This is our new guy Dave and it is his first time on camera so understandably he was a little nervous so go easy on him :) - Хобби
may be first time in front of camera but class is permanent. made it look easy! well done.
another great video, you wont know how many times ive got tips from you, thankfully my bungalow is all finished now, thanks again
All the little things that make a difference. Really liked the guide stick for marking hinge location on door frame, including the gap on the top of the door. Also liked pre-drilling the door frame hinge holes. Thanx for Sharing.
This is fantastic. Just what I was looking for.
+Skip Martin Glad we could help
Stuart Hughes and the other side of things

Thanks Dave, I always had problems with the door jam hinge set; simple things like the 'Stick' make all the difference. I will remember and use the next time I hang a door
Great video. Told me all the stuff I needed to know and was really helpful. Especially liked the staff for positioning the hinges and leaving a small gap at the top. Worked perfectly.
Hung our new kitchen door really easily and I'll follow these instructions again as I replace all the other doors in our house.
My additional tip: check which end is the top before you start measuring and cutting hinge rebates. I managed to hang my door upside down. Ooops :)
+Richard King Well if you have a hangover, the door will appear good:)
Richard King,
Great refresher for hanging doors!! Thanks mate!!
good
This is an ideal tutorial. Clear and to the point, well explained at every stage. I would feel confident to hang a door after seeing this.
should the hinge not be on the other side of the frame, why did they want the door opening onto the landing? great video though really enjoy learning from you
With hinges it's always "most to the post"
If that's his first vid, then well done. Unfortunately I hung my 1st door few weeks before I saw this. I used a cheap, bulky 'Performance Power' router and it worked, although I can see it would be easier using that one. Didn't use the staff and managed to prop the door up and kind-of wedge it in place to align the hinges, but next time I think I'll be following this technique. I had problems with my driver messing up the brass screws that came with the hinge (not a cheap one), so be warned!
Excellent idea using a trimmer! Thank you!
I think he's angling to pull the leaf up against the long edge of the hinge mortice?
Great video - thank you. Now if someone would please show how to adjust the hinges so that the door hangs evenly with no gaps/protrusions - on a non-prehung door...
Great video Tommy! If you want a free full psychological, physical and religious analysis of your life just read the comments below after posting a video on how to install door hinges 😂👍🏼
Nice... I've only seen people use either just a chisel for the mortise, or use a jig with their router... I love your method... just get the router close enough, then chisel off the remnants...
Yeah!
Yeah ! I like it yeah!
one of the best videos on DIY i have seen, very helpful.
Dave you are the best chippy and a decent bloke as far as i can see. I've learned a lot of tips from you, best wishes.
I've hung thousands of doors also and found it best to install the hinges on the jamb first, then set the door in place and fit it, making sure the margins around the door are even. You never know . ... . the door may not be square or the jambs plumb or the head level. It is your last chance to check. After you have had to buy a door or two to replace the ones that didn't fit right and you couldn't fix, you will take that little bit of extra time. I do use a story pole ( Staff ) yeah, .
I wish you'd do our door, the frame is a parallelogram :/
thank you for your show very clear and easy understand
Its always best to try the door into the opening and trim it to suit the never square frame then hang it .
Many critical comments here. Wanted to say thanks for the video. Excellent instructions for those of us who aren't experts, which is who the video is aimed at. To those who have 'hung doors for years', well done. Not all of us can boast your skills. :)
now I can hang a door... Yea!
Make yourself a marking gauge . Easy to put the long cut of the hinge . If you haven't got a router Just put a series of cuts with wide chisel and gently pare it out from the outside edge you have scribed with the gauge .
tip - Center punch to place those holes better for the screws.
Yeah, Yeah!!! good vid thanks. :)
really liked the video and the 'staff' tip really handy. A couple of things I do or would say is 1) when i hang a door i usually use normal screws not the provided ones until right at the end , that way if you have to take the door back off for readjustments /planing (am talking old buildings here) you don't wreck the soft final finish screws. 2) Whilst screws for the door stop could be considered superior to nails think of future workmen and the environment, its so much easier removing nailed on skirting /doorstops etc when doing renovation work and you can re use original materials. In more recent times the use of grip fill and screws means so much stuff will be wrecked with any future alterations, nailed on victorian skirting being the best example.
That's down to the clients. More preparation and time spent costs more in labour.
Not really, you could actually just take responsibility for the situation and do it properly and make integrity and pride more valuable than money and put a halt to us becoming grip fill, and land fill nation.
Alistair Milner high minded opinion regarding screws over nails for Christ sake
Great job Tommy. very well explained. i would of never tought of using a staff or as i would call it a template very good idea, which i will use myself, thank you.
Thank you so much very well explained. It's great to see someone spend there time to teach, & help other, & take time out to pass on these tips thank you.
Brilliant! Such clear instructions. Appreciate your work and explanations. Yeah?
you should fit the latch and handles before you fit the doorstops
word of the day.... "yeah"
A take it there's not many tradesman that have watched this video but a thought that was pretty rough, 1st he never offered the door into the opening to check for fitting and shape, 2nd its 6 inches from top and 8 from bottom! 3rd after he routed out hinges they weren't that tight fitting in there checks plus I dont agree with using a pencil to mark them out just use a knife its far neater, 4th when door was hung did you see the gaps! i would accept 5mm but that lock side had to be 10mm nearly
I have watched this channel for quite a few tasks. I am a fairly experienced diyer but have found these videos give good clear tips. Cheers Dave
6 inches down from top. 9 inches up from bottom.
