Leah never ceases to amaze me. She is such a blessing to those of us who have to make repairs ourselves to save money ( broke single mom here) without investing in costly tools. Paint stirrers!!! What a great idea and free at any big home store. Thank you Leah for all the help you have provided me and countless others. You are so very appreciated.
Leah, you always give that extra piece of information the other folks leave out. I really appreciate you teaching, rather than just demonstrating how to do something.
Hi Leah. Haven’t read all of the comments because there are so many. Just a tip on shim use. You don’t use them like a wedge. Rather, you place them on either side of the space to be filled narrow edge to narrow edge. Then when you bring them together they remain parallel to the reference surface and the door, or door jamb etc. This fills the void fully. Especially critical plumbing door jambs etc. Keep up the good work.
That was awesome!!! Today I bought a new door and i will be installing in into an existing jamb. I had no clue whatsoever as to how to transfer the measurements from the hinges. Leah, you make it look so easy, you are amazing!! thank you so very much. I particularly love what you said at the end of the video."This is Leah and you can do it" I love it, you motivated me to do the job. God bless you!!!
Your methods worked perfectly. Thanks for the tips. I'm not afraid of a project, but I also don't have a lot of home repair experience. I bought a new door, realized I didn't know what I was doing because nothing would line up. I decided to youtube it. Glad I did, found your video and figured stuff out. I didn't have shims, and I couldn't find my chisel, but after watching your video I knew I could make it work. I grabbed a couple of paint stir sticks and some screw drivers and a beer. I used the screw drivers for leverage to lift the door. The paint sticks worked great. With my feet working the screwdrivers and the paint sticks limiting their height, I marked the door with a mechanical pencil. Took the door out and found my new favorite tool that's been on the bench for a few years, the Rockwell Sonicrafter. I never realized how awesome this tool was. I didn't miss the chisel at all. I flew through the door hinge fitting with it, but then I had to line up the new door handle hardware. I literally had to recreate the door jamb to fit the new hardware for this door, the metric hammer wouldn't cut it alone. I'm rambling, but your video definitely helped. I used your video for hanging the video, not to fix my new door hardware. I couldn't be happier, my door shuts perfectly, and after finally fixing my door jamb, it latches, too. For anyone interested in how I fixed the door jamb, I removed about an 18 inch section of it, and replaced it with new 1/4 inch plywood. Drywall screws to attach it to the existing good jamb and then chiseled out for the door lock hardware.
I came across your video while studying up on how to fix a door that sticks. Your easy instructions on proper tools, carving the wood for the hinge and using shims for proper placement helped me to successfully lower my front door which was sticking so badly, the door was beginning to break at the top! The sound also used to scared small children. It now opens easily and silently. Thanks for the help!!
You rock! I've done more home improvement projects than I ever thought was possible of me. I appreciate how straight forward you speak without making me feel inept. You're the best! Thank you!
Thanks Leah! I've been quoted $1000 to change door. After watching your video, I'm going for it myself. I'm changing an old door with existing jam to a new door only. I'll let you know how it works out. I feel like I can do this after seeing you do it. I got this!
I watch a lot of DIY channels and you are very good at explaining your subject matter. Also, your instruction material is presented at an appropriate paced for the viewers.
As a young woman whos a DIYer Ive made it a habit to travel to your channel when I am about to give up on a DIY project and u come through everytime. :) Thank u so much for your thorough and very well explained videos! Theyre a godsend for many of us!
Thank you Jane. I have just built a new door for my Daughters utility room because I could not find a commercially available door that I could reduce the width, without seriously weakening it. Having been frustrated by hanging doors in the past, I looked to the internet, and found your video. You have provided simple and clear instructions. Thanks again from the UK.
I have been thinking of hanging a new door for the last two weeks and thought it was too complicated, i mean how to line up the hinges properly, this made it look easy, thanks
This was amazing. What I love is you don't take for granted any of the newbie stuff that would be issues. For example, in this video you mentioned the 1/4 inch hang of the hinge coming out which most videos would have skipped over but is so important or using the shims. This is the first video of yours I've seen and look forward to seeing more of them. Much appreciated!
