Fun fact, the End of an Era Cinematic trailer was the last thing that was played in the original FF14, right when it shut down. There was a whole event when they announced that the game would be ending, where as time counted down, the red moon was getting closer and closer. And when the timer hit zero, the cutscene played and everyone was booted. And then when they brought players back for ARR, it's 5 years (in game) after that event, and they were greeted with the A New Beginning Cinematic.

    • @jamesderbutler
      @jamesderbutler 2 года назад +24

Also, players who were formerly 1.0 players got a special Tattoo for their first character to mark that they are a legacy player. They also get a legacy chocobo whistle for the reason that lorewise their chocobo from 1.0 has waited the whole 5 years for them. So you have continuity for your character as well if you're really invested in (personal) storyline and/or RP. Well, or for bragging rights if that's your thing XD

You can play the MSQ pretty much straight through, but it takes quite a long time. The story is one of the best stories of all time (probably the best FF). As for completing it, the story technically has finished it’s first major arc in December of 2021.

    • @shepherdstar14

The tale of this Star is finished. The next arc will be a new tale, and hopefully it will encourage people to play the original story all the way through, I also hope someday SE releases a solo experience that chronicles everything from A Realm Reborn to Endwalker but skips all the filler.

And as someone who grew up on FFVII, I thought nothing would ever surpass it, but my man... FFXIV is one of the best stories I ever had a pleasure to experience. I never cried so much in my life. Only things that made me cry as much are Berserk and One Piece. But when it comes to games, this game's writing is immaculate. ARR is a much weaker start but it sets up everything and it still has some awesome moments. But later expansions' pay offs are absolutely off the charts & emotion-wrecking. This game tackles some serious & real themes.

So general info people should know if interested by 14.
Yes the generic guy in the trailers is the player stand in, goes by a few names such as Meteor or Meteor survivor but most call him Derplander.
The End of an Era trailer was played in the final moments of the original 14 when they turned the servers off, they didn't just nuke the game by deleting it etc they actually IN CANON TO THE GAME WORLD set off a nuke and a realm reborn picks up 5 years later.
You never need to grind to play the story, the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ) which is always shown as a meteor quest marker, keeps you at the level you need to be to play. You can grind for additional stuff or if you wanna play alternate jobs, unlike other games you can play every job (class) on one character.
As for the quality of the story, it is by a large margin the highest highs in FF as a series, to a point where multiple FF figureheads have fallen in love with the game such as the creator of FF tactics: Matsuno, and the series father himself: Hironobu Sakaguchi.
The story within each expansion is somewhat self contained whilst also setting up multiple threads for future expansions and evolving the overarching story. From "A Realm Reborn" to the newest expansion "Endwalker" it has all been 1 major story arc called "The Hydaelyn and Zodiark Saga" which reffers to 2 opposing Gods which is all I can explain without spoilers. But basically everything so far has been 1 massive story and everything coming out now is the start of the next story.
ARR is very dated in a lot of its design for many factors, the team built it in about a year and it's inspired heavily by older MMO games like WOW, from the first expansion Heavensward and onwards the game starts to take on it's own more unique approach and identity and tightens up its storytelling and quests a lot. It lead to the community meme of you either get filtered out by ARR or live long enough to play Heavensward and become a living advertisement for it.
With recent patches there have been changes to ARR to make it more accessible to new players even letting you play through the base game solo using a system called "Duty Support System" which lets you play all the Main dungeons etc with NPC controlled characters.
There arguably has never been a better time for new players to start and there are no worries about old dungeons and bosses having ungodly queue times because us endgame players are busy in endgame, 14 incentivises us endgame players to do those old dungeons with new players by giving us extra rewards and auto fills the queues that have had people waiting the longest with its roulette and mentor systems so there are always players being funnelled into the older stuff to help the newer players. Newer players also get a sprout symbol by their name which is a universal symbol to all players to be chill and help them out, will you encounter dicks? yeah because not every person in the world is chill, but out of the many online games I've played 14 has one of the coolest and more accepting communities.
Well this is going on haha so if anyone has questions and specific queries I can answer nearly anything in the replies, I just wanted to throw my few cents in their and hopefully answer some of Dee's and anyone else's questions.

