Turning the machine off and then holding shot and lupo buttons at the same time did the automated descaling as in your video. For those who ask about the need to descale when using bottled water. Bottled water is not distilled water, it still contains ions that will eventually clog the machine, even though it takes longer

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  5 лет назад

      Hi ML, Thanks for adding that. I'll mention a few more things... Not a good idea to use distilled water in espresso machines. Lacking minerals distilled water or pure reverse osmosis water will over-extract coffee resulting in bitter flavors. Also, distilled and RO water can cause corrosion of metal components. That's why you never see those water types stored or transported in metal containers or pipes. Not all bottled waters are the same. There are some which are unlikely to cause scale but others like mineral or spring waters which have high mineral content.

    Thanks for this video, it's clear and well made. Question: Is it normal to have to descale every month? That's roughly how often the light comes on. We filter our water and brew 6-10 cups a day. Just wondering since I've seen 2-3 months given as advice more often. Doing the descaling that often is not a problem for me, just curious if it means the machine will wear more quickly. Would you recommend using store-bought filtered water?

    this is confusing. some of your other videos DO NOT distinguish and say we can use either decalicifiers. So what exactly do we have? Older pre automatic descaling option and newer ones? Which ones have an aluminum boiler and which ones have stainless steel or brass?? I need to know because on the other video your experts are adamant about using Durgol Swiss Decalcifier for aluminum and dezcal for stainless steel?? I want to know what I have--and purchase the correct decalcifier and you need to put one version on your videos. Because in this video you do not distinguish at all and led me to believe I can use any of the assortments in your pictured video.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 лет назад

      Hi Lisa, Descalers can be confusing! Gaggia Breras have a stainless steel lined boiler. You can use any of the descalers shown in the video. As you mention, Durgol Special Swiss is a better choice for aluminum boilers. But even for those any of the descalers can be used but you should limit aluminum boilers to no more than 20 minutes of contact with a descaler containing citric acid as the active ingredient according to Urnex. In older videos the Durgol may have been recommended out of an abundance of caution.

    What is your definition of 'normal use'? Also, what is low use? and how often should it be descaled then?

    • @ravi2396
      @ravi2396 5 лет назад +1

      Normal use is a family of 4or 5 drinking 5 cups a day . Low will be just wife and husband, 2 to 3 cups a day . How often ? The machine is smart and uses its fuzzy logic to turn on the descale light. So for heavy use the light comes on more frequently . For low and normal use around 3 to 4 months . However after 3 months of use if the light doesn't come on wait 10 days and still the light is not on, do a descale any way . Marc did not answer your question because he did not want to go on record by defining "normal " "low" and heavy . As a seller of coffee machines he is liable to stand behind what he quoted, because Marc also does after sales machine repair service . Several variables such as water quality and carefully following maintenance procedures and machine use methods prevent one from putting a value/number to " Normal/Low/& Heavy use . Hundreds of customers follow his channel to get answers after they purchase a Gaggia brand coffee machine . So each have to figure out what their " normal/low/and heavy use numbers are. Your question was just a common sense question and therefore I answered it using my common sense. It may not necessarily work for everyone. Remember the "variables" !

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 лет назад

      Hi MP, Thanks for the questions. Remove the water filter when descaling! You would generally replace the water filter with a new one each time the machine is descaled.

  • @ravi2396
    @ravi2396 4 года назад

    Hi Marc,
    I remember seeing a video that said that the Brera machine uses some sort of logic and usage patterns to determine when the machine needs a descaling. My question is what if I use just water without the descaling solution and complete an entire descaling cycle and clear the descale light Etc. Next question is what will the machine do? Under such circumstances, where you just mimic the descaling process using only water and no descaling solution. Will the machine notice/catch what we did and ask for another descaling process when it notices that the boiler still has built up scales. Thanks Marc for all your videos and thanks also to the other gentleman who does the demo while you do the shooting of the video. I forgot what his name is,