I do love your videos and was so glad yours came up in my search. I have a situation where I removed a door and replaced the wall wood to clean it up for my handicapped father (so he didn't have to deal with the door with his wheelchair and the jam had a lot of different drill marks so I just replaced the wood new) but now as I sell the house after he is no longer with us, I need to re hang the door but I don't have the inset or holes on the door jam. This may not be exactly the way I need to do it but it for sure gave me skills to figure it out. Thank you.
I can honestly say that this is one of a few videos I watched that gave me the guts to replace my old kitchen door with a vintage one with glass. Thank you!
You, madam, are a born teacher! Great video! Whenever I go looking for info on the next project for our house, if I see a video from this channel, I watch it first. Clear, helpful, informational. Thanks!
I love this channel. I watch it and i get it. Nobody telling me that my tools are junk because they aren't yellow and black or talking over my head. No shameless plugs to mask the host begging for free stuff. Just great information in a way that most of can follow the first time around. Don't ever change. A massive thank you on behalf of those that have stayed silent. * If you were calculus professor I probably wouldn't have needed therapy after flunking. :0)
Thank you! I bought a new door for my bathroom two years ago. My brother installed it a year ago, but the door didn't work right. I was putting off the hassle of removing and re-installing it, but no more! I just got some inspiration watching your video and will do ithe job today.
Very informative video, I'm glad I watched this because i'm not sure about anyone else but trying to hang an interior door sometimes made me want to just demo the whole house lol.
This video is another example of your amazing teaching skills. You are my favorite building instructor on You Tube and thank you so much for all of the great tips you have given me.
Just love being able to learn...thank you for your excellent teaching...that enables regular people to understand how to fix their homes. God bless you Leah.
Hi Leah, just finished watching your video... saw how you were using the chisel to mortis out for the hinge. I've hung a few doors and another way to mortis out is to run your utility knife along the long side of the hinge so the chisel doesn't split that thin part along the door. just another way of doing it, great video keep em coming!!
Wow! You are the only one who explained this properly. No assumptions of previous knowledge. I was sure I needed a router and several other things, but you totaly aced this without them, and described the rationale for each step. Click! Sub and I'm in! One question: Could you explain what you mean by "hingbound"? at 3'35" ? Sounds like something I have in my bones right now... Thanks so much.
Jane I had to fit five new doors in a recent revamp of our house..your video was invaluable especially the bit about wedging the door in place and measuring for the hinge fittings..I've now passed your tips on to three family members and obviously told them about your youtube page..
Thank you!! I was able to not only install a door, and new jambs with your easy to follow instructions. This is the second time your videos have helped me with DIY repairs.
Thank You Leah!!! Thanks to your video, I was able to install my first door in my existing jam! My wife and I just bought an older home and gutted all the doors. This is the first of three I will need to install. Got that confidence factor way up now...
I love your videos! You systematically & thoroughly explain each step giving the logic and rationale behind the process. As always your videographer captures perfect closeups that show the fine details. I've watch and rewatched a lot of your videos. They are always helpful & empowering. Thanks.
Thanks so much for posting this! I was stressing all morning about how to fix the terrible job someone did hanging my son's door. Now I'm gonna do it myself!!
Thank you so much for the video, I’m not sleeping on the couch tonight! 😉 After a negative experience yesterday, this video helped get the door hung perfectly, much appreciated!! You’ve got a subscriber in me!!!
Great video and, since I just happened to have to hang a new door on in an old casing, it was a Godsend. Having said that, I'd like to offer one observation: At approximately 3:57 in the video, you demonstrate how to measure from the back of the hinge pin, to the the edge of the door jamb, and you indicated it was approximately 1/4". In reality, since you used the front of the tape to measure, you would have to account for the thickness of the end piece...which is probably around 1/16". To put that in perspective: a 1/16" variation, over the course of 16" will create a 1" gain or loss. Multiply that times 8' (a typical wall stud) and you can see the potential problems. I know it sounds trivial, but too many people forget to allow for the thickness of saw blades, etc., and end up making some bad cuts. Obviously, if the cut is too long, you just cut more off. But, once the cut is made too short....you have to spend time, effort and -sometimes- money to fix the mistake. Thanks for the video and I look forward to learning more tricks.
You are a handywoman extraordinaire. I find you explain things the best and so easy. I need to hang a door and was struggling until I looked at this. You are the best!!
I have never been handy or wanted to be until I found your video's. Thank you, thank you, thank you for inspiring me and showing me how to get it done!! You are so patient, sweet and AWESOME !! Much love to you sister!
