Destin!!! Who da man?... You da man!!! Have a great adventure and please bring Emily back in one piece! Already preparing for your awesome video to be posted of your trip to Peru. Take care and keep getting smart!!!
This is so exciting. I'm so excited. Ughhhhhhh! The question that begs asking now is, while you're in Peru, will you be drinking coffee or mate? HARD-HITTING QUESTIONS WITH UNKNOWN ANSWERS!
Bring Lomotil (antidiarrheal). If you don't have any, find out who on the expedition does. Mad props to you and the team for openly discussing diarrhea and periods. I look forward to what we'll learn about Peru, science, and the realities of field work.
I'm so excited for you! From the outside, it looks like the last year has been an amazing rocket speed ride of adventure and it looks like it just keeps getting more wonderful. I am always excited by the knowledge and info you share, but I think I'm even more excited by watching your life adventure.
More with Anna and Bill please! Actually seeing more faces of the field museum would be great! Really looking forward to the videos from the expedition, be safe Emily and have fun!
Good luck, and bon voyage! I'm looking forward to your mind blowing tales of adventure when you return. I used to read Gerald Durrell's and David Attenborough's books about animal collection for vicarious adventure. Now I can watch the Brain Scoop.
What a great, multifaceted video! The combination of sheer excitement, honest thoughts, and legendary stories made it a wonderful watch from start to finish!
I am super excited! I honestly CANNOT wait for the videos! I hope you talk about all the little details of surviving in the rainforest and tell us what you did with your period and every thing, I mean every single thing please, please, please, pleaaassseeeeeeee!!1
If biology class had started with peeing to fend off warthogs and chasing bats in remote villages it probably wouldn't have been my second to least favorite subject in school. FYI to any teachers out there.
Same!!! One of my teachers in highschool was incredibly boring to the point I hated biology, but in my last high school year I had a brilliant and experienced teacher that shared her research experiences (She wasn't a field biologist but that didn't stop her telling us about cool lab stuff). I am now not far from graduating as a biologist!!!
I think this is going to be my favorite episode - right after the dissections. I love hearing weird travel stories. Also episodes like this remind me that a great deal of the scientists we see that are so amazing and the "epitome of logic and reasoning" for so many people... episodes like this blow that misconception so out of the water and it's fantastic.
On a purely technical aspect, a question for Tom: How do you plan to charge batteries in the jungle? Do you have to pack tons of fresh battery packs or will the expedition have a generator or some sort?
Generators can work but you have to carry the fuel for them also. My guess is they will bring small solar panels and just conserve as much as possible. And yes, he'll probably pack a ton of lithion ion batteries.
We have so many frontiers; the deep sea, the uncharted wilderness, space, and more that I'm not thinking of I'm sure. And you're going into one of them! It makes me a little teary. You're explorers and you're right that it's not all it's romanticized as. And that's what makes it wonderful, and that's what makes all of you so very awesome.
The most vivid rich memory I have of the Peruvian Amazon was the feeling and smell of the air as the sun was setting. Enjoy! It won't all be comfortable, but it will be a life enriching experience that you will likely treasure.
OMG Each and every one of these people is so cool, and funny, and smart, and interesting at the same time, but Anna steals the crown. I absolutely adore her.
Holy mother of wows, this is amazing and Anna and Bill are rockstars. I cant wait to see what you bring back from this trip. I mean stories, science and footage, not diseases. Hope you travel safe and get your mind blown by the jungle as much as possible. Have fun.
I am so excited to see your guys' adventures! You'll have to let me know about the period thing, I've always wondered about that too! Good luck and be careful!
As a college student currently studying ecology and evolution, but also goes through weekly "mid-life crisis" about what I want to do with my life, this really helped show me that I'm on the path I want to be on. Thanks Brain Scoop, you're awesome!
Perhaps a menstrual cup that you wash with water/some solution/something possible to bring with you such that you feel safe reinserting it? Potentially, a hormonal birth control injection that stops periods before the trip would be ideal for some people. Dealing with periods varies a lot based on individual preference. I think if you had tampons without applicators (OB?) made of just cotton, you could probably dispose of them easily enough. Now I'm really curious about what people HAVE done. I used cloth pads when I was bleeding and washed them with my kid's diapers. Do people use cloth diapers in rain forest villages or do they do something along the lines of elimination communication (from birth, noticing the tells for when a child has to pee or poop and then aiming them at a designated spot for them to pee and poop in, and then as they become more aware, making sure to discourage peeing and pooping near the sleeping area, etc)?
Wow, it's great that there are adventurers/scientists like all of you that actually want to endure all of the obstacles and challenges to discover cool new stuff. Have a great trip!
As a very proud Costa Rican, it makes me super ultra proud that the Field Museum has collaborated with my country to save what is known to be around 5% of the flora and fauna of the world. What discoveries have you made in my wonderful country?
Wow good luck, have fun and be safe! You are literally all living the dream. I'm studying Bsc Ecology and Wildlife Conservation, and I want to be like you all when I grow up! Entomology, ornithology, mammalogy i can't choose!!
Have an amazing time, Emily and Tom! I cannot wait to see what new perspectives your passion and excitement bring to the trip. Fair winds and following seas; have a safe trip!