I'll post my timecoded tweet-like thoughts in another post to say this: playing Final Fantasy XIV's main story quest is absolutely something you can do as content. It is entertaining, and fun, and a really really really incredible story that just gets better the further you get into it. There's no grinding or anything like that; you gain experience by completing quests, which are given to you through the story. Essentially, a quest can be "Go to this place and talk to this person." You do that, you get experience. Usually the experience you get from completing quests given to you through the story is enough to keep you appropriately leveled through the game; it's very well balanced that way. Besides, battling monsters in the field grants nothing in terms of experience compared to quests. It would be absolutely worth it, and I could see you getting very into it, and very, very, very emotional. I'd say the only thing you'd need is a guide to tell you what content you should absolutely do; there's side content aside from the main story that can be missed but should be done (some of which I'm shocked isn't part of the main story coughcoughCoilsofBahamut).
I personally went through the game with a friend helping me along the way, which helped with queuing for dungeons and trials, but it was also good to have someone along who'd been in the game since Stormblood and has played for years before, and was also a big Final Fantasy nerd who could tell me things about the game as they happened. It's totally a game you can play on your own, but having someone along for the ride to help you along is also absolutely viable.

A few tips on the trailers:
    - "Cinematic Teaser" trailers can be skipped, you get the full one later.
    - "Launch Trailer" is story, "Cinematic Trailer" is the HQ CGI.
    - Save the patch trailers for when you play.
I joined at 2.0 on PS3, then upgraded to PS4 for 3.0 (Dante Tyndalus, Tonberry). Haven't played since 5.5, I'm waiting for 6.5 and upgrading to PS5 beforehand. Looking forward to returning and jumping over to the Aussie servers when I do.
You could play from the beginning to the end of the current MSQ without grinding or making friends (but I bet you will), and make a solid LP of it. Maybe get a setup guru to help with UI, controller mapping and the bloody online storefront.

The biggest issue is the quest slog and pacing, but the story itself still isn't bad. It DOES get better though. So much better. ARR sets your expectations and every expac after blows those expectations away. There has probably never been a better time to start playing with the updates and improvements from the latest patches. With 6.1 several parts of A Realm Reborn were trimmed and restructured to be better for new players, and dungeons up to level 50 can be run with a party of NPCs instead of players, with more to be added as the game continues. The community for the most part is very tolerant and encouraging of new players (aka sprouts). There's also crossplay between PC and Playstation, though you'll need to pay for separate licenses if you want to use the same account on both.

I'm quite excited at the prospect of you trying FF14 like you did with Kingdom Hearts, considering FF14 has usurped KH as my favourite game/series of all time. It has an incredible story, incredible enough for it to be the only MMO to ever hook me. Just a thing to keep in mind, you either quit in ARR or play long enough to become a walking advertisement. Nowadays the game is moving even closer to a proper single player experience, where you don't even need other players for dungeons. For ARR you only need players for boss battles, the next 2 expansions require players for dungeons as well as the AI companions haven't been added to them yet, and then the 2 most recent expansions have proper AI companions again. FF14 is a FF first and an MMO second. You could strip out all the MMO and you'd be left with a fulfilling game.

So the reason I have always liked FFXIV is because it feels like a Final Fantasy first, and an MMO second. It is very story heavy. And that's good because it has a good story (for an MMO). And then the unthinkable happens... the story becomes better than it has every right to be and is now worth the name of Final Fantasy. (Though it takes some time for this to happen.) The game is respectful to your time and doesn't become grindy (unless you want to grind), nor does it ask you for microtransactions. This is one of the refreshing perks of subscription games in that gameplay is not tied to grabbing more money from players. The developers can focus entirely on making a good, fun game, which has allowed Final Fantasy XIV to recieve so much support from players. That said, you have such a massive backlog. I don't know how you could possibly play FFXIV.

