I think the Amiga shined more as a computer. Games that used point and click, like Monkey Island etc. Or art and music applications. Things that worked to its strengths. Nowdays we see a lot of people being exposed to the games that were trying to be arcade/console style and a lot of them were terrible. A few gems for sure, but a lot those are best forgotten.

I appreciate the advice, I have looked at the library of carts slot of classics from youth. I don't mind cart collecting (you should see my Switch collection). It's in a nice neat easy digestible package. It will sit in my garage next to my mini consoles and I will flick it on and chill when I am smoking or whip it out when company comes around. I am well aware of the novalty it. I own a Shield Tv an emulating beast, with tons of games, running games on a hard drive. Meh. Even the best emulators still have some jank. But I am not of that ideology. I am from the time of, "get up and hit the reset button." But I do like to hear what people like yourself have to say on the matter.

  • @DataHombre
    @DataHombre Год назад +2

Amiga games for the most part utilized, just like the C64 before it, the single button Atari 2600 style controller. That's why the control scheme sucks for fighting games. The controller port very well had the means to do more buttons, but developers settled for the good old single fire button scheme. :(
The other thing to mention, is that most Amiga games of the era (1990+) came out in PAL territories, and likelihood of these Evercade ports playing at 25fps / PAL is very high.
Amiga was a computer, and it came with lots of amazing games. Some utilized the mouse and keyboard as well, and some stuck to the single button joystick scheme.

I did grow up with the Amiga and I also owned a SNES at the same time. I loved the Amiga more for earlier A500 games, OctaMED and Dpaint for Music and Art. The Amiga was a machine which I enjoyed a lot but unfortually it's hit and miss with many games. Beat 'em ups are probably the worse genre on the Amiga as they don't translate to a 1 button joystick very well. I agree with your thoughts on this one too.

The Amiga was not designed for arcade games like the ones in the 90's with big sprites. The games you shown like the fighting games was the Amigas attempt to compete with the SNES and Genesis but it wasnt designed for that. So no an Amiga owner would probably not have much nostalga for these games. Someting like Monkey Island point and click is a native Amiga game as well as Another World or Out of this World which was ported to the SNES. The SNES version was worse than the Amiga as they dripped the cinematic music and the graphics were a lower resolution.

The Amiga tried to be a PC and an arcade machine at the same time.
It failed miserably at arcade games, with the notable exceptions of Turrican, Silkworm, Rod Land and Giana Sisters. Turns out running games at 25 fps with only one action button ain’t ideal for arcade games :P
The home computer side was where the Amiga shone brightest though. Keyboard and mouse controls were perfect for strategy, adventure and RPGs like Dungeon Master, Monkey Island, Lemmings, Populous and Eye of the Beholder. Everything else is best left to the Mega Drive or the Famicom.

    • @markg5480

Well said. Even its platforming games like Magic Pockets and GODS, while looking lovely, were really dull and a chore to play. Then there were the real stinkers like Captain Planet. Shadow of the Beast was probably one of the most overrated games at the time.
Flashback, Prince of Persia and Another World were excellent, though... but you could get them on the SNES.
The original Super Mario Brothers on the Famicom is as playable now as it was back then, which is a testament to how great it is.
Whereas all these Amiga games will maybe hold your interest for 1 minute.

    • @jimkrom

Let me give you many more examples of arcade games that were awesome on the Amiga. It was a good arcade machine at the right hands. So off the top of my head we have: rainbow islands, bubble bobble, toki (best port of it on any system at the time), ghosts and goblins (same as toki, best on any system, miles ahead of shitty nes version), new zealand story, snow bros, pang (as arcade perfect as you could get), and these are just staight arcade ports (and I am sure I am missing a few). Then arcade like games (since you mention turrican and gianna sisters) we have swiv (again best port of the game, certainly better than both the MD and the SNES), superfrog, jim powers, leander, parasol stars, bc kid (both it and parasol stars equal to if not better than their original pce versions) and the list is long if you want me to continue... Oh and racers (just for the fun of it) there is Lotus Esprit 2 (all 3 of them actually but especially the 2nd one) that many consider the best arcade style racer of the time for home and super hang on which (at least the arcade part of it) was better than the MD version if nothing else, just for the option of having analogue controls via the mouse...

    • @Gryzor88
      @Gryzor88 Год назад +3

@@jimkrom Well, I’m happy for you, if you can tolerate 25 FPS action games just like that. After playing Ghouls’n Ghosts, R-Type and Pang on console, I got rid of my A500 immediately. Amiga Rainbow Islands has 25 FPS sprite animations with 50 FPS scrolling, which is jarring, but still sort of a decent effort for 1990. One also had to choose between either music or SFX in most Amiga games, which was just naff.

Pool and bowling may be boring to you, but not to some people. But I see what you mean about the quality in regards to the games included in these cartridges. My issue with having them in collections like these is that there will be ones that may have one or two games you really like, but you don't care about the rest, so you end up missing out on it entirely. While I wouldn't personally say the Team17 Collection is a prime example, I do find there are other more egregious examples to put it bluntly. Something I find is occurring more and more with these collections over time.

Body Blows is far from being the best Amiga fighting game, some people enjoy it, but I think Shadow Fighters, Fightin' Spirit (despite the constant disk swapping on the Amiga, is one of the best looking fighters on the system) and even Elfmania are better options (none of these are from team17, but hey ho).

