You need to go back to your foundation.
His driving game is weak on the trouble side....work with him in low stress situations like driving over and around obstacles on that side to build his confidence on working more on that side.
Horses that go into an automatic response have been trained to disconnect from you.
You need to reconnect and pay closer attention to when he is disconnecting....try to change something before you lose him.
I have had some experience with ex race horses.
If you have the Parelli programs go back to them and review.
You'll see and learn new things every time as your experience grows and your eye develops more. I go back to my old book the original Natural Horsemanship from time to time.
The trouble shooting videos are AMAZING to.
Have you had the opportunity to work with an Instructor or attend a clinic?
      Best of luck to you!
