Helpful Vancouver Vet dr. I just got my cat two week ago it’s 3 months old...but it’s not eating at all any food I tried everything but it’s pointless what should I do? Hopefully you help me with this.... thank you
- As a human, we are host to loads of symbiotic bacteria and parasites, both inside and outside our body. So, in a way, you _do_ own TRILLIONS of inner bacteria and heaps of little external animals, that are all dedicated to YOU, and to which you are helping to 'look after'. They are all well trained (unless we get sick and then they can run amock!), but in general, they help us stay healthy. Just be glad you cannot see them, that none of them can bark, and that you don't need a leash to walk them daily. Best. Dawg
I like how Mister Pirate hangs around... he could easily just jump off the table and go on his merry way. Instead he waits while the doctor talks to someone else (us!) and waits and waits... love how he finally goes in for a nose rub as if to tell the doctor, hey, I'm here stop talking to your imaginary friends and pay attention to me!
My 16 year old female cat loves her single human and I Love her. Lots of kitty kisses and snuggling on my lap, Every time I sit down. Watches my every move and follows me everywhere. Sleeps with me too. I'm a long haul trucker and she travels with me.
Thank you, Dr. Burstyn, for sharing your wit and wisdom on cat care; your videos on squishing and giving pills have certainly helped me with my cat Audrey. Mr. Pirate's marbled tabby pattern is beautiful-what color are his eyes? Will you consider sharing Clawdia and Mr. Pirate's adoption stories for a future video? Thank you again!
If someone around South Carolina would like a kitty, I've got plenty -- adult, semi-kitten and kitten. (See my comment above. There's a horde of them.)
Please don't ever change your format- I love the fact that you don't use music, and it's just you and the pet with your soft calming voice. It's absolutely fantastic, and I connect much more to it than other vet channels.
Watch how he's talking but also paying attention to how the cat is responding to his petting. If the cat is giving off a 'that's enough of that kind of petting' vibe, he gives it a break and changes to a gentler, different form the cat's now ready to enjoy. Lovely, and very skilled.
My recently departed kitty had kidney disease. I was lucky that she took to the prescription kibble right away. She wouldn't eat any of the canned food options unless I mixed in a good amount of the canned food she liked though. I was able to get up to about 60% Rx canned food, but no further. My vet and I thought that the moisture she got from the canned food was worth it, even with some of the regular stuff mixed in. She stayed pretty stable (activity and blood tests) for 2 full years before things fell apart. She was 18.
Jeff Ralston sorry for your loss. You did everything you could for her and 18 is a good old age. My Siamese Mixa is 14 and also has kidney failure. She's been taking Semintra for several years and earlier this year we managed to change her diet to special renal canned food (it was very hard to make her accept the change). She's had two blood tests since then and they both came out perfect! Hopefully she'll stay this way for many more years.
Thank you! Its not training per se, but rather developing a good relationship with the cats, and letting them know I can be trusted to act in a sensible manner (from their perspective). I suggest you look at "How to pick up a cat like a pro" for all my tips about how to build trust with felines!
It's just personal non-scientific anecdote, but I find that both cats and dogs -- though especially dogs -- tend to try to pay attention when you're talking in a low calm voice, like the doctor is doing in the video. I had the somewhat misfortune of having to walk a big German shepherd dog that my brother wanted when I was in the army, and after a year or so couldn't give a crap about any more. I liked the dog, mind you, but he wasn't trained in any way, and pulled like an ox. I discovered that if I talked to him the whole way, he'd pretty much walk by my leg. Mind you, I got funny looks from people hearing me telling fairy tales and whatnot to a dog, but the dog was too busy trying to figure out what I'm telling him :p With cats, reacting to what you say is VERY low priority, even when they understand it, so it's not as effective. But a gentle scratch behind the ears or under the chin, and a calm voice tends form some degree of association anyway.
NegotiatorGladiarius, I've discovered this is true with my cats. One of our Bengals is a little spit-fire, and she is more than ready to swat any of her sisters who get too close. But if I immediately start talking in a low, soothing voice as soon as one of the other cats invades her personal space, she will not swat them. This works every time. No idea why it works as it is the only time she listens to me (except when I break out the treats), but it certainly does.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet Exactly right! It's all about calmness and understanding cat behavior. A soft touch and a gentle voice goes a long way. Your connection with Pirate is very similar to how I interact with my female. She is 16 and we understand each other like an old married couple! All I need now is a Woman I can have a connection like that with... LOL !
