And why wouldn't Rose help fund to keep Spikemuth presentable? Because then Piers would have no reason to leave. Rose is actively trying to pressure Piers into giving up his title as Gym Leader or move to a Power Spot to allow for Dynamax battles. He's leaving them in the rundown state so that trainers will complain about the state of the town, people following the season will complain at not being able to see some of the crowd favourites being knocked out of the tourney because the Spikemuth battle isn't broadcast, etc.
I don't really have a problem with the IDEA of Spikemuth, in fact I think the idea of the town is amazing. But I feel like it could've been made bigger and still rundown.
I agree. I felt that gen 8 had a lot of issues, and was probably the most bare bones gen of them all, but it was still fun - the gym battles were extremely hype and the story was interesting conceptually even if they gave almost no believability to it. The dog legendaries were really cool, a lot of the new pokemon had a lot of character and personality like Boltund, Orbeetle, Thievul, etc....and it really captured a great British feel and had some great music.
Feels like another thing/idea is a good idea while not being done well enough by Game Freak regardless of the reason. Team Yell and Team Star feel like they weren't used properly, and I'd understand liking what they could've been more then what they are. Its actually a common issue: they'll either not commit to something enough or they do but miss. Just a random thought
The only disappointment for me was that you can't enter any houses to talk to people and I wanted to be able to walk down the ally ways the team yell gym trainers came out from
As a british person born and raised in the north east in a poorer town (that everyone says used to be booming and has been spoiled by all the rubbish the council/tories have done alongside everything being expensive so most business shutting due to high rates and low income etc.), this video has definitely made me appreciate spikemuth more. Honestly, I think even though the pokemon games reaaallly need more development time, I think they did a good job representing the UK. I have to say the stadiums being the big thing is accurate with football, but as someone who is definitely not a footy fan, I had some resistance to it lol. Also I love they had people swimming and in summer clothes in the wind and rain because honestly accurate to UK culture lol (people wearing summer clothes in cold weather, sunbathing in the slightest of sunny days - and I say this as a wearer of shorts in winter)
Spikemuth makes up for it's lack of depth with it's atmosphere. It's NOT a town, that's the point. It's rundown and lacks anything the other towns have as a result. It's more like a dungeon; granted, it could have been a much better dungeon as well, and that would have elevated it a lot. But my point that saying it fails as a town misses it's point stands
Yeah I wish the small towns in each game had a fun gimmick or something important behind it more often. Would make wanting to explore better. Example the starting towns are great like in kanto and johto where the water exists making you want to explore with surf.
What's interesting to me about Spikemuth is that it's state of impoverishment appears to reference city governments being treated as obstacles for the national government following the reign of Thatcher and her feud with the Liverpool city government lead by the left-wing group called Militant.

I used to go there just to complain that it was a line lol

Holy environmental storytelling batman.
