- Harley Davidson Sportster gas tank removal and screen cleaning. It is good to check the condition of your gas tank screen and replace if needed when you clean the carburetor on your motorcycle with a rusted or dirty gas tank.

Another great maintenance vid . If this is done as routine it will avoid a breakdown , Thanks my friend
No problem 👍
rocco ...... thanks so much for your videos they have given me the confidence to dive into the maintenance on my recently purchased 2001 sportster, the bike had been sitting for a long time so when i started riding it the petcock started leaking. after watching your video i decided to fix this problem myself, i went the route of pulling the tank off and servicing the fuel screen at the same time as replacing the petcock. thanks a million $$$ Dale

Thanks, Rocco! So far, this vid has been the only one on RUclips showing how to take off gas tank from a carbureted sportster. One additional question: how should I empty the tank if it’s almost full? Also, I wish you could make a video about how to clean and re-coat the tank. Thanks again!

That vent any pressure from inside your gas tank. Open your gas cap and that's that small pipe you see. Thank you for your Sub Tim. Any questions just ask. Ride Safe and have a great day.
Great Video:) Thank you!
On the Petcock, does that Vacuum line go straight to the Carb?
Happy to help. The Petcock vacuum line goes to a T that one goes to Carb. and the other goes to an advance module.Make sure those vacuum lines are not failing. That tends to with the older bikes, because of heat and fatigue replace if needed. Thank you for watching and your support Bell. Any questions just ask. Ride safe and have a great day.

Two Wheel Rocco my petcock has another small hose on the back. What is that for?
That 1/4 hose is a vacuum line for your petcock that comes from your Carburator This controls your gas flow. On/Off Make sure that is working. .ruclips.net/video/7Fo9Q93OJXI/видео.html. Hope this helps. Let us know how this works out.

silly question but why the ground wire from the frame to the gas tank? (its purpose
)
None, That I can see. Tank is bolted to the frame??? Only seen this on older sportsters.

I always just replace that screen. It's only $5, and they tend to harden after a while due to ethanol gas. They can get brittle enough to actually break off.
I agree. Thank you for watching and your comment. Ride safe and have a Great Happy Holiday.
Been watching your videos for a little bit now, so thank you! QUESTION: I have a 2003 HD Sportster, 1200, 100th Anniversary, and the gas tank is I believe 3.3 gallons. I'm having an issue with the fuel, it seems that when I hit around 60 miles after filling up, the bike cuts off. I then switch to the reserve, and the bike will run again. Do you think I need to clean the gas filter, or, is there something else going on? There's still plenty of gasoline in the tank, but I can't seem to get past 60 miles before the bike starts to cut off, causing me to turn the reserve on and then I refill up with gas.
Happy to help I would clean the gas tank take a look at your Petcock and buy a new screen. Sounds like you got a gas flow problem take a look at the vacuum hose coming off the Petcock to the Carburator. Sometimes they get old and fatigued and they start to collapse starving the bike of gas. Thank you for watching and all your support CMJP. Ride safe and have a great day.
Nice. I have the exact same bike. I need to pull my tank to replace my coil. Going to do all this while it is off.
Why do you think you need a coil? Thank you for your support.
'96 1200C Sportster. I have to leave choke out halfway for it to run right after warmed up. Then of course it idles high at a stop. Anything, I can try without having to do a carb rebuild? Thanks1
Happy to help. That's an indication that your starter jet or idle jet is partially clogged and your choke is compensating for that. I will send you a video on how to clean your carburetor. My 2016 883 If I try to start it in morning it cranks like 5 times and won't start. Then I turn key off and try the starring process over a 2nd time. The bike fires up and idles and runs down the road perfect! Could it be a clogged gummed fuel tank screen? The last owner didn't ride it allot. Thanks so much for any help
How many miles? I would first try to run some kind of gas and injector cleaner every time you put a full tank of gas and I think your problem should go away. I will send a video on cleaning the intake and your air filter. Let us know how it works out. Take a look. ruclips.net/video/hzxxamT5HL8/видео.html. The Sportster is like halfway on your oil dipstick. Take a look at your air filter if it is saturated with oil clean it do not read oil it and put it on dry. It all helps.
Great video, as usual. Do you have a video that shows how to remove the rear fender on the Sportster? Or can you point to where I can find one? I have a 97..
No I do not. The trick is removal of your turn signals. this is wired to your rear running brake light. You will need to pull pins from you wire plugs. So you can pull your wire throw the fender and your strut. Hope this helps. A must turn signal first. Any question just ask. Thank you for your Sub Will. Let us know how this works out.
On my 2002 softail heritage I noticed that my petcock is rusty as hell. Should go ahead and buy a new one with the new screen or just the petcock only?

