@AJ NYC I wouldn't say that; that's like Trump saying "I was being sarcastic" when called out. It really goes back to the court jester, the original comedian, who could tell the truth, because they did it in a humourous way. Most comedians that aren't just one liners, but story tellers, tell the truth, but in a funny way; and they get you to think, not just laugh.

dave is right, the police that use to run around my neighborhood were actually people that lived there. i remember when i was 16 yrs old and i got caught drinking at a house party, one of the officers who busted the party was a deacon at my church..haha!! instead of booking me he took me to the station and i waited there in a cell till he got off his shift and then he took me home. we had a long talk then after breakfast he dropped me off. 20yrs later at deacon Allen's funeral my dad told the story of deacon Allen arresting me and he getting a phone call that i was caught drinking and that he wouldn't charge me but to come by and pick me up, apparently it was my dads idea to leave me in there..haha!!.

agreed. we had a black police officer in our school system that actually lived and knew people all over town. especially my dad and his brothers and sisters. I always felt comfortable around him because I knew he was a good guy and would do the right thing. And to the outside force type of thing he is also right. I was racially profiled by a young office back at home a few years ago and I didnt know who he was. So obviously he didnt know me. So I found my good friend in the force and told him about it and he confirmed that was a new cat they found elsewhere. so yeah. everything dave said is 100% correct.

at the end of the day its the same old thing.. people are afraid of what they dont know.. "fear of the unknown".. its just as primitive as tribalism or violence.. imo, we need to start teaching children at school, not just in intellectual issues, but emotional issues as well. issues that address how tribalism can be harmful, or greed, or violence, or fear. a person with the intellectual tools to build a nuclear bomb, but the emotional capacity of a 5-year-old is not gonna be helpful to society or the human race..

He would stop at the Olde Trail Tavern and chat with folks, and one time he was sitting up against my car at Ha Ha Pizza and kept apologizing for it as we were leaving. Trying to invalidate the conversation of race dynamics at every turn is asinine. It wouldn’t apply here. @@Artliker1234 I agree with your point that race is present in many ( if not all) situations; dozens of laws passed in colonial America guaranteed that race would always matter. But the reason Dave didn't bring up race is not that he thinks it doesn't apply; wealth doesn't protect one from bigots; it actually triggers many bigots. He didn't bring up race because he knows that all it would take for this crowd to turn against him is for him to mention race or discrimination. He knows how fragile many seemingly strong "white" people are on the subject of race/racism. So he keeps it smiley. Most people of color learn that lesson early. Read Paul Laurence Dunbar's poem "We Wear the Mask." The comments in this thread are cases in point.

You know, I've always really enjoyed Chappelle's comedic/solo work, and it's been suggested countless times, but it never clicked with me that he's indeed one of the all-time comedy legends until I simply saw his face at a town hall meeting and still smiled and prepared myself for a punchline.

Just how he feels and deals with his town. He reminds me of how Cheer. Is treated and respected in her town they all treat her just as a town member and she acts just like a town member just like Dave in his town it's a community. He's not Dave the comedian. He is Dave the father, Dave the neighbor he's Dave the little kid that grew up in your town. AWSOME.

I love Dave so much - for many reasons. One of them is personal... My son was a true fan and even adopted a bit of his comity style. So, now that it’s been a few years since my son was killed while serving our country (USA) whenever I see or hear Dave Chappell, I think of my son, and it brings tears to my eyes.

He was articulate but not condescending, concise but thorough in his comment/question, and he had a great sense of humility. This was a regular man, not a celebrity, being active in his community (however much his status as a celebrity was still received by his audience present. There's no getting away from that, but I think they see him as a member of their community first, who happens to be incredibly famous)

Dave has a unique personality and voice that makes you listen, he doesn’t need to be funny he doesn’t need to say anything of any significance. He just instantly makes you as a listener feel like you are listening to something truly important. I respect him greatly for taking so many chances in his life and for stepping away when he felt things got out of control. It many of us would have that much self awareness to do such a thing. Thank you Dave for being who are and acknowledging this is who you are.