1st of all I love your channel and your presentation!! Well I am harbouring a stray cat for 3 years now. I think it originally "belongs" (if a cat can ever belong) to a neighbour who buys all kinds of animals. I have a cat door installed so "Mango" can do whatever he wants to. Here my observations with Mango: 1. You present him with food he doesn't like too much indoors, outdoors and he will suddenly eat it. Maybe he is in competition then with the hedgehog and magpies? 2. You buy cat food with fish and he won't eat it. On the other hand he captures fish from nearby lakes and eats them (without the head). Maybe hunting is part of the flavour? Sorry for my English. Cheers, Crashpilot.
I've found when other cats are around and they have to compete for food, they will gobble up whatever you put out for them. I'm feeding stray cats outside and they never fuss about which food is put out. They simple eat it. Whereas, inside cats I've had could be finicky.
I just started using Fortiflora recently and our cat really enjoys it. I've even used it to coat pill pockets since he loves it so much. I don't even mix the powder in with his food and just dump it on top, he literally laps it up, must be so tasty.
4:21 Why is Mr. Pirate so cuddly and fluffy and cute help .. Btw were your cats always this calm or have you trained them somehow? My cats are little devils
It's probably a mix of Mr. Pirate's personality and him being an elderly cat. My young cat's more cuddly after I've played with him awhile and he uses some energy :)
Pirate is so cuddly! ;-) Just like my Suzie. Thank You for two bowls idea. Suzie is overly careful cat and very sensitive to intense scents so it's not easy to make her eat something new. Yet I do have to since we need to help her to control her wieght. So thank You very much, now we will know how to help her get through this transition from her old to new ones eating habits.
I love to watch you interact with the pets in your videos. Your love for them is so evident. I can attest to the fact that cats are weird and each have their own individual identities.
You guys are so nice. I just don’t feed them if they won’t eat. After a day they are hungry. But you are right about the tuna. Also, stroking them while they are over the bowl seems to initiate an eating reflex.
My cat doesn’t need a new diet and likes to eat anything. So I don’t need the information in this video at all. But I love to watch you interact with your cat.
He stared at the doctor's shoulder pretty intently and even made a little move toward it. 1:08 and 4:25 a true shoulder cat!I had to change The Donut's food from dry to wet. I put the cat food down and she started eating it without hesitation because she ate anything and she was a pig, RIP Donut Girl.
Lol, I know that happens. One of our cats when I was growing up was a rescue who would come call you to follow him to his dish so he could eat. I think this may be linked to cats who have been street cats and are anxious about eating, or it may be just a very social cat who wants to share his "find" of yummy food with his favorite giant dumb-cat who can't hunt for himself. Either way, I don't think this behavior is pathological, although it can be hilariously annoying at times.
"giant dumb-cat" haha well good to know I don't have to worry. I work from home so we're around each other pretty much 24/7. I guess she just wants some company at lunch. Really solid videos keep it up Doc
Eating is a time when cats are vulnerable. They are focused on eating, so they are less aware of their surroundings. Skittish cats are particularly prone to wanting their human to be near when they are in this vulnerable position. Kitty trusts you to have their back. Very social and young cats are also prone to this behavior.
When he says "Giant dumb cat" he is talking about a theory scientists have on how cats perceive us. That being cats see us as a cat also...but a very dumb one who communicates by making sounds and cant hunt correctly etc. So your cat may very much think he is helping you by teaching you how to eat etc.
I’ve had to switch my cats food several times for health reasons as well as foods being discontinued. And what’s even trickier is doing this with THREE kitties who have different texture and taste preferences. One loves dry crunchy textures and one loves soft textures the third eats anything we had to get a variety pack of cans and pouches and do nightly taste tests to see what everybody would compromise on. It was quite a project but we found something everyone would eat. Btw the helpers in your videos are always the sweetest babies ever. I wish you were our vet !! Even though ours is very nice. 🐱
Oh wow perfect timing! I just adopted a new cat who is SO incredibly picky. His previous owners only ever fed him deli turkey and he's rather overweight. I've been told to help him lose weight gradually, but he is rejecting most cat foods and only wants what's on my plate!
Thank you for your advice. It has come just in time for our elderly Maine Coon who is being particularly pernickity over a change of diet. Your advice starts at next meal time. Many thanks.
Thank you for making this videos. I feel like there isn't as much helpful information about cats as there is about dogs, especially from a knowledgeable and legit source like your channel. Excellent work.

