  • This News item was aired on channel 7 news on the 8/4/22 and is about the retirement of the iconic XPT. One year on and we are still waiting on the replacement and the queen of the rails rolls as strong as she has done for 41 years.
    When it was launched in 1982, it revolutionised public transport. Super-fast trains connecting NSW cities with country towns. 40 years later, and the XPT fleet is being retired as memories of a history making train come flooding back.

    If I had a dollar for every time someone claimed the xpt was retiring I'd be a millionaire

      It's definitely in the process of being replaced. Contracts for new trains to replace both XPTs and Xplorers have been signed. The new trains are bi-modal, so they may have better acceleration on the electrified parts of the routes (i.e., a small fraction), but they won't be any faster than the XPTs.

    XPT= Icon.

    The XPT rarely runs at its top speed of 160km/h anyway, due to the lack of straight track, and this will be true of the new trains, which have the same top speed. However, the new trains are diesel multiple units, so the passengers will have to deal with the noise of the engines beneath the floor.

      Hi Sylvia, I agree so we probably won't see a true upgrade until they do something about the rail infrastructure. Thanks for watching

    A little searching should easily find a 7 News vid from either 2015 or 16 making an almost verbatim announcement as to the end of the XPT. Since then, crickets til 2022.....so yeah, don't hold your breath on any Bullet Trains coming any day now.....they're not.

      Yeah it's been "coming" for so long, and I've not seen anything of a high speed train. Thanks for watching

    CAF in Spain lost a lot of time with Covid lock downs and restrictions, as we did in Australia, think it put them behind just over a year in production. Need to check for cracked floors and frames when we get them! Nice to see Bernie Willingale (AFULE) in the video. At 1:45 the talking head says "with new Bullet Trains" ????? I will be dead and buried by the time High Speed Rail at a minimum 200KMh operates in this country. Need to fix up the track first before High Speed Rail...Nice one Barrie.

      Melbourne to Wagga maybe but the rest of the twisted and hilly way to Sydney? Don’t think so.

      @@jimcrawford5039 Right you are Jim, billions of dollars would need to be spent, whole new track would be the best option with electric traction.

      Thanks Dave, I had a little laugh at this one but it was definitely worth reposting. It's like when all the testing on the tilt train was taking place and we are still waiting for that one. Thanks for your insight as always.

    High speed passenger trains need long sections of straight track.....just like inland rail will have.....but i think inland rail is frieght only unfortunately

      Yes does have A/C much of the time! But works like rubbish, especially when one or two cars break down. All passengers then have to be moved too other cars. Fix the darn rails and get decent trains.