  • @grzegorz__
    @grzegorz__ Год назад +2

I had Amiga as a kid / teenager. I loved it, it's awesome computer.
    BUT
People don't understand (especially in US, grown on SNES / Genesis) that Amiga is totally NOT about arcade games - it's the worst thing you can do on Amiga.
The best games, many of them you cannot find on any other platform are games ... controlled with mouse and keyboard.
    1. Awesome Point n click adventure games
    - Secret of monkey island,
    - Indiana jones and the fate of atlantis
    - Beneath a steel sky
    2. RPG games, but not jRPG, not boring japanese dungeon crawlers, not even isometric / top-down ones.
    - Ishar series - first person, with pretty graphic, mouse controlled, story driven. Open air, dungeons etc.
    3. Awesome economic games
    - Detroit - still one of the best of running your own ... car making company :)
    - Championship Manager - yep, the best Football Manager series started on Amiga. It has more than 30 years now.
    4. Strategy / City Builders etc.
    - Settlers
    - Utopia
    - Deuteros
    - Railroad Tycoon
    - Millenium
    - K240
    5. Adventure games, pretty often First person perspective or isometric, futuristic, cyberpunk
    - Dreamweb,
    - Elvira series,
    - Burntime,
    - BAT2,
    - Transarctica
    - Lost Patrol (your squad is left behind enemy lines (in Vietnam ?) and you need to go back - one of the best games when it comes to building immersion at that time to me :) ).
    - Perihelion
Do you know any of these games ? Most probably not. Maybe one or two games were ported and released on SNES / Mega-Drive
It's not a bad cart, BUT it would be probably very difficult to license all the best games controller with pad / joystick, because literally you would need to pick like the best of the best. Alien Breed is great, but other games are rather anonymous.
The games that come to my mind played well with pad / joystick on Amiga are:
    - Sensible World of Soccer
    - Chaos Engine
    - Great Giana Sisters
    - Pang
    - Panza Kick Boxing
    - Rodland
    - Ruff n Tumble
    - Silkworm
Summary - the best, classic, nostalgia games, or games that other platform could be jealous about are games ... controlled with mouse.
On Amiga you literally could play genres / mechanics non existing on consoles, while for pure arcade pad / joystick controlled games was pretty much always worse than on SNES / MegaDrive

I recently downloaded a retropie image with 11,000 games running on systems from the 1980s to the 2000s. Arcade, Sinclair, Commodore, Amstrad, Nintendo, Atari, Sega, NEC. All the more successful 8 bit, 16 bit and 32 bits Computers and Consoles.
While there are a lot of excellent games (particularly the arcades), I found a lot the games I used to play in the 80s and 90s flat. I have some nostalgia for them, but beyond that, they are limited.
Perhaps it's because in the last few years, I've got used to huge AAA games with dozens, if not hundreds of hours of storyline, with detailed (and often well written) characters. The games of the 80s and 90s, if they have a storyline at all is usually pretty much at the level of "you are an unknown character who is on a moon and needs to shoot stuff".

Games like Body Blows control the way they do, because joysticks for all the major computers at the time used just one button, so fighting games had to be built around a "context" system, where you'd hold down the button and press the stick in a direction to get different moves. This was fine for games built from the ground up for it, but when you'd port something like Mortal Kombat to the Amiga, the moves no longer worked like their arcade counterparts.

I disagree. On Amiga you have totally different games than on consoles. You have dozens of point n click, strategy, adventure, mouse and keyboard controlled games. You cannot replace it with consoles. Consoles took off arcade games, but to be fair Amiga wasnt even designed for such

A breakout/arkanoid collection on Evercade would be cool if it came with a paddle controller.

As someone who owned the Amiga, back in the day, most action/arcade styled games were generic and mediocre. They spent most of the time on the graphics, instead of focusing on gameplay. And the controls mostly sucked as well. That's why I spent most of my time on the consoles instead.
I like Alien Breed though. They should have made this a Alien Breed collection, and skip the other games.

I can say for sure the Alien Breed games are what you would most likely be getting this cart for. Qwak and the RC racing games fill out the mid range choices. The rest are nostalgia or Niche enjoyment titles. But its nice to see these old school games get a modern release.

Body Blows was the best we had on the Amiga at the time. You also have to keep in mind that we had less buttons on the Amiga joysticks.

Yup a bit similar to Zool being the amiga sonic......Body blows was the amiga street fighter and by golly i think it is safe to say it is a lot better than the official amiga sf2! a shame they did not port the cd32 version which did have 6 button support i think (never had a cd32 so not 100% sure) even so i fully agree snes/md sf2 and mk were better!

it certainly did. shadow fighter and fightin spirit both great original amiga fighters, mk1 and mk2 are great ports (only 2 buttons doh) and the super sf2 turbo port, despite the horrible gfx, is arcade perfect gameplay-wise (even supports 6 buttons).

This video review is exactly why i’m hesitant to grab an Evercade. Many of the titles on these collections just aren’t worth the money. I’m jody not seeing much i want to play. No offense to the fans, of course. Great video, thanks for posting it.

When i first saw project x the sound and graphics blew me away., sadly the games just too hard to be fun. The alien breed games were the same. In their day they were amazing. I have them on an emulator now but never play them. I do however still play lots of amiga games. When I had my amiga any game by team 17 was guaranteed to be quality, as where psygosis (not sure of spelling).

The evercade is such an awesome idea, I'm just not a fan of the games, I have no nostalgia for any of them, never heard of any of them before. Could you imagine if somebody did the evercade idea with genesis or NES games? That'd be fuckin epic.