Keep in mind with streaming, there are wait times to get into dungeon and into the game. If you pick the right server it is quick to get in (I’m on goblin and it takes about 2 mins to get into the game even during peak time, however anytime an expansion comes out it’s horrible, a couple hours at best ( some servers are like this all the time)). And the dungeon times vary depending on your class, if you are part of a party and their classes, as well what dungeon it is.

Veteran FF14 player on Leviathan here. You can do the story only as much as you want (mained Ninja to level 90 while doing almost exclusivelly the MSQs) and, if you take your time, it can take up to 3 months to actually complete one of the expansions (excluding Endwalker that took me around a month). You can actually play the trial up to level 60 and the end of Heavensward with no time limit if you ever want to try it back.

I am so happy to see you react to all of these trailers. I've played for 6 years, and have not actually seen all the old ones.
I will say, you can 100% go about this game for the story itself. There will be interspersed moments where you have to do multiplayer dungeons and fights, but the amazing story will get you most of the experience you need to continue progressing. Lots of characters to fall in love with an lore to explore. Plus they're actually gearing the game toward people who want to play solo more and more with npc options for the newest content and they're going back to add the same functionality to the older content moving forward.
I'm sure a lot of your other questions have already been answered, so I'll spare the repeated nonsense. but I just wanted to say I love watching people react to this game's story that I've grown to love so much, and if you did a series on it I'd watch every moment!

    Regarding your question at 50:00
You can play the entire games story without any grinding or help required. The Main Story Quest gives you enough EXP and Gear for 1 Class to play through the story if that's what you want to do!
Also, with the newest Expansion called Endwalker, the story actually has an ending, wrapping up 9 years of story writing and the last 4 expansions.
Now is a great time to start playing, with the base game just having received a much needed makeover and the free trial being available again with infinite playtime including the Award Winning 'Heavensward' expansion!

To answer your question, yes, you can play casually to this game, no problem. Main Story quests give you way enough exp to play through it with your main class without having to grind. When it comes to grinding in this game, it is used to :
-Get the highest level gears, that you should only worry about if you want to fight the hardest bosses of the game
-Get some cosmetics (mounts, weapons, armors, house...) purely optionnal
-Level up other classes (you can play all classes on one character, for a total of 19 classes, but every one has a separate Xp bar)
EDIT : Also, it's not too late to begin this game, quite the opposite actually, as content of A Realm Reborn was recently re-made to make it more interesting and more accessible.

at 34:53 when you had some memory of being in that area when you played the game, the original FFXIV (1.0) Ul'Dah was one of the major cities. The world is still the same from that original game, all the lore/story carried over to A Realm Reborn, for the most part. The End of an Era trailer is what happened to Eorzea at the very end of 1.0. The servers were shut down for the last time, then that trailer played. I was not one of those original players, but I have heard a lot about it through videos and original players themselves.