If you use a vix bit it would center the drill bit in the holes. easy
Tommy but his names Dave 😳 great vid though 👍
Also dont drill out the mortice latch in the middlecrail as youll hit the dowels or tenons if its a good quality door.
If you're new to the trimmer like me - double check your fingers not touching the blade before you turn it on! Luckilly it only required a plaster!
Great video! Dave made it look easy and thus made it easy. First time ever hanging a door and it fit perfectly. Thanks!
great. I'm replacing doors on an existing frame, if only that was straight. nightmare.
We apprentices were taught to first 'fit' the door within the lining allowing 2mm gap all round .(not 4/6mm?) Depth of hinges (in both directions) established with 'marking gauges' to ensure correct depth from both face of door and edge of door (which dictates gap at hinge side) Door then carefully 'hung' within lining. Next fit mortice latch together with receiver and close door. If all ok THEN fit stops to face of closed door keeping stops say 1mm off face of door to allow for paint .
yeah...yeah...yeah...good job yeah!!
Ive been a chippy for 15 years and what you have said is exactly the way myself and everyone else i have worked with does it
Always hinge the door first. He mentioned why the stop was hard against the door, as no finish would be applied to the pre-finished door. He also explained his reasoning for screwing the stops in place as they provided a more secure fix if the door was to slam. Just wood fill or cap the holes with wood.
Only someone charging London prices would use a router to cut out hinges. Why not post another video to show how we really fit doors. We dont always hang them on new square frames for a start.
This is a great video but i did notice that the head of the door and the head of the door lining, the gap between them is different as it goes along. I always check if the floor is level before i put any door lining in as it will affect what gap and obviously how unlevel the head will be. Apart from that great video and keep them coming !!!
Thanks for the top tips, I like the idea of using a laminate trimmer and not sure which on to buy. Are you using a Mikita 3707 Laminate trimmer ??
If he didn't get screws supplied with the hinges he would have used drywall screws for them too i bet .
Whatever size the door is, how do i work out how to build the door frame? that included the 2mm gall all around and the gap for carpet orflooring?
thanks
I wish I had Dave's skills. Great video, by the way.
Very good video, you make it look so easy.....Can you come and fit 5 Oak Veneered door for me?
Nice one - bought one of those trim routers - made the job a lot easier/neater. Thanks for posting.
Excellent. Well explained and demonstrated. True professional.
Very Nice Video
Keep up the good work chaps. Saving me a tonne of bother.
Great video. The use of a staff will help me no end.
Dave, I could watch your videos all day mate.
The skirting video was good as well
shocking way to hang a door...........who put the lining in?? stevie wonder
And all my 'mates' use a hinge recessing jig, for the router, The jig costs oodles of cash! I used to do them by hand, but that was years ago. Don't do many these days, but I have a small router, so thanks. Nice one.
Great vid, how about handles etc....?
thanks for this video, I am about to hang 5 doors at home, amd dont want to pay someone to do it.
Make sure the centre of the spindle is 1m from the bottom of the door
Very useful technique. Thanks, it will help me! Regards
Nicely done geezer, cheers.
In Australia we have rebates on our door jams so its impossible to use a router on the jam. Good video but nice job
Fox Whisperer you put the jam on afterwards.
Re-read what Fox Whisperer said. A jamb placed post hanging is different from a rebate formed from factory into the frame. Commonly interior doors are "planted" jambs or "stops", and exterior doors are rebated jambs....as Dave says "For obvious reasons".
thanks you the video, very well done.
good job. I just wish you made pilot holes that are absolutely perpendicular to door.
Very Good instructional Video++++++Hats off
Great attention to detail. 👍
gud idea with the staff
Thanks a lot for this very helpful instruction.
Nice one Dave and TTS! Will be hanging some doors next week for the first time. Know what to do now. Can't wait for the next vid.
Can I suggest a video on jigging, routing and fitting kitchen worktops. Several on RUclips, but none with clear, well set out instructions like yours.
Great video and great presentation. Thanks!
nice job, what happened to the other door hanging video
Like the video - Dave is very clear on how to do it - Thx Dave.
Nice video - well presented, makes the job look easy! Just one question; when Dave is using his drill to put screws in, why does he not use the drill's clutch mechanism?
Fit fridge door to existing door
Great video. Great tips. Thanks
He's using that drill with the drill function for screwing screws in.
Great first video and clearly explained.
Are you not supposed to bevel the hinge side of the door before you do anything else?
No
You are great at this lesson!
Excellent video Tommy
very good.
No door knob?
nice job
Gteat job yeah.
very good
Great video for installing SLAB door and frame! Good explanation and tips.
For a Pre-Hung door installation I like to use door installation brackets that they sell in the interior door aisle of Homedepot. Think there called Quick Door Hanger bracket. You should make a video for beginners of installing Pre-Hung doors using brackets.
Loved your video on Slab Door Installations though, Great Job!
Loved it thank you Dave :-)
Really well done, thank you!
yeah
Excellent post...thanks
Yeah
Nice video, top bloke!!
YEAH!
it 8 from the top 6 from the bottom
Good video" Well done"