mr pirate is looking particularly handsome today
Dr.brstyn: *kisses cat* oh, hi!
my heart: depression decreases by 10%

Mr. Pirate is so cute :)
There are nice loving people in the world. It always helps my heart to see it. :) Hang in there.
dr. brstyn is my spirit animal... vet

yes!
3:04 Mr. Pirate makes the ultimate hard choice... food or climb on daddy’s shoulder?
Why is your cat so cute... T_T
I know! Right?
Helpful Vancouver Vet dr. I just got my cat two week ago it’s 3 months old...but it’s not eating at all any food I tried everything but it’s pointless what should I do? Hopefully you help me with this.... thank you
Go to a vet immediately.
Let's get Dr. Burstyn a silver play button!
I dont even own a pet, why do i keep watching these.
Because you are a cat?
Because you are simply drawn to animals without realising it, just enjoy!
I just watch for the cats.

lmfao i love ur username
The Communist Cat 😂
Easy. You just *squish that cat*

How to get my cat to eat new food? I place it in front of him.
Getting him to _stop_ eating, that takes skill and mastery.
Aww how cute when the kitty is giving you a feline-kiss 😻 What a friendly cat and a handsome vet! I want both in my life 👌
kittens are cuter than human babies equally adorable
My 16 year old female cat loves her single human and I Love her.

Can you do a video on how to care for a cat after surgery?
The way pirate leans in for a kiss...so adorable!!
I love how the cats on his videos are always so affectionate toward him. Cats are quite intuitive, so he must be an awesome vet.
This is shoulder cat 😃🤗
I love you, Mr. Pirate
Yay , it’s Mr. Pirate!! 💗
Awww head bumps 🙀🙀🙀
Mr Pirate is so sweet, he reminds me of my 10 year old orange tabby who is just a cuddle machine! got to love when they give those headbutts!

Best vet and cat ever!

I love Clawdia too😉

Yay! Mr Pirate!
Squish that cat 😸
Thank you thank you thank you 🙏
I’m so grateful to you, I’m suffering since days, searching in the internet for hours, until I found this helpful video, thanks a lot I will try everything 👍🌷🌷🌷💕💕💕
This is perfect timing for me! My little Sumi is just getting over a case of Fatty Liver, just had the food tube taken out, and we have been worried sick about making sure she keeps eating while we try to get her and her sister back on kibble.
You can also use salmon oil spray on the new food, this is full of vitamine and omega 3 and cat's love the taste of it
Mr. Pirate is adorable! He certainly loves you. :)
I found my answer to my previous question about changing food for my cat (Gracie). Thank you.
Canadians seem to be the friendliest people on the planet 😊
I was lucky. my cat had to change to a different food to help with his dental issues, and he actually liked the new food better. I mixed it 50/50 from the start, (just because I still had quite a bit of the old food left, and the vet said it was ok for him to eat both) and he actually started picking out the pieces of new food and leaving the old food in his bowl. I guess I'm lucky, my cat has never made an issue of food.