What is the easiest way to reinstall the tank so the wiring harness is cleared by the rear of the tank? It came off easy but being a bitch to put it back on.
Happy to help. Just be patient move the rear tank side to side over the wires and then put the bolt and you'll have to put the washer by the tank flange and put a bolt through it. That will work..
Rocco if that much gunk or rust was on the filter, would it not have been better to flush out the tank with the petcock out.

Your videos are excellent. The background music is a little distracting but the content is wonderful. I have one question: At the end of the video, you have a clear hose dropping down from above the brake pedal; what is it attached to? You didn't (unless I missed it) hooking it up or the purpose of it.
That hose is temporary. It leaked gas from Carburator. So the clear hose made it easy to see if gas was leaking from the overflow on carb. from bad float needle jet.
Thanks! What is your opinion of non-vacuum petcocks like the Pingel or Golan as replacements for the stock vacuum petcocks?
@@boomerguy9935 Dont do it. You wont the vacuum gas supply. You can buy the pet cock replacement part for under $35 at dealer. Thats the only way to go in my opinion. Let us know how this works out.

Am I needing to put a rubber washer in where the petcock goes?
Yes, you will need that rubber seal or it will leak. line it up correctly and you'll have no problem. Make sure you have a screen in place. And you should be OK.

Hi thanks for video, first I've seen that showed vacuum on petcock, I have a 2001/2002 883r,on a ride started sputtering then all fine ,the half hour later stopped ,some blokes rode passed then stopped help me out pulled hoses off etc then she ran again hour later stopped again in morning idled but test ride stopped again, mates saying might be blocked filter, maybe vacuum mate said he could smell fuel when riding behind me when sputtering, spark? I'm just unsure where to start, good straight forward video mate good job cheers
Happy to help. I would check the Petcock Diaphragm and the vacuum hoses that cross over to the carburetor. Sometimes they get old and Gumi and collapse as you're riding and that cuts off the flow of fuel. Sometimes the diaphragm in the petcock is bad not working properly and giving you all sorts of problems. I will send a video to show you how to test. Can you get all the gas out just by draining from the petcock, or is there still some gas in the tank?

Hey Rocco, your videos are very helpful. I notice you didn't use any thread sealer or tape on the fuel valve when reinstalling. Your thoughts on this, please?
Happy to help. There is no need for thread sealer, it is a pipe thread so as you tighten it, the seal that's in the petcock does its job. If not, you didn't tighten it enough. Take a close look at it and you will see what I'm talking about. Your Petcock screen acts as the gasket as a seal. let us know how it works out. Thank you for watching and your sub. I couldn't hear this very well, but I didn't notice that you were concerned about any residue in the gas that you left inside the tank. While you had the petcock and filter completely out, you could have drained the rest of the gas out of the tank just to see if there was anything else floating around in there.
I agree. Just trying to show the basics. Thank you for your Sub. Ride Safe and have a great day.
What is that ground wire you took off? I don't think my bike has that attached. 🤔 Is it from the battery?

Two Wheel Rocco Merry Christmas
Hello my go to man for everything Harley related. Got a question. Do you know much about the old evolution road Kong’s
What year? and Question?
Two Wheel Rocco it’s a 1989 I just bought it rode it 2 hours home. Was just fine
Well today got on it to ride and when in 5th gear it was acting really weird like not wanting to accelerate or anything.
Well I got it almost home and I turned it off and was gonna push it while in neutral now even in neutral with bike off trying to push it and back wheel keeps locking up
If you pull in your clutch, Will it roll?
Two Wheel Rocco yeah but only for a second and then the rear wheel locks up even if lifted off the ground I can spin the tire and then it hits and locks up
Sounds like transmission, With clutch pulled in it should move freely. So your problem is after your clutch. Trans or rear wheel is left to check. Make sure it is not stuck between gears. With your bike on the ground, roll back and forward try to switch gear to neutral. Let me know how that works out.