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  4 года назад

      Hi RD, Thanks for the comments and question. The other gentleman is Todd.
      You can clear the descale warning by going through the descaling procedure without using descaling solution. The machine will not know the difference. The descale alert is triggerd by the machine counting brew cycles. There's no actual sensing of internal scale deposit levels. Question is why would you not use descaler?
      Marc

    • @ravi2396
      @ravi2396 4 года назад

      Hi Marc and Todd,
      I was not going to dupe the machine but my plan to do a test run using no descaler and get some hands on experience before I do my first descaling. My machine is 3 months old and I am learning everything I need to by watching your videos and videos made by the manufacturer office in London. Like I said my very first test run will be a dummy one and when I do everything right the next one will be with the descaler solution. Also I wanted every one out there to know what exactly would happen if they fake or cringe on the process by using less descaler solution or not use at all. You answered the question by confirming that the machine has no fuzzy logic to determine when to descale other than keeping track of number of shots made Etc . How ever the manufacturer mentions it and you plus Todd mentioned it that the machine has a self learning feature that automatically adjusts the shots made based on some sort of fuzzy logic. I now stand corrected that the self learning feature is only restricted to the quality of coffee made and nothing else. I asked you this question on behalf of all subscribers to let them know that they need to follow the proper procedure as mentioned by your videos to keep their machines in top condition. Thanks for your instant reply, highly appreciate it.

    I am using brita filter with my gaggia brera coffee machine but the descaling icon appears every 2 months, just like before, there's no difference whatsoever. Could you please advise what I should do - descale it every 2 months despite using brita filter or not? Does the coffee machine actually sense scale level or it only counts the number of brewed coffees to establish time for descalling?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  7 лет назад

      Hi M, Thanks for the question. So a couple things... The descale alert comes on based on the number of brew cycles. Regardless of the water being used the descale alert will always come on after a certain number of cups. Machines do not sense the scale. For the most part, Brita and similar filters only remove sediment through mechanical filtration and chlorine and other chemicals via carbon filtration. Scale is caused by minerals (mostly calcium) in water. Brita filters have little if any effect on minerals. I would definitely continue to descale the machine. If you use an in-tank filter designed for the machine you will get all the benefits of Brita type filtration plus water softening which replaces much of the calcium with salt (salt stays within healthy levels) to prevent scaling. It's still recommended to descale when using in-tank filter but you can descale less frequently. Here's the in-tank filter for the Brera: www.wholelattelove.com/mavea-intenza-water-filter-for-gaggia-and-saeco

    • @miragee6088
      @miragee6088 7 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the response. I am using exactly the filter which is shown under the link you have provided- in-tank one, hence my question. The purpose of my question was to establish what that "less frequently" is. Without the filter it should be more frequent than every 2 months for me, but with the filter can I double or triple that time? BTW: my intenza+ filter looks exactly the same but on the box there's 'brita' not 'mavea' shown, the rest of the box looks exactly the same.

    • @Subparanon

      I use a reverse osmosis filter with 5 stages. It isn't going off of water hardness, but instead it goes off of liters dispensed. If you want to know how long it can really go then purchase a 10 dollar water impurity tester from amazon. It's a little digital meter. You dip it in water and it will tell you PPM of dissolved solids and purity. Compare your brita to tap water. If it's 4 times lower, you can go 4 times longer between descaling. However, a carbon filter will not remove dissolved minerals as it's a physical medium, and the minerals are in solution (nothing to filter, it's all liquid) . Reverse osmosis does remove minerals but it's requires installed systems due to size and complexity. About 300 on amazon and fits under the sink. Took an afternoon to install.

    Hello! I'm also having the same issue as a user below: model from 2015 and no matter how long I've held both buttons, the machine will not enter descale mode. The dial is on the dot. I've turned the machine on, off, unplugged, everything. Held for 3, 5, 10, 20 seconds and nothing! Please help!

      Hi AC, I would call our tech support at 888-411-5282. They can verify your machine has the automatic descaling cycle and walk you through the process.

    Why the HELL did Gaggia not put the right manuals into the newer models? Seriously bad quality control.

