SG: Not really. That’s not a thing people say anymore.
PG: Well, I’m bringing it back, baby!
SG: Well, good luck with that, weirdo. So this movie’s about some rando person’s life story.
PG: Oh. Is it a documentary, or one of those inspirational “based on a true story” movies that’ll make me cry?
SG: Well, see, it’s about this girl who wanted to be famous when she grew up.
PG: Do tell.
SG: Doesn’t sound any better, sir.
PG: Give it time, it’ll grow on you.
SG: Don’t think so. Anyway, turns out she’s got a bunch of mental issues she was born with, but since she was born in the 80’s, mental health diagnoses weren’t really a thing you took seriously.
PG: Indubitably.
SG: What?
PG: Just trying out another one. (in British accent) I’m fancy.
SG: Of course, sir. So anyway, she wants to be a musician and a writer and a bunch of creative stuff, but her insecure mother and her own mental hang-ups keep getting in the way.
PG: Ooh, another female-driven movie about women overcoming the odds and shattering societal expectations? (fading enthusiasm) Another one?
SG: Well, see, in high school she goes out with this guy with long hair who wants to be a rock star.
PG: Wow, rock star boyfriends with long hair are TIGHT!
SG: Yeah, maybe, but this boyfriend turns out to have undiagnosed mental illness and the two start emotionally self-destructing and split up.
PG: Ah, another “smart, independent woman who don’t need no man” protagonist. (mild disdain) Again.
SG: Not really, sir. But anyway, when she grows up she gets diagnosed with stuff like OCD, ADHD, crippling anxiety and possibly high-functioning autism, but no one really knows because the definitions keep changing.
PG: Oh, boy!
SG: And even though she‘s married to a nice guy and has a healthy relationship, she struggles with feeling both like an entitled high-functioning disabled person who’s somehow deprived of her destiny to be an artiste, and a crap-fire waste of oxygen.
PG: Oh, wow. Tumultuous turmoil. (rolling his r’s) Grrrripping!
SG: Indeed.
PG: See? Told you it’d catch on.
SG: What?
PG: Fancy-speak. You just did it.
SG: I wouldn’t consider “indeed” a fancy word.
PG: Butlers say it all the time. (British accent) “Indeed, sir.”
SG: Wow, you’re right! That IS fancy!
PG: Yes! (fist pump) I win! I win! Anyway, you were saying, loser?
SG: Anyway, so she gets some therapy and tries to gain the courage to have a child by getting a dog, but then her grandma dies and unearths a bunch of hidden emotional garbage she’s been repressing from past trauma.
PG: (unenthusiastically) Wow, just more emotional stuff, huh?
SG: Yes, sir. And she discovers all she does is spiral in a circle of trying to improve herself, finding out she can’t afford it and falling back into bad habits. And her dog sucks.
PG: Oh, wow wow wow wow…wow.
SG: Yeah. So after her grandma dies, she learns her mom had similar upbringing and struggles growing up, so despite the girl’s best efforts, she grew up to be a repressed creative, just like her insecure mom. So she’s thinking about breaking the cycle and not having children.
(BEAT)
PG: Wait, that’s the movie?
SG: Yep, that’s it. What’d you think?
PG: I didn’t hear an ending.
SG: Yeah, no. It’s just that. A girl trying to break her family’s personal Ouroboros of insecure women begetting insecure women.
PG: Ouro-what? That sounds fancy. Can we put that in the ending?
SG: A snake eating itself?
PG: Oh, is that what an Auror is?
SG: No, sir. An Auror is a Harry Potter thing.
PG: Ooh, is Harry Potter in this movie?
SG: ‘Fraid not, sir. This story is about a real-live person, not a fake wizard.
PG: Well, that’s a shame. Not sure this pitch is a winner.
SG: (disappointed) Aw, really?
PG: Yeah, sorry chief. Come back when you’ve got a cool lady protagonist that actually gets things done, or an action movie, or something. Think you can handle that? (under his breath in a British accent) You pathetic, loser sissy-man?