Awesome! thanks. Saved me a ton of money (and the agony of waiting for my husband to do it). BTW, Ryobi has a great kit for about $25 at Home Depot to router the hinges and another kit to drill the door handle. If you've got more than one door to hang, it's definitely worth it! Gonna go hang me some doors.
Finally....excellent instructions from a great person! Thank you for your step-by-step instruction and for knowing that not all of us do this on a regular basis...lol I will definitely access your videos on further projects! Thank you!!!!
Your instruction looks less scary than few other videos that I watched. They made it sounds so difficult but I think I'm ready to give this imstruction a try. Thank you!
Thank you for showing exactly how to use the chisel for each part of the cut. I've always been at a loss whether I've got it turned the right way. Your explanations are really clear!
I wish I found this video a week ago, would had saved me some real head & neck pain not to mention some lower area backside pain too!!! Great little video.
Fantastic video. Good information. I knew I forgot a step when I was hanging my door. I forgot to chisel for the hinge. I'm glad I searched and found your video. Thank you very much !
Thanks so much I looked through about a dozen videos and no one answered the questions u showed here. Every one skips the chisel parts or doesnt even mention it or goes on some long complicated thing using electric tools and stuff I never heard of lol. Thank you!
Wwhat a great video, very well narrated and so informative. I have hung several doors both interior and exterior but I like to look at videos like yours to see in I can pick up any tips to make the next one easier. I plead guilty to snatching a couple paint stir sticks on every visit to the home improvement center. :) The only thing I could offer is for first time chisel users its easy to go too deep or to shallow when "mortising" for the hinge. What I find helpful is to use my razor knife to score the hinge pocket area with slices about 1/4" apart and to the depth of the hinge plate. Then when chiseled the smaller pieces pop out and its easier to maintain the proper depth and clean up the area with the chisel. Thank you for an excellent video.
Leah, thank you so much for all of your videos. I love it how you explain everything in the most simple way for even the novice to understand. I also appreciate the fact that you use tools that most of us already have in our garage/toolbox. I hate nothing more than looking at a video thinking I can tackle a project only to realize I will need to refinance my home to purchase all the fancy tools in order to complete it 😳. Keep up the great work! I appreciate you! Now if you can only teach me how to convert my double folding door closet doors to regular doors I’d be a happy girl!!! ❤️
Leah- Whenever I have a question about a project or am unsure of how to approach something, I can be sure that you have a video to cover it. Thanks for being such a great instructor. Your videos are clear and concise and have helped me many times. -Ashley
This is great! So many of these instructional videos omit a small but crucial detail but you covered everything. The paint stirrer for spacer was brilliant.
I have three doors to hang, all odd shapes :-/ But watching your videos gives me courage hahaha. (All of the videos, working on my house for years now) I so appreciate your clarity and wee tips. Now if I could just work with your for a few months for free I'd be set !!! Thank you so much !!!!
Jane, thank you so much that is a clear and professional video and exactly what I needed to hang my new door. Excellent. I'll be back to ask about more tips.
You Rock! We are closing on a house next week and have a few interior doors that need to be replaced. My husband has been saying we need to hire a contractor. I think after watching this we can handle it.
I knew most of this already but she definitely gave some really good extra tips and we're able to show how to do this in layman's terms and not words and expressions that only seasoned handyman would understand
I left the wedges behind. I now use a small airbags. The same one lock companies use to spread the doors from the glass. So many wonderful applications.
Thank You Jane its been a while since I last sought your advice, I have used existing door to line up hinges but this time it didn't work, So now going back to removeing hardware and try your way, which by the way I know will work , you have been right on with your past advice, Thank You Cliff
Just a tip for anyone interested in making this even easier. Make sure you properly hone your chisel before starting. This can be the difference between a tough going job and an easy one, and it also significantly decreases the risk of accidents since a honed chisel will do most the work for you and you wont find yourself fighting with the wood. Honing guides can make this step fairly fool proof and although it requires a little investment of time and effort, it is worth it. And in case you weren't sure whether your chisel is honed or not, if you just bought it, I can almost guarantee it is not honed. A honed chisel will contain the primary bevel Leah identified in the video (the angled face) and a secondary bevel too which will be another much smaller angled face just off the cutting edge. A professionally honed chisel is like a razor, but for the average DIYer a little time spent with a honing guide and whetstone is enough to make a huge difference.

