  • Two weeks ago we watched a day adventure with Morgan and Clay for Sky Island Adventures. June is just when bug season really starts to ramp up, each summer.
In this video we watch some of our adventures during one night of their time with us.
Among other things, we see owlflies, mantispids, large moths and grasshoppers, a grasshopper mouse or kangaroo rat, and a Sonoran toad.

Those light traps are like a mini bug zoo, everywhere you turn there is something amazing and exotic and huge! And it's all in one place!

This was just the beginning of bug season. It's gets a lot more crazy than this as the season develops!

@@bugsincyberspace I recently rehabilitated two praying mantis that I rescued during Hurricane Hilary in SD. Reason I discovered your channel. They are in great shape. It’s a shame they have such a limited life span. But hey, I just turned 70. Looking forward to obtaining some new critters from you in the future. “Sky Island Adventures” is on my bucket list.

In the United States, owlflies with the split eye are always a member of the genus Ululodes.

i wish Nevada was like this lmao, we dont have an owlflies but we do have quite afew species of antlions and lacewings, also we have that one giant lacewing, the black ones, we have tarantulas aswell but they arent as common here than over there

    • @bugsincyberspace

Wow, no owlflies. That's actually really surprising and I checked Bugguide.net for records and there were none for your state. I have to imagine they occur near the southern tip but then again, zero records!

@@bugsincyberspace i know, its very strange, but i swear to god ive seen one tho, JUST ONE! i forgot where i saw it tho, it was somewhere south from me i believe, im not sure if it was just a small antlion tho, because the way it was flying was really fast, and i would think that an owlfly flies faster right? i dont know, i tried to catch it but it was so hard to see since it was so bright outside and hot, plus i didnt have any net, but i did catch a cool velvet ant and a little robberfly

@@entomologywest I have to imagine they occur in the south there, though likely not very frequently. It's always fun to remember those "near misses" where you think you saw something, but aren't sure. And just wait until you get older. Your memories really pile up and become much more suspect. ;)
