them yourself unless you have training in the skate sharpening process and all the right equipment. A poorly done sharpening can ruin a pair of blades. If there is any way to get them to a sharpening shop and have them done professionally, that is better.
What did he use at 8:14 to make sure both edges were even? I don't know what that tool is. What tool did he use to get the small burrs off of the blade near the end?
I am a bit scared cause we don't have a proshop. My soft skates got their first sharpening at the rink. Coach sharpens hers there as well. Now i am waiting for my JW ace coronation blades and i don't want theme ruined =(
I’m a beginner level 6, I’ve just gotten my skates sharpened for the first time. I found it difficult to do a two foot spin after sharpening. Is this normal?
I don’t live near a figure skate store (Pro Shop) so I went to Sport Chek to get my figure skates sharpened. I told them specifically that I wanted a 5/8” hollow and they even wrote it down, but when I looked at the skates after, I didn’t see a hollow at all. Do you think they could’ve mistaken it or done something else instead? How deep does a hollow look on the blade for a 5/8” cut? And can you recommend me any stores that I could get my figure skates sharpened next time that would guarantee best results?
I got some edea overtures with a legacy 7 blade and just discovered our winter rink opening tommorow doesnt sharpen and we have no skate shop as im on an island. I dont want to have to pay £40+ to ship my skates when they need sharpening but im planning to skate around 8 hours a week. Sigh gotta love island life
Oh my gosh, that is a tough situation to be in. I do know that there are some sharpeners designed for home use, I wonder if that might be a solution. I know people here in california who have them and they offering sharpening services to a lot of people.
I just got fitted with a new boot after years away from skating. I had a used blade put on it (pro said it looked like it was in petty good shape). I feel a wobble on just my left skate particularly on an outside edge or when picking up a little speed with crossovers. Do you know what could cause a feeling of wobble moving cross the ice. It’s not my body, just my foot! They took down the sharpness of the left blade a bit but that didn’t solve it.
hmm. It’s hard to say what could be causing that, all I can say is that I feel like I have had a similar experience when my edges weren’t sharpened level. so one edge ended up lower than the other and it caused me to feel unsteady on one edge. perhaps take a level to the blade and check?
I have always been curious if figure skaters ever need to get their toe picks sharpened, or if that is just a sign that your blades need to be replaced.
Okay so I just recently got my new figure skates sharpened because the blades were brand new, but when I got them back, the back of the blade was completely rounded off. Will this make a a big difference? I’m not aware of what the back of the blade exactly does, would anyone care to explain what it’s for?
I see you lacing skates from inside to outside, is this the correct way? I have seen on edea official RUclips channel that correct way is outside to inside.
Beware! Just because a rink has a “pro shop”, it doesn’t necessarily mean they know how to sharpen FIGURE skates. They may even tell you they can, then proceed to give you a hockey skate sharpening. My sister took 5 pairs of high quality skates to a rink in her new neighborhood, since she couldn’t find someone who was a skate expert. Ignored the clues that their skate shop was 95% hockey related. Sure enough, all the skates had awful, no hollow finishes, and almost ruined. Wasted about $100. Finally found an expert where I live in NJ who repaired the damage. Make sure you get recommendations from figure pros!
You only want to sharpen to a point where you can still avoid damaging the toe pick in the process. If you are sharpening on a machine that has a spinning wheel, like the one in this video, you just want to get that wheel as close to the toe pick as possible, without hitting it. If you are doing it by hand, with a hand stone, you can get all the way up to the Toe Pick.
@@CoachJulia I'm assuming that can't be corrected? I have the Jackson Elles so would I be able to go elsewhere and get a new set of blades if that's the case?
@@melaniemoore2221 it cannot be corrected. You either have to try and live with it for a time, or purchase a new pair of blades and have them mounted. The old holes will need to be filled before they put the new blades on.
The sad thing is I'm a skater from the Philippines so we can't find any professional ppl who could sharpen our blades. We have to go abroad for that unless we let the skating rink maintenance ppl do the sharpening which is a major no-no as I tried it so many times only for my blades to be murdered 😭
That's not very accurate. They might train that many hours a day but more than half the training is off the ice doing ballet, cardio, jumps, plyometrics etc.
I have to build a sharpening machine, then practice in order to learn to use it, cuz in my country nobody cand sharpen a balade with that middle groove. 🤦 Probably I'm gonna modify my chainsaw chain sharpener.
@@CoachJulia yes it does.. Very interesting video and details.. Love it..😘 sadly in my country never snow, there were indoor skating park but they always didn't last long.. After few months they always closed..

Do you think they could’ve mistaken it or done something else instead? How deep does a hollow look on the blade for a 5/8” cut? And can you recommend me any stores that I could get my figure skates sharpened next time that would guarantee best results?
My only suggestion for this is to try taking them to a shoe repair shop and see if they are able to stitch them back together.
is it ok to use the sandstone small sharpening thing on ur ice skate blade?