Hahaha I love that, "We are keeping this part in the video... What do women do in the field when they're on their period?" That is exactly what I was wondering too. You're awesome Emily. Have an amazing trip. So glad I discovered this channel!
This could be my favourite episode to date, can't wait to see what it's like on the expedition! Good luck and have a blast! (And please answer the period question, I've always wondered that too!)
Well...I've never been more grateful for being a strictly laboratory kind of biologist. I'm so happy there's people willing to subject themselves to the risk of amoebas and nose-ticks for the sake of science, but I'm happy admire their great work from the safety of my desk.
Reminds me of the day before going on vacation when I was a kid and you're all excited and planning everything and thinking about all the things you'll do and you're all jittery and you can sleep the night before and yah!
I'm really looking forward to seeing the local scientists and communities in your videos. Can't wait to learn about their experiences and perspectives! :)
I recommend asking your colleagues that period question of yours, Emily. After all, any trip lasting more than two weeks is more likely to overlap with a specific woman's menstruation than not.
I will be that ant eater asking you for termites! LOL!!! I hope this adventure in Peru become an important part of your life in terms of your career as a scientist. I love you Emily and hope to hear amazing and exciting things on your next video. Take care and see you soon!
Great video! I once flew across the world from LA to Australia and pretty much felt like I was still in LA. Sounds like an awesome adventure guys.Stay safe!
Emily, I love your attitude towards all the possible diseases and infections you could get. I'm sure you are going to have a great time so all I can say is come back somewhat alive?
Welcome to Perú anytime! Are you comming to Peru evey year? As a Peruvian never really thought or saw my country from your point of view, i guess all of us (peruvians) are use to that. Amazing :)
The coolest thing about all this is that there remains places to be explored. I often think of these sorts of expeditions as things that were happening at the in the 1800s, and that man had touched (or tainted) every corner of the earth. I find it very reassuring to know that there are species that are as yet unknown. I hope that the trip is a successful one!
I so wish that my school would invite you to be part of their lecture series. Specifically, I'm talking about the Texas State University Department of Geography Grosvenor (yes, the Grosvenors that founded National Geographic) Center for Geographic Education Distinguished Lecturer Series. I'm a student in the US's largest geography department. We've got people working on everything you can imagine, and I think your curiosity and your knowledge would find a welcome reception in our department.
This is undoubtedly going to be 31 flavors of awesome. Only one small part of me is sad that you can't share this trip with the man still listed as the shows Creator, Hank Green, because only he shares your same brand of ecstatic optimism indulging in discovery and learning. The two of you on a trip like this? That would be fun to watch.
Good luck and Godspeed to all of you. Have a great time in our fun, warm and wet jungles of South America. The Amazon is pretty great and I think you'll have an awesome time. Do take whatever medication you get to avoid mosquito bites, you really don't want to come down with malaria, dengue or leishmaniasis. So, no videos until the expedition is over? Or would you do an update before leaving the last Internet access area?
Dear Brain Scoop group....PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take at least 2 if not 3 pair of glasses. I'm in Jackson, WY and the number of people who have no back-up glasses who come to our "remote" area and can't function without glasses is amazing. You are going to a truly remote area. I am an optician I always have at least 3 pair glasses with me since I am DYSFUNCTIONAL without them. Emily, looking at your glasses I'm thinking you might not be far from my prescription. HAVE A BACK UP! or 2.
Glorious! Salivating at the prospects of the content that will come out of these experiences. Have a safe trip - flesh eating bacteria, penis fishes, feral jaguars, poisonous giant spiders, deadly snakes, vampire bats, volcanic diarrhoea, tropical diseases etc aside - have a safe trip.
So many cool people at the Field Museam. Bill is my favourite! Josh apparently tries to catch animals by stunning them with his looks (aside from the fact that his last name is German for "angel"). And I don't know what kind of smile-pills Corrie takes, but I want some.
I am so excited for you for this trip! I can't wait to hear about it when you get back and see what footage you get. Any chance Soon Raccoon will be making the trip as well?
I'll be going to Peru at the same time! I'll be in civilization though. Do great science Emily!
I'm here as well guys, let's get together. I'm doing an expedition in Manu National Park to Pusharo. Google it, you will be interested!
Destin!!! Who da man?... You da man!!! Have a great adventure and please bring Emily back in one piece! Already preparing for your awesome video to be posted of your trip to Peru. Take care and keep getting smart!!!
Thanks, Destin! Best wishes to you, too. Can't wait to share some crazy stories when we get back.
this is the beginning.......... I want to know the middle part ...........
Anna Goldman is such gold.
We're leaving in less than 24 hours and I'm just sitting here thinking about giant stick insects and leaf-cutter ants.
***** Well, that makes two of us. I want to see a rhinoceros beetle. I don't want to have atomic diarrhea. Sloths? Awesome. Sweat bees? No, thank you.
Pack lots of loperamide.
Much respect for people who go out and do science in those conditions.
"You'll get diarrhea, even if you don't want to!" Why would anyone WANT diarrhea!?
FOR SCIENCE !
why would anyone NOT want diarrhea? it's so awesome! hot lava coming out of your butt! it's like you're a superhero or something!
Good luck, and bon voyage! I'm looking forward to your mind blowing tales of adventure when you return.
I used to read Gerald Durrell's and David Attenborough's books about animal collection for vicarious adventure. Now I can watch the Brain Scoop.

