You cannot deny great music. Period. It don't matter your background, class, race, religion, culture whatever - when great music is made it crosses all barriers. And great rock and roll like this lives forever.
Holla - you've been around a while you know how the game is - a new album gets released, there a couple of great songs (*bangers) and a few others are a'ight, and then there three or four that you can just as well skip.
So you understand the following: This was Boston's debut album - no one had heard of them before - and EVERY SINGLE SONG made the radio. Every song!!! No cap. There is not a bad song on this album or their second album for that matter. This is when music was made by musicians who had to know how to make love to their instruments, tune it well, harmonize, keep time all these things that are now done with computers and digital music. Singers had to sing - there was no auto-tune.
Then - to find out - this debut album was recorded and mixed in some dudes basement with homemade equipment - not an official recording studio.
The first album is among the top 25 best selling albums of ALL TIME.
More Than a Feeling (the opening track on the album) is an anthem that universally is beloved by any person who ever loved music. I recommend you check out that one next. Then seriously listen to the rest of the album.

The guitarist/keyboardist, Tom Scholz, invented and built many of his own effects pedals for this album and beyond. He has a Masters degree in mechanical engineering from MIT, so, he's a very bright man. Most of this debut album was recorded in his home basement. You need to check out pretty much their entire debut album.

    • @mr.knowitall6440

I believe the guitar tracks were recorded in his basement, and the other tracks were recorded in a studio.
But the entire production (mixing of tracks and etc.) was done by Tom in his basement (of an apartment). He wasn't entrusting his masterpiece to the corporate dickheads.
      The guy's a genius, and a prodigy.

Keep in mind that this album was released 45 years ago! It was groundbreaking! All of the electronic (as opposed to analog) guitar effects that we have today, started with this album. Tom supposedly built his effects boxes himself, and the sound was like nothing before it.

As an 80's baby this almost the only album my mom ever played. She eventually got bachman Turner overdrive as well. But Saturdays when she cleaned my mom would put this album on and crank it to 11

    • @Frostrazor
      @Frostrazor 3 года назад

I remember Saturday cleaning - mom put on "boogie" music as she called it. It wasn't rock and roll for her but was upbeat. My dad on the other hand worked on weekends in the garage fixing engines for side-money and he blasted the rock tunes out there. I used to sneak away from cleaning to go hang out in the garage so I can listen to the rock and roll. And Boston was a mainstay on that radio for sure! Music like this is so nostalgic for me for this reason and reminds me of my childhood hanging out with my dad. I miss those days, and i miss my dad every time I hear a legendary classic like this one.

Cool Fact: The reason there is a flying saucer as the cover is because the founder, Tom Scholz, imagined the entire city of Boston being transported to new worlds in a giant spaceship. According to him, Every single album shows said saucer because its them making a trip to different places.
First Album: 1976 (Boston) - Two long lines of guitar-shaped starships flee a planet that is breaking apart. The ships all have blue flames coming out of the bottom.
Second Album: 1978 (Don't Look Back) - The Boston ship is flying low or perhaps hovering over a grassy, crystalline planet. The ship has searchlights on.
Third Album: 1986 (Third Stage) - The Boston ship is headed towards a large flat spaceship resembling a bank of pipe organ pipes over a blue planet.
Fourth Album: 1994 (Walk On) - The Boston ship is shown crashing through a rock outcropping
Fifth Album: 2002 (Corporate America) - The Boston ship is flying towards Earth and the United States.
Sixth Album: 2013 (Life, Love & Hope) - The Boston ship is flying in space, near a nebula.

One of my top 5 favorite albums.
Greatest debut album of ALL time.
Tom Scholtz (an MIT student) wrote & played all the parts in his basement. Tom was nervous about his guitar playing but he killed it. He hired Brad to brilliantly sing. You MUST do the album in order. "More Than A Feeling" then "Peace of Mind".

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 9 месяцев назад

@jennhurl Tom did not write all the songs on this record nor did he play all of the instrument tracks either. Tom does not play a single drum track on this record and the record is far better for this fact. This has been clearly documented in the liner notes of every copy of this record/CD that has ever been sold. Barry is playing the majority of the electric guitar parts on Foreplay and Long Time, and Fran is playing bass on Foreplay. Brad co-wrote Smokin and Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home. Let Me Take You Home was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA and the band as pictured on the back of the record played the tracks for that song.
Tom did not hire Brad. This is so disrespectful towards Brad. Brad had been singing on Toms demo tapes and playing in bands with Tom since 1970. Brads voice was on the demo that was heard by Epic and producer John Boylan and Brads voice was a key part of the Boston sound, and that is why Brad and Tom were both signed by Epic. This idea that Brad was just brought in to sign on this record is so false and so demeaning of Brad. In the post litigation liner notes of the 2006 Scholz remaster of the debut Boston record, Tom finally gave credit to Brad and to Jim Masdea for all of the arrangement work that they did on the songs on this record . Brad was just not some hired gun. Brads voice will always be Boston.

📌 The lead singer, Brad Delp, committed suicide in 2008. He was extremely upset because a couple of his band members were suing one another. He refused to take sides. Anyway, after his death, those two band members who had their lawsuits upfront were sternly corrected by the judge. The judge said, “Shame on you two. Haven’t you caused enough damage?” The lawsuits were dismissed. I loved Boston. I think I was the only one in my small Texas town who recognized their type of music. R.I.P., Brad Delp.🎸

Where has the this music been? Its been there. You just had to find it. Too many young people get stuck in the new music and don't explore the old (the good) stuff. All you reactors get to discover it though.

This isn't the band Boston, this is Tom Scholz. Well, everything except Brad Delp on lead vocals. Everything else is Tom Scholz, every-thing. That mad genius MIT played everything, sang, wrote, recorded, droned, all guitars, keyboards, ALL-OF-IT, andvhevdid within basement of his house. He holds over 20 patents in digital and analogue sound and guitar devices.
The sound you heard had never been heard when this was released, but today many of his devices are in recording studios. You've heard him since then in a thousand songs and hundreds of artists.
He should be in the Hall of Fame, but he won't be. He kept the fact it was just him a secret for awhile and sold the music as a band. So they probably never will recognize him under the band.

@stacypollock9289 That is false. Tom does not play a single drum track on this record and this fact has been documented in the liner notes of every copy of this record/CD that has ever been sold. Tom also did not write all the songs. Tom also does not play all of the non drum instrument tracks on this record either.
@stacypollock9289 said, " but today many of his devices are in recording studios. You've heard him since then in a thousand songs and hundreds of artists"
What specific devices are you referring to?

Oakland, live in 85’ Big City Nights or No one like you, Holiday - Coast to Coast- please check them out. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😎the middle of the song, when it sounds different ( the bridge) in rock music a lot of bridges are where you find solos. Fun fact for you. Scorpions 🦂🤘😎

Those barbecues you went to must have been pretty lame. This was one of the best bands of the late-‘70’s! Their debut album was THE biggest debut album of all time for many years. Listen to the whole album, man. You won’t believe your ears!

Written by one man who played every instrument except drums and recorded all the songs on this album in his basement while holding down a day job. Don't you just hate overachievers like that? : )

As a child from the 90's you couldn't possibly understand what this meant for the children from the 50's and 60's. No offense to you, but you can't. This is just before the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era and the death of Disco. A very great time for rock. Just sayin.....