I've watched many videos on how to hang a door. Broadcast shows included. This one makes the most sense, and does not leave anything out. Thank you.
The best tutorial for hanging a door on RUclips!
Hi Leah. Haven’t read all of the comments because there are so many. Just a tip on shim use. You don’t use them like a wedge. Thank you for the video
Leah does it again. I search and search and her videos are still the best and simplest explanations! I love this channel
I like that she goes into detail that is left out of most DIY videos.
I've seen a lot of DIY door hanging RUclips videos but no one is more detailed and most helpful than this one. Thx for sharing 👍

Thank you so much for sharing your positive and charismatic attitude makes projects I do around the house a lot more enjoyable.
Dkwhodat Cajun You're very welcome! Thanks for your comments.
You are a handywoman extraordinaire. I find you explain things the best and so easy. I need to hang a door and was struggling until I looked at this. You are the best!!
Glad to help and good luck with your project.
I cant thank you enough for the video. I had a hell of a time with my 1st door and then found your video.
Thanks, Leah.
Went through five or six videos on this process, and yours is head and shoulders better.
This woman is AMAZING! Her.videos make me think I can build a house and I can barely hammer a nail! DIY Game changer!

Leah, Is, in a word great ! I have watched her for advice numerous times.
Omg, I wish I'd come here BEFORE I got all tangled up in trying to hang a door. Thanks for the very easy to follow instructions.
+kippersinabox you're welcome!
Thank you for all of your tutorials. Now we will see if this Grama can get er done.
Wow. Thanks! You explained the key points that all other videos have left out; how to measure the hinge plate. Thank you!

Your hands shake like mine. You have been a good carpenter for years. Keep up teaching!
did a really good job describing the method. most these videos go to fast or don't answer my dumb questions. thank you
Leah-
Whenever I have a question about a project or am unsure of how to approach something, I can be sure that you have a video to cover it.
Thanks for being such a great instructor. Your videos are clear and concise and have helped me many times.

you're welcome, Ashley, and thanks for your kind comments!
Simple and straightforward. It eliminated a lot of my confusion and angst about hanging a door. Thanks!
This is great! So many of these instructional videos omit a small but crucial detail but you covered everything. The paint stirrer for spacer was brilliant.
This was the most helpful video I've ever watched on RUclips! Thanks!!!
This was very helpful! You are such a good teacher! Thank you!
I have three doors to hang, all odd shapes :-/
But watching your videos gives me courage hahaha.
(All of the videos, working on my house for years now)
I so appreciate your clarity and wee tips.
Now if I could just work with your for a few months for free I'd be set !!!
Thank you so much !!!!
Jane, thank you so much that is a clear and professional video and exactly what I needed to hang my new door. Excellent. I'll be back to ask about more tips.
tayloredart you're very welcome! thanks for commenting.
You Rock! We are closing on a house next week and have a few interior doors that need to be replaced. My husband has been saying we need to hire a contractor. I think after watching this we can handle it.
Liz Pieroni Hi LIz, Yes, you should definitely give it a try! And congrats on your new house!
This was such a breath of fresh air diy video. Ive never done this but now im confident!
I like to watch your videos to see if I can pick up any tricks and I usually do. Keep it up.
Your the best in explaining anything with doors or otherwise
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT!!!! Very descriptive, very detailed video. Very helpful. Thank you young lady.
I knew most of this already but she definitely gave some really good extra tips and we're able to show how to do this in layman's terms and not words and expressions that only seasoned handyman would understand
Thanks for the paint stir sticks and shims on bottom. I have to line up 28 new doors in a house and that is a great idea. Nice job Leah
Jody Cybulski Hi Jody, glad the video was helpful. Thanks for commenting! :)
I left the wedges behind. I now use a small airbags. The same one lock companies use to spread the doors from the glass. So many wonderful applications.
this was amazing. you are really clear. probably the clearest instructions i've seen on any youtube video. you go girl!
Nice tip! I agree.
Your videos are so helpful. You're a great teacher. Thanks for this!
Seeing a woman do this- thank you. And you’re the only one who showed was tools we need!
Exactly what I was looking for, straight to the point on how to accomplish the job. Also you have the perfect voice for this how to type of video.
Larry, Glad the video was just what you were looking for and thank you so much for the compliment.