Would you recommend risport rf3 for a beginner adult?
the video was very interesting but still i'm not sure which is the best sharpening for me, how do i figure it out? i'm desperate 😭
Thanks so useful❤
Always glad I can help you all.
They took down the sharpness of the left blade a bit but that didn’t solve it.
hmm. It’s hard to say what could be causing that, all I can say is that I feel like I have had a similar experience when my edges weren’t sharpened level. so one edge ended up lower than the other and it caused me to feel unsteady on one edge. perhaps take a level to the blade and check?
lmfao the girl in the back at 8:10 🤣 very good video tho 👍🏼 thank you!
Glad you enjoyed
I have always been curious if figure skaters ever need to get their toe picks sharpened, or if that is just a sign that your blades need to be replaced.
No, just the blades. The toe picks will slowly dull over time, but there really isn't anything that can be done about it.
What is the stuff they use to get the soles Glossy like that, looks damn NICE ???
Okay so I just recently got my new figure skates sharpened because the blades were brand new, but when I got them back, the back of the blade was completely rounded off. Will this make a a big difference? I’m not aware of what the back of the blade exactly does, would anyone care to explain what it’s for?
You probably had a hockey player sharpen them. We use the back of the blade when we turn from backwards to forwards. That is unfortunate. 😕
I see you lacing skates from inside to outside, is this the correct way? I have seen on edea official RUclips channel that correct way is outside to inside.
Edea does have a different lacing recommendation than most boots do. I wear Harlick skating boots and they recommend lacing inside to outside.
How close do you sharpen to the pick? trying to figure out how much space to leave lol
@@CoachJulia Okay thank you! Didn’t know if where the sharpening started affected the rocker (spinning area) in any way
Really want to Thank you for this video is excelente👧💌⛸⛸🙂⭐⭐⭐
Glad you enjoyed it!
How sharp do sfr galaxy begginer skates have to be?😊
Generally a 1/2 works well for beginners.
@@CoachJulia Thanks your videos are very helpful😊😀
I will watch these videos simply to see the Beautiful Julia! 😍
Well thank you.
But now the blade's on my old ice skate's are all rusty now and I can't ice skate with those one's now
How important is it to not have the end of the blade rounded off? The place I took my skates to for sharpening rounded the end off?
Oh my gosh, I have had that happen. It's awful. They basically are giving you a hockey blade cut.
@@CoachJulia okay thanks!
2:35 radius 2:54 inch comparisons
👍🏻
Where I am from they don’t ask about the depth of the hollow. we have a standard cut.
I never had my ice skate's sharpened before
The sad thing is I'm a skater from the Philippines so we can't find any professional ppl who could sharpen our blades. We have to go abroad for that unless we let the skating rink maintenance ppl do the sharpening which is a major no-no as I tried it so many times only for my blades to be murdered 😭
That is so hard. maybe you can learn to sharpen skates and all the figure skaters can have you do it. 😄
@@CoachJulia good idea, it's for the best. I'd like to ask how to start? Do I go abroad to learn from sharpeners? Are there actual classes for that?
I feel like my blades were sharpened to much can they like dull them?
You can ask them to hand stone them and that will knock a bit of the sharpness off.
The soles of your boots look so shiny. What did you do with them?
This is a 'chem glaze' finish from Harlick. It is one of their options and gives a very strong water proof finish.
We just made a skating rink and we don’t have a sharpener I just do figure skating cause of Covid we can’t get them sharpened
That is so hard when you can't get them sharpened! Hopefully that changes soon for you.
so the competitive ones are on ice more than 10 hrs a day, does that mean they get their blades sharpened every other day????
That's not very accurate. They might train that many hours a day but more than half the training is off the ice doing ballet, cardio, jumps, plyometrics etc.
Some competitive athletes sharpen their skates once a week, others go so far as every two weeks, just depends on their preference.
Hi I had to switch my name because of information my dad helped me with this -tiff your old student
Thanks for subscribing Tiffany!
No probs!
But when I used to wear my old ones
I was able to get those one's sharpened
I have to build a sharpening machine, then practice in order to learn to use it, cuz in my country nobody cand sharpen a balade with that middle groove. 🤦 Probably I'm gonna modify my chainsaw chain sharpener.
Oh my goodness, that seems like quite a challenging project. There are at home sharpeners you ca buy, perhaps look into one of those?
@@CoachJulia I've just order one, to see if it is anygood. I really want my skate "to grip" like when they were new.
That is because I have new ice skate's
You’re such a sweet heart. My friend Meghan has your same sweetness 💕🥰
Oh thank you!
Please send me the address for the rink I desperately need my skates sharpened!

Hopefully this gave you some insight. 😃
@@CoachJulia yes it does.. Very interesting video and details.. Love it..😘 sadly in my country never snow, there were indoor skating park but they always didn't last long.. After few months they always closed..