You got so many great personalities at the field museum! Especially liked Corrie and her very cheerfulnes, she just makes one smile :D
If biology class had started with peeing to fend off warthogs and chasing bats in remote villages it probably wouldn't have been my second to least favorite subject in school. FYI to any teachers out there.

Can we just have a full video of their epic stories?! Man those were so cool.
On a purely technical aspect, a question for Tom: How do you plan to charge batteries in the jungle? Do you have to pack tons of fresh battery packs or will the expedition have a generator or some sort?
Solar chargers are a thing.
This might just be the coolest video yet.
The most vivid rich memory I have of the Peruvian Amazon was the feeling and smell of the air as the sun was setting. Enjoy! It won't all be comfortable, but it will be a life enriching experience that you will likely treasure.
I wish you the most amazing and exciting time beyond your wildest dreams!
OMG Each and every one of these people is so cool, and funny, and smart, and interesting at the same time, but Anna steals the crown. I absolutely adore her.

Everything about this video is great - the music, the editing, and the content!
As a college student currently studying ecology and evolution, but also goes through weekly "mid-life crisis" about what I want to do with my life, this really helped show me that I'm on the path I want to be on. Thanks Brain Scoop, you're awesome!
Thanks to all the interviewees. Really enjoyed hearing your answers to the questions.