      +Nicholas Burmeister Hi Nicholas, From your comment assuming you purchased a Brera and it had a manual for another machine? Very odd!!! Did you purchase the machine from Whole Latte Love? Here is a link to Gaggia manuals: www.gaggia-usa.com/machines/support-library/nav/14

    • @Nicholas_Burmeister
      @Nicholas_Burmeister 8 лет назад +2

      +Whole Latte Love Nope, it came with the machine, in the box, which I can only assumed was packed by the company itself. It was the right instruction manual for the model, but as you mention, the system changed after 2013. They never bothered to change the manual itself. Its fine now, thanks to this video, but I had to go through the process twice, two hours of futzing about, to clear the descaling alert indicator on the machine, once manually 'old school', and once with the automated process you describe.

      +Whole Latte Love I had the exact same issue, machine purchased from Whole Latte Love. Went through the manual way of descaling. It wasn't until I couldn't clear the descaling symbol that I realized there must be a different way. As Nicholas said, this doesn't seem to be on you, but maybe you can contact your supplier to help fix this

    que pasa si realizas el proceso mal? intenté hacerlo sin apagar la maquina antes y preparó varios cafés con este líquido descalcificante, despúes hice el proceso correctamente, puede afectar esto a mi café? cómo puedo arreglarlo

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  7 месяцев назад

      Pues yo no bebería el café hecho con el líquido descalcificante! No debe haber ningún problema. En el proceso de descalcificación normal, la solución descalcificadora pasa por los componentes de la máquina que preparan el café. La máquina simplemente se detiene más en ciertos puntos para dejar que el descalcificador haga su trabajo.
      translated ?: What happens if you do the process wrong? I tried to do it without turning off the machine first and it prepared several coffees with this descaling liquid, then I did the process correctly, can this affect my coffee? How can i fix it
      Well I would not drink the coffee made with the descaling liquid! There should be no problem. In the normal descaling process the descaling solution runs through the machine components which brew the coffee. Machine just pauses more at certain points to let the descaler do its thing.

      Hi Ed, Hold the buttons until the triangle symbol flashes in the display as shown at 2:00 in the video.

    Is there a video for descaling a 2010 machine?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 года назад

      Hi RD, We do not have a video for descaling Breras made prior to 2015. But happy to hear your still using yours a decade later! For machines of that age follow the descale instructions in the manual. If you do not have the manual here's a link: xwiki.wholelattelove.com/images/a/ad/BRERA_Machine_Manual.pdf
      Descaling instructions in English begin on page 37

    It seems the descale light comes on every six months. I’m using only filtered water. So I ignore the light and descale less often than the machine suggests. Ok?

      @@Wholelattelovepage I have a big under sink charcoal cartridge filter. I end up descaling once a year, I often wait several months after the descale light comes on to go through the process. I've had the machine for 5 years, no problems. I also clean and re-lube the brew unit regularly.

    Hello guys, i did the manual descaling process (the one in the manual), my machine was made in 2017. At the end of the process i'm supposed to press the "Bean/Pre-ground" button (bottom right) for 6 seconds so the machine re-starts and the descaling warning dissapears, however my machine does nothing. I see no way to turn off the descaling warning. Have you ever had this problem?
    I used Saeco's descaling solution. I hope you guys can give me a hint! Thank you!.

    • @JustADeadName
      @JustADeadName 6 лет назад

      I guess if i can't find a way to turn the warning sign off manually, i can always do the whole automatic descaling with water only so the warning turns off.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 лет назад

      Saeco's descaling solution is fine. Sounds like you may need to run the automatic descaling process to get the warning light off as you thought.

    Throw away the paper instructions or you"ll waste a bottle of this expensive solution.

    I’ve had my machine for over a year and I really do enjoy it but the D scaling process is for the birds I only use bottled water

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  5 лет назад

      Hi T, Do be careful. There are some types of bottled water which can cause scale. The opposite of scale is corrosion which can be caused by pure distilled or reverse osmosis water. Ultra pure water will over-extract coffee as well.

      1 year is no time (we use filtered water). After one and a half years our machine needed sending back to be fixed. Solution is to descale/ deep clean regularly, as advised in this video.
