  • Another awesome Osborne Bros performance on the 1984 Fire On The Mountain TV show. The Nashville Songwriters Foundation has certified this classic song as the first million-selling single in country music history.

The Alternate Words to Wreck of the Old 97
Well...She was comin' 'round the corner 'bout 90 miles an hour
When the wheel on her bicycle broke
She was found in the grass with a wheel up her ass
And her kidney playin' Dixie on the spokes

@@popev3887 That is a different song, using the same melody. Whoever wrote the song about the MTA lifted the melody.

Read the story many years ago in READER'S DIGEST. SIM WEBB was the Fireman's name . He died in 1935, I believe. He often said;"only reason I'm alive Casey threw me out the cab door..........saved my life."

That was a different wreck and song. Steve Broady was the engineer on the old 97, which crashed in Danville Virginia in 1903.

Heresy it may be but it's my belief that Sonny was a more advanced banjoist than Earl. Superb technique & 'ear'.

I love the song, thought it was from Johnny Cash. So one version of him is my favorite. Who is the original from?