Praying that you guys will have a safe, fun, and exciting time of adventure and research!!
Wow, it's great that there are adventurers/scientists like all of you that actually want to endure all of the obstacles and challenges to discover cool new stuff. Have a great trip!
I'm going to Peru for an archaeology dig in January! I'm so stoked it's unbelievable!!!!
I am beyond excited to see the rest of the videos in this series!!!!
As a very proud Costa Rican, it makes me super ultra proud that the Field Museum has collaborated with my country to save what is known to be around 5% of the flora and fauna of the world. What discoveries have you made in my wonderful country?
That was so funny... I hope you enjoyed the travel to my country to investigate and protect our planet!
Wow good luck, have fun and be safe!
You are literally all living the dream. I'm studying Bsc Ecology and Wildlife Conservation, and I want to be like you all when I grow up! Entomology, ornithology, mammalogy i can't choose!!
Have a great time! I'll never forget the two summers I spent in the field.
Have an amazing time, Emily and Tom! I cannot wait to see what new perspectives your passion and excitement bring to the trip. Fair winds and following seas; have a safe trip!
You are so inspiring! Best of luck to you, have an amazing trip, and come home safely!
as someone who actually is from costa rica, your concerns are hilarious! but i am excited to see the next few videos of your trip to peru!
Hahaha I love that, "We are keeping this part in the video... What do women do in the field when they're on their period?" That is exactly what I was wondering too. You're awesome Emily. Have an amazing trip. So glad I discovered this channel!
What a great video! I hope that you will enjoy yourself in Peru, and that you'll come home safe and sound.
Stay consistent with the malaria pills, be safe and have fun! Looking forward to the show!
and insect repellent!! It won't stop them all but it will definitely help reduce the risk!
MegaEpicLlama suplement with a steady diet of gin & tonics!
Raphtyr Does tonic still have quinine in it?
yep! always has and always will.
This could be my favourite episode to date, can't wait to see what it's like on the expedition! Good luck and have a blast! (And please answer the period question, I've always wondered that too!)
I'm so excited for Emily to be going on this expedition!
"Redefine the Edge" Love it!
This ranks way up there on the list of Best Brain Scoop Episodes Ever.
AHHHH!!! I'm so excited to see the results of your expedition!
Have fun and be safe!
This is my favorite Brain Scoop so far. So many scientists!
I can't wait to see what will come from this! Also, I would love a "It's like the Avengers, but with scientists" T-shirt.
I'm SO glad you said known *to science*. TEK deserves more recognition.
i am very excited for you, this really is a life time experience. good luck to you all!
So AWESOME. Thanks for sharing all this. Brings back memories.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the local scientists and communities in your videos. Can't wait to learn about their experiences and perspectives! :)

I will be that ant eater asking you for termites! LOL!!! I hope this adventure in Peru become an important part of your life in terms of your career as a scientist. I love you Emily and hope to hear amazing and exciting things on your next video. Take care and see you soon!
Sounds like the adventure of a life time. But please be cautious, we want you to come back safe and sound!!!
Bon voyage, good luck and SCIENCE!!!
That anteater impression was spot-on.
Great job on this video, Emily (and team). Can't wait to see more.
I hope all will be well and Emily will come back healthy and unharmed! Have fun, enjoy it, but also: be careful! We really want you back in one piece!
Why is this the first time I'm seeing your anteater impression?!? Amazing.
I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU (AND TOM)! :D
Have an amazing time, Emily!
I am so excited for you guys! Good luck!

I am so excited for this! Wishing you all safe travels :)
I REALLY want to see a post trip interview so we can compare the before and after. I think that would be really interesting.
Super hyped for the trip!
I'm having a hard time grasping how excited I am to see how this expedition goes for all involved.
"it's like the avengers but with scientists" i died
Love this video! the interviews were great! Anna Goldman is hysterical!
This is awesome!! Have fun, Emily and Tom!!

They'll be posting the videos from the Kenya expedition while they're away.
Congratulations! Really, you'll have a great experience I'm sure! I hope someday I can go into a field trip like that myself :)
More Anna! More Anna!
This is so cool! From art student to researcher in Peru!!!
Wait, "Like the Avengers but with scientists", does that mean Emily is Black Widow? I support that idea for a whole list of reasons.
Is Anna Thor?
CrimsonWizard HECK YES.
I definitely want that quote on a T-shirt.
OMG UNEXPLORED JUNGLE!!!!!!! this is the most exciting thing!!!
Good luck Emily & Co. May the Forest be with you.
I really like the interview style of this video!
Have a safe and amazing trip!
WAY TOO EXCITED FOR THIS!!!!!

great to know you have visited my country!!
This is a dream come true! Can't wait for the videos :)
Emily and Anna are like a pair of superhero crime fighters. Only their superpowers are curiosity and enthusiasm. I want to read that comic.
Please make more what the function videos. Have a great trip.