    @howdomaddie 2 года назад

hey dee! boy was THIS a surprise video to see in my subscription menu today...i'm a big fan of XIV, and actually enjoy having your videos on in the background while i play! it's never too late to play (i started maybe 2 years ago?) and i hope you give it a try. you had some questions that i thought i'd give you some short answers for :D (spoiler alert: i gave you perhaps too much info overall)
    1. this story does, technically, have *an* ending. each main expansion is a somewhat contained story that's part of a larger one--the most recent expansion, endwalker, finished the main story arc that began in the 1.0 version of the game. so yes each additional expansion is "dlc" but it's more of a continuation of the existing story. there's more to come in a new major arc of the story now that endwalker has tied up so many loose ends, but there is actually a conclusion to what's come out so far!!
    2. there's not really a grind. the XIV devs have said that they want you to get what you want out of the game, and don't want to feel like you're constantly forced to play. you shouldn't need to grind anything if you decide to play a specific class and stick with it through the story. there are certainly things on the side you can grind, but the Main Story Quests (MSQ for short) should get you to max level as you go through each expansion and story. in addition, the devs have gone back through the base game of A Realm Reborn several times to trim out parts that were a bit too fetch-questy and helped revamp some of the dungeons that needed it. they've also included ways for you to enjoy most of ARR on its own by making it so you can enter dungeons with AI players--this was a very recent change from mid april!
    3. someone else has said it, but basically everything is sort of locked to story progression, and requires that you unlock it by doing certain quests. the game is usually pretty good about explaining things, but just know that doing all the side content isn't required to beat the game. there's additional 8 man and 24 man content to unlock that have their own stories, and each unique job in the game (yes, including crafting and gathering jobs!!) has its own unique story. some vary in quality, but some are also incredible--the dark knight storyline is practically universally loved, for example.
    4. if you want to just give the game a try, no real strings attached, there's a free trial. yes, it's been memed to death at this point, but the meme is true--no restrictions on playtime, and you get to play all the way through the first expansion, heavensward. and i mean *all the way through it*. each major patch after an expansion's launch continues the story so you get a lead into the next expansion, and the free trial does all of the patch content for heavensward. you can get up to level 60, and for reference the current level cap is 90.
finally, 5. A Realm Reborn does have some issues--it was made in half the time a normal MMO would be, so it definitely has its flaws. voice acting is one of them. rest assured that by the time you reach heavensward, it's been fixed.
i know there's so much to watch here, so the idea of anything else to watch is...maybe not the best. but i want to recommend two videos: jesse cox's video comparing WOW and FFXIV, and the 3 part no-clip documentary on how A Realm Reborn was created. jesse's video covers a lot in it that i think would help you get a good idea of what to expect in XIV with it being an MMO. the no-clip documentary, however, gives the square enix developers' perspective on the redo they managed to pull off. i also like playframe's 1.0 primer for their XIV playthrough, which talks about the story of the end of 1.0 in a very nice, succinct video. and for a more succinct version of jesse cox's video, a creator named Lucron did a good video on their first impressions of XIV as well (and it's delightfully hilarious!)
this is...really long, sorry. you've kind of hit just the tip of the iceberg here, dee, and i know it's probably overwhelming? but know this: you can take your time. in fact, you're kind of encouraged to take your time and enjoy what eorzea and the lands beyond have to offer. there's levelling all the jobs and enjoying their individual stories (which you can do on a single character! i have capped all of them myself and enjoy playing almost all of them), crafting things, gathering things from out in the world, hanging out at the gold saucer (yes it's here!), and helping hildibrand. there's so, so much. there's also so many loving references to the rest of the final fantasy series, too, and it's clear this game would probably be a great adventure for you to embark on. at the very least, i'm glad you've kind of dipped your toes into the water here with the trailers--i rewatch them all the time too ;)

Presently they are updating the Trust System. That is a neat little tool that allows you to do dungeons with npcs. Early versions were found in the beginning city states but Trust as it is now started to be a thing in Shadowbringers. Now they already have Trust for ARR so you can even completely avoid doing any content with another player until lvl 50. Soloing the whole thing and focusing on story only to the point where the only part making it an mmo is that a random Hulk in Bridesmaid leggins may pop up on a flying bed next to you. There is no Trust from lvl 50-70 as of now but I think they're probably working on it and there is Trust from lvl 70-90 again.
I think the reason that things like trust get developed is in part because there are quite a few people in the game who play it for the story and the story (told in the main scenario quests, short MSQ) only.
What I really like about it as well though is that it allows every player to act like a streamer and take their time exploring the dungeons without any rush to complete them when they do them the first time. The NPC-Avatars that you take with you also have additional dialogue in Trust.

