I was a free range kid. Now I'm a free range adult. More freedom is good.

I was a free range kid, me and my friends would just ride our bikes all over my old town.

One reason it may have been safer before (or is still safer in small communities) is that there was a Neighborhood that your kids were running around in. If something bad did happen, your kids knew the adults around them and could ask for help. We want to give our kids a lot of freedom, but we’ll have to go out of our way in modern suburbia to get to know the neighbors.

I become a girl scout in the late 90's and we went out and camped for two or three days with just one adult, and we slept on the bare ground if we wanted to, and stood not even a whole foot away from the fire when we roasted marshmallows. It wasn't until maybe 2008 or '09, when i became an ambassador scout and had to teach the younger girls what to do that all these rules came into place. Having to sleep in a cabin and being on one knee at the fire... Its all pretty stupid if you ask me.

I'm 28, and frankly I find this woman to be absolutely brilliant. I think there should be freedom in being a child and very importantly, the right to freedom in some ways, in yes, parenthood. My mother used to tell me to go "play" from the moment I awoke to the moment the sun set. It was ecstasy for me and my sister to go play in the corn fields and ride our bikes and yup, meet chat with our neighbors. This is human social development 101. Watch this link below if you agree.

As a city planning (sim city like) enthusiast, it’s because of the many consecutive generations of car dependant suburbia
edit: that made the environment anti conducive to real community in pretty much every aspect

I wouldn't recommend leaving the phone at home arbitrarily... It can help a lot if you forgot your shopping list or someone stopped by your house and you weren't there, etc.

a good compromise would be to have camps or aftet school with a few adults supervising on the sidelines.

I agree with her 75% and rest 25% should have adults to develop talents.

If parents have planned their adulthood, and planned their relationship, and planned parenthood, or at least thought about it in detail, then giving their children some freedom during child development is productive and beneficial. Modern day parents may be overprotective, but at least they’re thoughtful, thought about the rash decisions kids can make. Rash decisions like signing up for World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Afghanistan and by not considering the risk didn’t make it to age 20. And a lot of those boys were farm boys that had a lot of freedom. You might want to tone down your rant, and so might a lot of social psychologists.

Very interesting.... It seems as though this women lives in a place far, far from where I do. Possibly NYC? All the kids I know walk everywhere, play unattended in big groups, and are completely safe. Then again, we harvest bananas and coconuts on a regular basis, and surf. So if you insist on reproduction, maybe move somewhere that doesnt scare the pants off of you first?
