  • A glimpse at what 9 months living at a volunteer camp on a little island called Nosy Komba in Madagascar looks and feels like. In no way can any footage do this place justice, best months of my life.

This is something I'm planning on doing this year! Amazing video. What company did you go with?

i went with international volunteer HQ, they set you up with MRCI (Madagascar Research and Conservation Institute) for their volunteer program. There is another option of going with frontier, but personally I highly recommend MRCI. Its a fantastic option to spend a long period of time in a beautiful country and help out while doing it! The people running the operation are fantastic too.

I was looking into this program and really want to go! What program did you do? Marine conservation? How many volunteers were there? Did you feel like you made a big difference on the island? Sorry for all the questions! I'm just curious!

Lily Slaughter I did the marine program then stayed on as an intern for a total of 9 months, I would now consider Nosy Komba my second home.
The marine team at the time consisted of about 10-12 people and in the whole base there was a maximum of around 40 or so. The guys running the base are some of the best people I've met.
No matter which one you choose you really do feel like you're making a difference. The marine program have recently made the area around the center a protected area and are working on informing the locals on fishing regulations.
The forest conservation program have been educating the locals on safe farming practice so as to preserve the natural environment.
The data collected from both the forest and the marine program goes to research biodiversity in the area over time.
The teachers expanded programs to go and teach english to more villages around the island which benefits the locals with free education and learning a very useful language.
At the same time the contruction team has been building essential buildings such as bathrooms and even a playground for the kids in the local villages.
If you're looking to volunteer anywhere I would highly recommend this program and I would recommend staying several months if you have the time you won't regret it.

Lily Slaughter I personally travelled through IVHQ though I hear they've added some benefits to going through MRCI you'd have to look into it though thats past my time

Hi! I'm also very interested in doing this. Could you tell me what the age range was of the people there around that time (I've been asking this question a lot). I hope it's around early-twenties and mid-twenties). I'll be 27 by that time and I hope I won't be considered to be a fossil XD.

Enjoying Life yeah you're exactly right. The range was somewhere in the 20s, though at the time I was the baby at 18yrs old and we had a 65yr old join us for a while and she did great aswell. No worry about age being a factor

Ah that's so cool; I might go with this organization because the staff and most people who uploaded these clips have been very helpful. I think it's the perfect combination between seeing something of a foreign country and hopefully contributing to helping the community. Hence my Last question: did you really feel as if you helped the local community besides the awesome experience you had on the island?