I have no idea if you're going to read my comment, but holy shit speaking as someone who just started playing this year and finished the Main Story Questline just recently (NOT TYPICAL TIME TO FINISH MSQ, I blazed through it the fastest out of all my guildmates), I can say with confidence that now is a fantastic time to start playing FF14. To answer some of your questions:
-The game is cross platform, so you don't have to play on PS5 to play with your friend. In fact, if your PC's current I'd recommend playing on PC instead (better load times and graphics settings). As long as you and your friend are on the same server you'll be fine to play together. Also, I'm not sure if you can take advantage of the free trial version on PS4/5? I know it's available for certain on PC, and it's free to play up to lvl 60 and through the entire Heavensward expansion.
-This game is a single player story RPG first, and a MMO second. As long as you are playing the Main Story Questline (MSQ), and keeping up with your job/role quests, you'll have more than plenty EXP that you'll never get stopped from progressing. You can absolutely play it as content.
-Along with those, I'd recommend doing the 8 man and the 24 man raids for each expansion before continuing on to next expansion, because they have wonderful stories themselves that do connect with the larger plot, characters, and lore of the world. I'm sure your friend can give you more information about how to access those raids that avoids spoilers.
-Unlike in WoW (for reference), your starting job determines your starting zone, not your race. Also, you can switch jobs at any time after reaching level 10 in your starting job, and each job has its own story and characters associated with it. Don't be afraid to experiment with different jobs! Again, your friend can tell you more.
-Even after you finish the MSQ, there's still SO MUCH STUFF TO DO! Housing, crafting, gathering, RP, optional dungeons/raids, minigames, PVP, glamor... the list goes on and on. To quote RUclipsr Pint: "There's so many definitions of endgame."
Okay I think I covered the most important of your questions. I'm so hyped for you to start playing FF14; it really is a journey like no other and I cannot recommend it enough!

  • @zefyrisd69
    @zefyrisd69 2 года назад +1

FFXIV is very story heavy. Not only can you play it while focusing on the story, but it IS the recommended way to level up : simply going through the story + blue marker quests (blue markers unlock stuff so they're important), and ignoring any other side quests. You gain enough XP by simply doing this. Even only focusing on the story, you'll have a ton of hours to go through all of it. Even just played that way, it's longer than most RPG out there.
And no it's not too late to play this game. Quite the contrary, since they've been updating old content lately to make it closer of the quality of the current released content. So you'll have a way better experience now than at release while levelling.
Also for dungeons you don't have to worry about having enough players. Not only is there a steady flux of new players joining even now, but the game has a level scaling system that allow higher level player to play lower level dungeons by having their stats AND abilities all scaled down to what they were at the dungeon's intended level. So even if you were let's say, the only level 18 in the whole data centre currently online and queuing for your level 18 dungeons, you would still get the necessary players that queued into roulettes (roulette = you get thrown into a random dungeon that you've already unlocked, usually wherever peoples are needed, and you get benefit to queue once a day to each various roulette type, so it's heavily used).

It takes a while to get through the main story (MSQ). But it is one of the best stories in video games, definitely the best FF story (in my opinion). It’s genuinely worth it, just be prepared about how long it takes, roughly 200-300 hours at an average pace without doing side content. The story is so incredibly rich, has left me sobbing several times!

Oh and to answer your question about story: this is a mainline Final Fantasy, fullstop. The story is THE focus (all content is locked behind varying levels of main scenario progression, plus the quests for unlocking endgame raids are heavy with incredible storytelling), and I promise that by the time you're finished, you'll agree that this is one of the all-time greatest stories told in video games. They also recently updated the main story portion of A Realm Reborn so that you can do it 100% single-player, so it's perfect for a story-focused let's play!

    The short answer is yes.
The long answer needs a tad bit of gameplay context.
Yes, ff14 can be played single-player mode with the side of help from other players. however, there are a lot of blue sidequests that will add more flavour to your main story quest (msq for short) experience. That includes both 8-man raids and 24-man raids. if you ever decide to play this game, just note that as of last year, 2021, this arc of ff14 has ended on the expansion 'Endwalker'. It ties up loose ends on areas of what was established since ARR. Currently, we are going through post-patches of Endwalker where we are about to experience a new arc to ff14 as a whole.

It's also funny that you say it isn't over because while the game is still going, we literally just ended the story that began with Realm Reborn, and our next expansion will be starting a new story, so you even have an ending to look forward to. Some of the patch trailers have story trailer portions attached too since each patch adds another portion of the story to the game, but I can't remember off the top of my head which do and which don't.
